얼굴: 생명과 기계의 선택 ● 김희석 그림은 선으로 그려진 부드럽고 유동적 형태의 띠가 겹겹이 둘러진 인간의 얼굴로 캔버스 화면을 꽉 채우고 있다. 그리고 피부내층부분처럼 보이는 인체 섬유질 결합 조직인 힘줄이나 인대의 띠로 얼굴 반 정도가 덮여 있고 나머지 반은 자연 생체가 아닌 기계부속품들, 윤활유, 연결선 등 섬세한 과학적 도구들로 내부를 구성하고 있는 그림들이 있다. 이 그림들은 생명이 있는 섬유망들의 띠가 기계의 선으로 연결되고 연구소공장에서 새로운 기계와 윤활유들이 만들어질 때마다 바꿔 끼워지며 자율 조작되는 기계인체다. 마치 공상과학영화에서 볼 수 있는 기계 인간을 김희석은 차분하면서도 동양적인 선으로 그려내고 있다. 또 기계인간의 세포를 상징하는 윤활유가 담긴 둥근 그릇처럼 생긴 것이 가늘고 미세한 기계에 의해 자체적으로 조립되고 있다. 이것은 얼굴 그림의 부분으로 드로잉되어 기계부분에 삽입되거나 다른 작업으로 따로 그려지기도 한다. ● 인간이 만들어낸 기계와 더불어 점점 발달해 가고 있는 이 시대는 물질만능을 더욱 부추키는 소비자본주의를 전 지구적으로 생산해 내는 동시에 핵, 환경파괴, 유전자 조작 등 불안 요소도 함께 조성하고 있다. 이 시대의 예술은 많은 매체와 장르, 표현방식이 쏟아져 나오고 실험되면서 어떤 강한 이미지로 된 작품이 나와도 금방 새로운 것이 요구되어 진다. 빠른 변화의 예술을 요구하는 시대적 감성은 정작 시대를 고민하면서 예술자체의 본질을 연구하기에는 시간이 너무 부족하다.

그리고 이 시대 예술은 개인과 일상 그리고 대중매체에서 많은 영향을 받아 개인적 정체성의 수많은 다양한 표현방식을 만들어 낸다. 포스트 모던을 지나고 있는 이 시대는 빠르게 생산되는 도시문명의 기호들을 복제하고 수용하면서 동시에 예술자체의 형이상학적 요소도 추구하고자 한다. 김희석은 이런 시대적 요구를 그대로 그림으로 옮겨 놓는다. 한국을 떠나 오랫동안 유럽과 미국에서 작업하는 작가의 정체성은 동서양의 정신을 함축시키면서 이 두 가지를 수용하는 자신만의 표현방식을 오래전부터 찾아 발전시키고 있다. ● 김희석의 작업은 지금껏 볼 수 없었던 아주 독창적인 그만의 방식을 가진다. 그래서 그의 작업은 동서양 아무 곳에서도 위치되지 않아 아주 낯설게 느껴진다. 그의 그림은 흑백을 주조로 색채와 선으로 만 표현된 단순성에서 사실과 추상의 대립을 생성해 내며 동양과 서양의 방식 모두를 함축하고 있다. 서양의 문명사는 철학과 신학 그리고 과학의 순위에 의해 발전되어 왔다. 이성적 사유는 신을 부정하면서 철저히 인간과 함께 과학적 이론으로 넘어가 기술, 기계의 시대로 전환하였고 그로 인해 파멸의 길은 가속으로 가고 있는 것 같다. 그리고 역사적으로 가장 높은 인간의 목적이었던 형이상학은 지나간 과거가 되어 버렸다. 기술은 형이상학 그 자신의 잠재력을 극단적으로 실현하는 장소다. 기술의 배후에는 과학이 있고, 과학의 배후에는 형이상학이 있다.

