내가 생산한 것

작업 형식이나 개념에 영향을 준 사건이나 계기가 있으면 말씀해주세요. ○ 대학시절 몇 날 며칠의 밤샘 작업 후 집으로 돌아와 씻으려고 욕실에 들어가 앉아 있다 보니 향긋한 비누 향과 대조적으로 제 몸에서 나는 악취를 느꼈습니다. 그건 많이 배운다고, 착하다고, 부자라고, 부지런히 산다고 해서 안 나는 것이 아니란 걸 그때 깨달았습니다. 그리고 모든 질문의 답이 해결되는 것처럼 에스키스가 떠올랐습니다. 비록 왜 사는지에 대한 답은 얻을 수 없었지만, 그 답을 알 수 있는 가장 확실한 방법은 그날 이후 알게 되었습니다. 그건 깨어 있는 정신으로 최선을 다해 살 때에만 가능하다는 것을 말입니다.

저 속에 들어 있는 것들은 무엇인가요? 그리고 어떻게 만들었나요? ○ 그건 모두 저의 몸에서 나온 각질, 머리카락, 털들과 피부 껍질들입니다. 몸에서 나온 것들을 가능한 한 원형에 가깝도록 재현했습니다. ● 작품의 형태들이 다르긴 하지만 매우 흡사하군요. 그건 왜 그런가요? ○ 반복에 관한 형식입니다. 우리는 어제와 똑같은 일을 하진 않고, 할 수도 없지만 매우 흡사한 패턴의 생활 반경을 가지죠. 그러한 내용의 표현 방식입니다.

어떤 의도로 저 속에 저렇게 아니 저런 형태의 작품을 만들었나요? ○ 일단 아주 귀하고 중요한 것들처럼 보이기 위한 형식입니다. 사람들이 만들어내는 유형적, 무형적 창조와 반복된 노동을 작품의 주된 재료가 되는 각질들과 동일시했습니다. ● 당신의 작품재료와 사람들이 실제로 만드는 유무형의 것이 어떤 공통점이 있나요? ○ 우리는 피부에서 때가 생겨나지 않게 할 수 없습니다. 역시 노동을 하고 창조해내는 것을 막을 수 없습니다. 우습게 들리겠지만 사실이죠. 인간이 도구를 못 만들게 하는 일은 만드는 일보다 훨씬 힘이 들죠, 아니 그건 불가능하다고 생각합니다. 즉, 우리가 누리는 것들은 부단한 노력이 만들어낸 것은 사실이지만 한편으론 너무나 당연한 현상이란 거죠.

작품을 보다 보니 12와 30 같은 개수들이 눈에 들어오는데요. 그것에 어떤 이유가 있나요? ○ 작품 속의 샤워와 손톱, 발톱 등을 말씀하시는 거군요. 물론 이유가 있습니다. 즉, 반복을 의미하는데 10진법, 12진법, 30진법 같은 흔히 사용되는 규칙을 기호로 사용했습니다. ● 그럼 그런 기호, 그러한 사이클은 당신 작품에서 무엇을 의미하며 결론은 무엇인가요? ○ 우리가 겪는 반복은 태어나는 순간부터 죽기 직전까지 멈추지 않고 일어납니다. 노동과 상상을 통해 만들어지는 무수한 것들과 몸에서 때가 생겨나는 것도 마찬가지죠. 작품은 궁극적으로는 삶 그 자체를 이야기하지만 그것이 지속 가능하도록 충실하고 진실하려면 겸손하고 진지해야 한다고 이야기합니다. 여기서 짚고 넘어가고 싶은 것은 인간과 그 외의 것들과의 차이에 관해서입니다. 인간은 어떤 동물들보다 무엇인가를 만들어내길 좋아하고 자연의 순리도 잘 따릅니다. 즉, 반복을 충실히 하죠. 먹고 싸고 노동하고... 청소나 샤워처럼 씻고 난 동시에 더러워지기 시작해서 다시 씻어야만 하는 것, 전 이러한 인간의 특징에 집중했습니다. 그러니까 더욱 인간적이기 위해선 이러한 인간적 특성에 충실할수록 좋은 인간에 가까워지며 이것이 지속 가능해지려면 진지해질 수밖에 없다는 것이죠. 그래서 인간이 생산해낸 것들에 관한 과장과 오만함을 근본적인 형식을 통해 의도적이 아닌 오히려 필연적이란 것을 동시에 이야기합니다. ■ 김철환

Explain about my work ● Please tell us if there is any incident or occasion that has influenced the forms or concept of your work. ○ When I returned from days of all night works in my college years and was in restroom to take a shower, I could smell the bad odors coming from my body in contrast to the soap with sweet scent. I realized that smell would have been there regardless of the intelligent, good, rich and diligent. The esquiss came across my mind as if answers to all questions have been solved. Though I have not acquired an answer for purpose of my life, I have grasped the best method to acquire the answer from that day in that it is only available when you put utmost effort in your life with open-mind. ● What is inside that works of art? How did you make it? ○ Those are the keratin, hairs and skins that come from my body. I have reproduced the matters that come from body as close as possible in its original form. ● Forms of work is different but very similar. Why is that? ○ It is the form representing the repetition. We lead very similar patterns of life although we do not and cannot carry out exactly the same chores as we did yesterday. It is the method of expression containing such meaning. ● On what purpose did you stuff...did you create works of art in that form? ○ It is form to make those matters very precious and essential in our lives. I have identified the tangible and intangible creation and repeated labor of people with the keratin of which is the main material for these works. ● What do materials for your work and tangible & intangible creation of people have in common? ○ We cannot prevent dirt from piling up on our skin. Although it may sound silly, we can not prevent people from labor and creation as well. It is more difficult to ban people of creation than force people of creation. No, I think it is impossible to prevent people from creation. Although it is true that what we are blessed with is the fruit of ceaseless effort, but on the other hand it is very natural courses of our lives. ● Appreciating the works, I could notice the repetition of round numbers including 12 and 30. Is there any reason for it? ○ Work in question would be Shower, Nails and Toenails. Of course there is a meaning to it. It expresses the repetition and I have applied commonly used principles such as decimal scale, duodecimal scale and Base 30 numeral systems as the signals. ● What do such signals and cycles mean in your work and what is the conclusion? ○ Repetition we experiences in our lives starts from the birth and does not end until the death. It goes for the same with the creation made by labor and imagination and dirt that piles up on our skin. People say that work should represent the life itself in fundamental levels but it should be substantial, sincere, modest and earnest to continuously represent life. What I would like to point out here is the difference between human beings and the others. Human beings likes to create something more than any other creatures and follows the principles of nature well. Namely, human beings are masters of repetition. We always repeat eating, discharging and working. I have focused on the traits of human beings whom must repeat cleaning all the time because we are getting dirty immediately after cleaning or taking showers. Therefore, we have to be more devoted to such traits of human beings to be more humanistic and to maintain these traits we have to be more earnest. In conclusion, I wanted to express that the grandiloquence and insolence created by human beings are not just intentional but inevitable at the same time through fundamental forms. ■ KIMCHULHOAN
