SCOTOMA

작업에서 보여지는 일련의 풍경들은 정상적인 기호체계로서가 아닌, 혼란스럽거나 순간적으로 정지되어버린 지각상태와 관련된 것이다. 나는 이 같은 상황에 접근하기 위하여 일련의 시각적 변형과 조작을 시도하는데, 이는 사진기법과 효과를 회화적 수단으로 전용함으로써 비롯된다. 낯익은 풍경을 사진으로 찍고, 그것을 네가티브 방식으로 조작한 후 그것들을 재조합하여 그려내는 과정을 통하여 시각적 기호가 혼선을 빚게 만든다. 네가티브와 포지티브를 교란시킴으로써 일종의 착종을 일으키는 것이다. 이로써 대상의 고유한 형태는 마치 깨어진 디지털 이미지처럼 윤곽의 경계가 흐려지고 불확실하게 된다. ● 화면 속에 떠다니는 검은 점들은 네가티브 효과로 인해 불빛들이 역전되어 생겨난 얼룩들이다. 이는 내가 바라본 도심 속 불빛의 이면을 그대로 드러낸다. 어두운 밤의 불빛들은 빛을 밝혀 대상을 보여주는 것이 아니라 오히려 대상을 은폐시킨다. 빛을 통하여 사물을 부분화 하고 파편화한다. 보여주고 싶은 것만 부각시키고, 포장함으로써 그 외의 모습들은(그것이 사물의 본질에 가까울 수 있음에도 불구하고) 어두움 저편으로 감춘다. 어느 순간부터 나는 야경의 불빛들이 내 시야를 가리는 암점(scotoma)으로 보이기 시작했다. 이 암점은 내 시지각에 장애를 일으켜 시야의 특정 영역을 보지 못하게 한다. 내가 바라보는 관점, 내가 알고 있는 것, 선입견, 습관... 이 모든 것들이 내 눈의 얼룩이 되어 사물을 가리고 암점은 이내 맹점이 되어 나의 인식체계에 균열을 일으킨다. ■ 차승연

The series of scenes I represent in my work are not in normal condition but appear in a chaotic or temporarily suspended state. I use visual modification and manipulation to represent this state through photography and painterly effects. I take photographs of the familiar then reassemble the images after manipulating them in a negative manner. Visual symbols then appear which I confuse by positively painting the images. The confusion comes from my application of positive and negative disturbance to each image. As a result, form appears blurred like a shattered digital image. ● The black dots floating over a scene are stains from a negative effect, when the light of the city gets reversed. These disclose the inside of the city I have witnessed. Light at night does not expose objects but rather conceals them. So objects get fragmented and sectioned by the light. What I want to show stands out, while the remainder goes into darkness to conceal them. At some point, the light of a nightscape is seen like the scotoma shielding my eye field, and disordering my eyesight, so I cannot see the specific field. My viewpoint, all I know, my prejudice and habit are all hide my view, and the scotoma becomes a blind point causes a crack in my perceptive system. ■ CHASEUNGYUN
