나선 螺旋

물레 작업으로 만든 기물에서 나타나는 손자국은 언제나 나선형으로나타난다. 물레 위에서 흙이 회전운동을 하는 동안, 손은 회전운동이 일어나고 있는 흙에 힘을 가하게 된다. 흙덩이를 기물로 변환시키는 과정에서 나선형은 회전운동이 일어나는 중심의 축인 움직임이 없는곳에서 시작한다. 손은 이곳을 출발하여 원심력이 생겨나고 있는 흙을통제하는 과정을 거치면서 기물은 완성된다.

나의 작업은 물레 성형이 끝난 반건조된 상태의 기물에 점음각(点蔭刻) 부조를 연속해 파내어 인위적으로 다른 문양의 나선형을 보여준다. 그 작업 역시 움직임이 없는 한 곳에서 시작하여 그 축을 중심으로 조각해 나간다. 수백 개의 점음각이 중심의 축으로부터 시작하여 기물 표면 전체를 뒤덮게 되면 각각의 점음각들은 기물의 형태에 묻혀 지면서 또 하나의 나선형을 보여준다. ■ 김훈철

The hand prints on pottery made with a potter's wheel always appear in spirals. While the clay is spinning on the wheel, the potter's hands apply pressure on the clay. While the whole ceramic process is taking place, the spiral begins at the axis where there is no movement. The pottery is completed as the hands control the centrifugal force on the clay. ● My work features artificial spiral patterns that are created by engraving 'point intaglios' on half-dried ceramics. Once again, this procedure starts at the spot where there is no movement and continues around the axis. Hundreds of point intaglios cover the entire surface of the ceramic body starting from the central axis. Each point intaglio creates another spiral form as they blend in to the shape of the ceramic. ■ KIMHOONCHUL