그리고 그 안에는 신과 함께하는 세계가 있고 그 안에서 우리는 사유한다. ● 김희석의 얼굴그림의 기계도구로 된 반쪽 부분은 형이상학을 기술로 자신의 가능성을 실현하는 장소다. 그것은 기계에 의해 조작된 생명을 말하며 인간의 무한한 기술의 조작가능성에서 스스로가 대상이 되어 버린 오늘의 현실을 보여주고 있다. 김희석의 극도로 다른 두 가지 표현방식은 서로 간의 실체형태를 극명하게 드러내며 동시에 모든 것을 해체시켜 놓는다. 서양의 마지막 사유형태인 기계얼굴은 선으로 만 이루어진 추상적 얼굴인 동양의 사고와 연결되어 반전의 기회를 갖게 된다. 극히 절제된 선으로 만 그려진 유동적인 섬유질의 띠는 바로 옆면에 극도로 세밀하게 사실적으로 묘사된 기계도구에 대한 부분을 덮고 있거나 열어 보이게 한다. 피부의 띠는 우리가 인간임을 알게 하는 형태의 상징이며 얼굴은 반드시 이 띠들로 덮여야만 온전한 생명력을 갖게 된다. 그 띠들은 사유, 정신, 물질, 감성 모두가 존재하는 은밀한 통로이다. 띠들의 유동성과 추상성은 자아를 찾는 원초적 공간 즉 태초의 시간과 공간으로 돌려놓을 수 있게 한다. 김희석의 기계얼굴은 존재론의 대재앙을 보여주며 서양의 형이상학적 사물의 이해가 기계문명으로 치 닫은 것에 대한 반성도 함께 보여주는 작업이다. 인물의 눈은 입체적으로 표현되어 우리를 향해 진실을 말하고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 이미 이 두 세계를 오가며 살았고 본질을 선택했던 천재들의 눈은 우리를 향해 바라보면서 이제 어떤 선택을 할 것인가를 묻고 있다. 우리들이 가야할 길 ● 세상에는 많은 길이 있다. 가야할 길, 가서는 안 되는 길, 가다가 멈춰야 하는 길, 가도가도 끝이 없는 길, 누구나 갈 수 있는 길, 누구도 가지 않는 길, 새로운 길, 도전과 모험이 필요한 길, 그 많은 길 중에서 우리는 하나의 길을 가야 한다. ● 내가 이 길을 계속 갈 수 있는 것은 내 일(예술과 과학)을 사랑하기 때문이다. 그리고 내가 가는 길을 사랑하게 되었고, 사랑받으려고 노력하기 때문이다. 그렇지만 내가 가는 '새로운 길'은 혼자서는 절대 갈 수 없다. 반드시 동행이 필요하다. ● 용기, 운명, 인생, 숙명, 믿음, 신뢰, 도전, 모험, 배고픔, 외로움, 어리석음, 이웃, 사랑이 함께 해야 한다. 그리고 남들과 다른 '새로운 길'에 대한 놀라움을 발견해 가려는 간절함이 함께 해야 한다. ● 우리는 매순간 수많은 점(삶의 흔적)을 찍으며 자기가 선택한 길을 살아간다. 나중에 뒤를 돌아보았을 때 그 많은 점들이 비로소 선으로 이어진다는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 내가 걸어온 길이 어떤 길이든 그 길은 내 인생에 가장 가치 있는 길이 된다. ● 그러므로 우리는 지금 이 순간이 어떻게든 점으로 시작해, 하나의 선이 되고, 그 선은 길게 이어져 미래에 도달할 것을 믿어야 한다. 또한 그 선이 막히면 또 다른 선을 만들거나 찾아내서 계속 가야 한다. ● 점과 선의 드로잉 작업을 통해 '인간과 과학, 예술과 과학은 하나다.'라는 것을 새롭게 인식하게 되었다. 인간과 과학, 그리고 예술이 서로 다른 점으로부터 시작은 하지만 결국 하나의 선으로 만나게 되어 있다. 선의 끝은 곧 인간이라는 것을 누구도 부인할 수 없는 결과다.

사랑으로 가득 채워져야 할 인간의 뇌 속은 이미 과학과 욕망이 지배한 지 오래다. 그러나 많은 사람들이 스스로의 뇌를 치료하고자 한다. 더 늦기 전에 자신의 뇌를 치유하지 않는다면 스스로 딜레마에 빠져 가치 있는 삶을 살기에는 너무나 거리가 있는 사회이다. ● 현대를 사는 인간은 욕망이 자라나는 대로 채워주려고만 한다. 그러다 보니 채워지지 않은 욕망 때문에 괴로워한다. 인간이 행복해지기 위해서 우리는 욕망이 자라나는 대로 채워주려 하지 말고 가차 없이 욕망을 줄여버리면 된다. 자연이 허락하는 부분까지 줄이면 우리는 행복한 삶을 살아갈 수 있다. ● 인생의 의미를 스스로 찾을 수 없을 때, 내 삶은 다른 사람들의 손에 휘둘리기 마련이다. 소신이 없는 인생, 자기중심이 없는 인생은 매우 위험하다. 내가 가는 길이 없다면 지금이라도 우리는 '새로운 길'을 개척해 나가야 한다. ● 이번 전시를 준비하면서 작품을 보는 관객에게 자신의 뇌 속을 디테일 할 수 있는 시간을 가졌으면 하는 하나의 목적을 가지고 임했다. 보이는 현상에 안주하는 사람이 되지 말고, 본질을 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있는 마음과 자신이 가는 길을 통해 자신의 뇌를 디테일 할 수 있는 기회를 갖기를 간절히 바란다. ■ 김희석

