브라이트 트레저 아트 프로젝트의 기획으로 진행되는 인터내셔널 작가들의 그룹전, '존재의 코드'전이 베이징 798 다산쯔 예술 지구 중심에 위치한 WITHSPACE 갤러리에서 열린다. 이번 전시는 런던을 기반으로 활동하는 세 명의 젊은 작가, 한국 출신 강임윤과 스페인 출신 고르카 모하메드,영국 리즈 출신의 질 메이슨으로 구성된 3인 그룹전이다. 이 전시는 전통적인 회화 작가의 길을 걷고 있는 세 명의 젊은 작가들이 세상의 본질과 어떻게 소통하고 있는가 하는 질문에서 출발한다. 즉, '젊은 화가의 눈'을 통해 본 삶의 환경과 사물의 존재에 관한 본질적 이해와 성찰이 주된 화두이며, 이를 화폭에 어떻게 재현하여 각각의 존재감을 드러내고 있는가를 살피는데 그 초점이 맞추어져 있다. ● 실존한다는 것, 시간성을 매개로 하여 생성과 변이와 소멸이라는 우주적 원리에 기반하여, 세 작가는 과감하게도 화가가 관찰하는 존재의 본질과 의미에 관해 질문하는 동시에, 현대 미술에서의 화가의 존재성을 다시 한번 환기시킨다.

이번 전시에서 강임윤은 '신화'를 주된 테마로 삼고 있는데. 동굴과 마늘, 곰과 여인 등 작품 속 신화는 한국적 시원에 관한 고찰과 생성의 의미에 기반한 것이다. 작가에게 있어 신화적 메타포는 역사와 민족이라는 거대 담론만이 아니라, 근원적으로는 인간이라는 존재에 관해 그 기원을 묻는 작업이다. 이 속에서 작가는 하나의 생명이 또 다른 생명으로 이어지는 과정, 즉 변이가 아닌 생성과 확장을 통해 하나의 존재가 '되어지는' 과정을 과감히 드러내고 있다. 실재하는 하나의 존재가 되어간다는 단순한 생성의 원리를 통해 존재가 가진 시간의 깊이와 힘을 드러내는 것 또한 매우 주목할 만한 작업의 일면이기도 하다.

고르카 모하메드에게 있어 존재가 '되어감'의 문제는 역동적인 과정으로 비춰진다. 작가에게 존재의 시원은 생명과 무생명의 구분을 떠난 물성의 실존, 그 자체에서 비롯된다. 그리고 존재가 되어가는 시간적, 공간적 과정에서의 변이적 접근은 스페인 전통 화풍의 바탕 아래 이어지고 있다. 무생물이 생명체로 전환되는가 하면, 하나의 생명체가 또 다른 생명체로 변종되는 과정을 보여줌으로써, 존재의 영역을 매우 넓은 범위에서 다루고 있다. 작가에게 존재가 '되어간다'는 것은 그가 다변화된 현대 미술계에서 고민해온 '화가'가 되어가는 과정에 관한 이해이기도 하다. 그에게 있어서 존재의 의미는 '화가' 로서 또는 '예술의 창조자'로서 생명의 영역을 넘나드는 우주적 실존과 전이 과정에 관한 탐색이다.

질 메이슨은 10월부터 러시아 세인트 페테부르그의 국립미술관에서 열리는 영국작가 그룹전 'New Speak'에서 전시하는 '돌아간 풍경화' 또는 '수직 풍경화' 시리즈를 이번 베이징 전시를 통해서도 선보이고 있다. 그녀가 관찰하는 환경과 그녀의 무의식, 개인적 경험과 순간의 감정 그리고 경험에서 얻은 교훈 등이 전혀 새로운 구성체로 변환되면서 인식의 전환점을 유도한다. ● 무수한 이론과 경향이 난무하는 현대 미술에서 그녀는 그녀가 만들어낸 하나의 작품이 많은 의미를 내포하기 이전, 하나의 이미지로서의 단순한 존재감을 말하고자 한다. 돌아간 듯 보이는 화폭과 수수께끼 같은 제목은 '그림'이라는 존재가 갖출 수 있는 지극히 단순한 이미지로서의 기능을 마치 사랑하는 애완견과 같은 느낌으로 보이게 만드는 물질적 순수함을 지니고 있다. 그녀의 그림이 애완동물이라면, 그림의 제목은 그 애완동물이 불리어지는 하나의 이름이 될 수 있는 관계에 놓여진 셈이다. 그녀가 추구하는 '미술' 에의, 이 극단적인 순수함은 포스트 모더니즘 이후, 우리에게 매우 익숙해진, 계획되고 운영되는 미술세계에 대한 하나의 반론 제기이기도 하다. ● 화폭에 담긴 존재에 관한 해석 그리고 수많은 미디어가 영향을 끼치는 오늘날 미술계에 어쩌면 현대 화가로서의 존재감은 한마디로 단순하게 풀어낼 수 없는 미지의 담론인지도 모른다. 이러한 상황에서 존재가 되어가는 과정에 관해 과감히 탐색의 창을 열어 제치는 이들 젊은 작가들의 시도는 다양한 인식의 교차점을 보여줌과 동시에 회화 작가로서 그들의 정체성을 되묻는 의미 있는 작업이라 할 것이다. ● 이번 전시에서 각 작가들이 '해독'한 존재의 코드 또는 수수께끼는 우리 삶의 무한과 유한성에 대한 이야기이면서도 '그림(painting)'이 지닌 순수한 생명성에 관한 갈구이기도 하다. ■ 노희진

Bright Treasure Art Projects (BTAP) is delighted to announce a group exhibition of 'young international artists'. Bringing them from London to one of the most promising art galleries in the centre of the famous 798 Dansanzi Art District in Beijing, China. ● This group exhibition is all about three artists' views and interpretation of the world they exist in. Their close observation of their surroundings and the passing of time is individually and uniquely interpreted on their canvases. Our existence and the fundamental workings of the universe that are intermediated through 'creation' and 'transformation' in their works. ● Eemyun Kang's main themes are rooted in Korean mythology. To Kang, mythological metaphors are not only a way to lead macro discourse on historical traditions and individuals but also a way of discovering the origins of humanity. In this body of recent works, she experiments with the possibility of transforming living creatures and landscapes derived from her previous mythological themes. ● For Gorka Mohamed, his paintings are deconstructions of messages hidden in the world around him. His works whimsically combine his self-awareness as a contemporary artist with many of the traditions of Spanish Old Masters. His distinctive visual interpretation of his journey through the world lead us to the greater understanding of the contemporary art world where real 'masters' no longer exist and other genres supersede their positions as 'art'. His own position in the politicized struggle of contemporary art is an underling theme which is not immediately obvious in his work, but is constantly revisited in different layers. ● Jill Mason's rotated landscapes at first sight are secrets waiting to be unlocked by the viewer. Her signature vertical landscape and cryptic titles suggest fresh views of emotionally translating the world. More works on the same theme will be presented at the British Art exhibition "New Speak" organized by the Saatchi collection at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Mason's hope for her work is that it will remain as pure paintings in physical existence before imposed theories, references and academic jargon. Her titles are often used as means to evoke a particular emotional interpretation upon highly interpreted images. This breathtaking simplicity is a wonderful way to escape from the overly self-conscious contemporary art world today. ● In this show, discerning connoisseurs can enjoy the unique experience of understanding the way the artists perceive the world around them. 'Code of Being' or 'riddles' in these paintings reveal a secret of life that we have not yet seen. ■ HEE JIN NO
