The Twelfth edition of art in ASIA

FEATURE Having amassed over the past 114 years ' history, the Venice Biennale has created a unique yet heterogeneous its density, color and the format of discussions. Even the womb of the biennale appears to be flashy, yet the weight of the discourse has historical depth. Yongwoo Lee, the Vice Chairman for the Gwangju Biennale Foundation, says that there are obvious limitations to events which chase after the fantasy of globalism through the activities of heroic curators and artists adorning openings and parties.

ARTIST INTERVIEW Feng Zhengjie (born1968), famous for portraits of women with queer expressions, opened a solo exhibition at Seoul that has been running since September 11. Feng Zhengjie makes new attempts in terms of not only the background but also aura, details, color expression and many other aspects. He suggested the possibility of new works by saying, "It is too early to talk about the future directions but I feel like showing to my audience at this exhibition some possibility of changes in my future works and the direction they may take."

ARTIST Zhang Yu has been the key figure of 'Contemporary Experimental Ink Painting ' in China since the 1990s. Setting out from the very place within Zhang's innerness, though the finished tableaus of 'Fingerprints ' are abstract and full of private psychological symbols and code, they are conversations the artist has had with the physical world. Hwang Ho Sup 's combinations, with their anamorphic juxtaposition of the Buddha and sexualized women, are something that we can sympathize with and admit to have felt before. We can see for ourselves this encounter of comparative situations in Hwang 's solo exhibition "La Force de la Main " at Sungkok Art Museum, Seoul (Sept. 8-30t).