Face: Choice of life and machine ● The drawing of Hee-seok, Kim fills the canvas fully with a face of a man consisting of fluid stripes in many folds drawn by lines. A half of the face in his work is covered by stripes of cords or sinews which are fiber of man like the inner part of a skin. On the other hand, the other half is composed by delicate scientific tools such as machine parts, lubricating oil and connection lines which are not a living body. This drawing shows a mechanical body operated automatically as stripes of living fiber are connected to lines of machine and replaced with new machine and lubricating oil whenever they are produced in a workshop. Hee-seok, Kim depicts a cyborg which can be seen in SF movies very calmly with Oriental lines. Also a thing looks like a round vessel holding lubricating oil which symbolizes cells of a cyborg is being composed automatically by thin and micro machine. This can be drawn as face part and inserted into machine part or can be drawn separately as another work. ● This era which has been developed gradually with machine created by human being has produced consumer capitalism worldwide stirring up materialism more and more. At the same time, it has created factors of uneasiness such as nuclear, environmental destruction and gene manipulation. As many media, genres and ways of expression are come out and experimented, art of this era requires new one immediately no matter how strong image of the work turns up. Sensitivity of the times requiring rapidly changing art does not give us enough time to contemplated this time and to study deep about nature of art itself. Art of this time has been influenced by individual and his daily life and mass media. It created diverse ways of expression about person's identity. This time passing by post-modern eras is duplicating and adopting signs of urban civilization which are being produced rapidly. And also it is pursuing metaphysical factors of art itself. Hee-seok, Kim transfers needs of this time to his drawing. His identity which was made while working in Europe and the States for a long time made him find and develop his own way of expression by adopting spirit of the Orient and the West as implying them. ● He has creative and unique ways on his work that has not been seen ever. That is why his work is placed neither in the Orient nor in the West and it even makes his work very unfamiliar. His drawing creates contrast between actuality and abstraction from simplicity expressed by color and lines in black and white. It implies both Oriental ways and Western ways. Western civilization has been developed by order of philosophy, theology and science. Rational thought changed into scientific theory with only human being as denying God and was converted to era of technology and machine. And the road to ruin looks accelerated by that. Metaphysics which was the highest purpose of human being in history became out-of-date. Technology is a stage to realize potential of metaphysics itself extremely. There is science behind technology and metaphysics behind science. And there is a world with God in metaphysics and we think in it. ● A half filled with machine parts in his drawing of face is a stage to realize one's potential by means of metaphysics. It means a life manipulated by machine and shows current fact that human being became the object of endless manipulation of technology. ● Two ways of expression which are extremely different reveal actual form between each other and at the same time dismantle all the things. Mechanical face which is the last form of thought in the West has an opportunity to reverse as it is connected to Oriental thought which is abstract face made by lines. Stripes of fluid fiber drawn by extremely restricted lines make the part of machine look covered or open which is depicted realistically and very thin next to mechanical face. Stripes of a skin are symbols telling us we are human being and the face holds complete vital power only when it is covered by those stripes. Those stripes are secret paths containing thought, spirit, material and sensitivity. Fluidity and abstraction of stripes make egos return to primarily place so to speak time and place of the beginning of the world. Mechanical face of Hee-seok, Kim shows a disaster of ontology and introspection on metaphysical understanding of the West that has become machine civilization. Eyes in his drawing are expressed in three dimensions and they seem to be telling us the truth. Eyes of geniuses who have been lived in those two worlds and chosen true nature are asking us what kind of choice we would make. ■ Mijin Kim

The way we should go ● There are many ways in this world. A way that we should go, that we should not go, that we should stop going, that looks endless, that everybody can go, that no one has ever tried to go, that is new and that needs challenge and adventure. And we should choose one way among those ways. ● The reason that I am walking on this way is because I love my work.(Art and Science) I became to love the way I am walking on and wanted to be loved by it. However, I can never walk on 'a new way' alone. Companions are essential. ● Courage, fate, life, destiny, belief, faith, challenge, adventure, hunger, loneliness, foolishness, neighbor and love should be with us. And there should be sincerity searching for amazement about 'a new way' different from others. ● We walk on a way we choose as marking so many dots(traces of life) every single moment. When looking back later, we will find that those many dots became a line eventually. No matter what kind of way I have walked, that way becomes the most precious way in my life. ● Therefore we should believe that this moment begins as a dot somehow to be a line and that line will be extended to get to the future. If the line is blocked, we should find or make another line to keep going. ● By drawing dots and lines I could perceive newly that 'human being and science are one, art and science are one.' Human being, science and art begin from different dots respectively but they meet together as one line finally. Nobody will deny that the end of the line will be human being. ● It has been a long time since our brain was occupied by science and desire which should have been filled with love. But many people are trying to heal their brain. Unless we heal our brain before it is too late, we will be put into dilemma and then this society will not allow us to live a valuable life. ● Modern people are trying to fill their desire as soon as it grows. That is why they are suffered from desire which cannot be filled. We should not fill desire as soon as it grows but reduce it severely in order for us to be happy. If we reduce it up to the point the nature allows, we will be able to live a happy life. ● It is certain that our life will be under others' control when we cannot find the meaning of life for ourselves. A life without conviction and self-centeredness is really dangerous. If there is no way for us to walk on, we should open up a new way even now. ● I have worked only for the purpose that the audience will be able to have time to detail their brain. I truly hope that you will have an opportunity to detail your brain through the heart seeing into true nature and through the way that you are walking on instead of being content with the visible situation. ■ KIMHEESEOK
