Life of Wood 숲의 생명

18세기 눈으로 바라본 런던의 도시 풍경 ● 영국 작가 줄리엣 로스끄의 『Life of wood』展이 서울역삼동 GS타워 1층 더 스트릿 갤러리에서 개최된다. 한국에서 최초로 선보이는 이번 개인전은 브라이트 트레저 아트 프로젝트(Bright Treasure Art Projects)의 기획으로 추진되었으며, 문학과 역사에 대한 깊은이해를 기반으로 지적이며 참신한 작업을 보여주고 있는 영국의 젊은작가를 마주할 수 있는 기회이다.

캠브리지에서 문학과 미술사를 전공하고, 런던의 코톨드 인스티튜트에서 미술사를 전공한 작가는 매 작품마다 독창적이며 깊이 있는 작품 세계를 선보여왔다. 젊은 작가임에도 불구하고, 그의 작품에는 순간의 패기나 직감보다는, 오랜 시간 켜켜이 쌓여온 시간과 공간의 흔적에 대한 깊은 관심이 담겨 있다. 특히작가는 자연의 풍성한 생명감 속에서 삶의에너지를 탐색하면서, 문학과 역사에 기반한 독특한 예술 세계를 펼치고 있다.

줄리엣 로스끄의 작업은 마치 빛 바랜 고문서에서 발췌한 골동품 같은옛 이야기를 발견하는 과정과 비슷하다. 수백 년 지나왔을 법한 오랜 숲에서 삶의 오랜 흔적을 더듬으며 마음껏 인간과 자연의 이야기들을 상상하는가 하면, 마치 시공간의 경계를 넘어 자연과 인간이 어떤 모습으로 존재했을지, 또 어떤 이야기들을 만들어 왔는지를 형상화하여 풍성한 색채와 표현으로 재해석한다. 환상과 현실이 뒤엉킨 몽환적인 숲의 풍광과 그 속에서 펼쳐지는 이야기들을 감상하다 보면, 어느새 시간의 흐름조차 움직이는 생명체인 양 느껴지게 만든다.

작가에게 숲은 단지 자연의 일부로서 인간과 동떨어진 야생의 것이 아니다. 오히려 생명체가 살아가는 오랜 시간의 무대이자, 문학과 역사가 전개되는 섬세한 삶의 우주인 셈이다. 환상적인 색감과 역동적인 붓 터치, 그리고 함축적 서사를 통해 작가는 숲의 생명력에 관한 예술적, 철학적 접근을 시도한다. 문학을 시각적으로 형상화하듯이 그의 작품에는 자연과 인간의 미묘한 경계가 매우 지적으로 표현되어 있으며, 수많은 시대의 이야기들이 담겨있다. 시공간의 경계를 넘어 18세기의 눈으로 오늘날 삶의 이야기들을 새롭게 마주하고 있는 것이다. ■ 브라이트 트레저 아트 프로젝트

The landscape of urban London, as seen through the eyes of an eighteenth century dweller ● Bright Treasure Art Projects are presenting an exciting young British artist, Juliette Losq at one of Seoul's impressivelandmark buildings, GS Tower through 1 to 29 September 2009, in South Korea. It is to introduce diverse artistic activities of Britain to the audience in other side of the world. ● Miss Losq is currently finalizing her degree at London's prestigious Royal Academy Schools and has studied Literatures atCambridge University and History of Art at Courtauld Institute of Art. Due to her past academic experience, her works are other means of representing her interests in art and literatures from 18thcentury. She employs visual and literature references of those past times into the reconstruction of urban landscapes. ● In her body of work, the possibility of confronting what has been repressed may generate at once feelings of creeping malevolence or whimsical curiosity and pleasure. ● Daily experience is littered with the detritus of an almost forgotten past the abandoned railways, canals and buildings that form transitory sites throughout cities and towns. The modern observer maps - in the absence of an anecdotal inheritance - a fictive history on to these locations: an imagined past life of places and their inhabitants, subconsciously influenced by written and visual media. ● Juliette Losq acknowledges and quotes from these sources, including Victorian journal illustrations and the stylized landscapes of eighteenth-century prints, integrating these with her photographic documentation of neglected landscapes on which the viewer has the potential to project his/her imagination. ● "These pleasures are of a vicarious engagement with fear and a confrontation with the unspeakable."
