Dot

작가 김인철은 조형의 기본요소중 하나인 점에 대해 지대한 관심을 보이고 있다. 점은 그 하나로도 충분한 조형언어를 가진다고 믿는 그는 이 점을 통해 조형 요소의 미분 혹은 적분에 대한 독특한 시각을 표현한다. 점은 또 다른 점들의 모임이며, 하나하나의 점들은 다시 다른 형상의 구성요소가 되기도 한다. 말할 것도 없이 조형 요소 중 가장 작은 단위이기 때문에 가능한 자격 변화이다. 화면을 가득히 메운 점들은 자체로 리듬을 이루기도하며, 보는 사람들로 하여금 의식의 확산을 이끌어낼 수 있는 수단이 되기도 한다.

김인철의 최근 작업들은, 물리적인 공간 장악 대신, 점이라는 소재가 화폭에서 머무르지 않고 모든 조형물의 기본이 된다는 전제를 두고 이루어져 있다. 아크릴 물감을 하나하나 세세히 찍어서 작은 돌기 형태로 올리는 작업은 지극히 단순하면서도 집중력이 요구되는, 선(禪) 수행(선(禪) 수행 : 무언가를 초월한 상태, 언어로 표현할 수 없는 상태 - 선 수행은 인간의 본질, 궁극적 자아의 발견의 토대가 되어줄 수 있다고 생각합니다. 궁극적 자아란, 불교 용어로 말하자면 '無我', 기독교로 말하면 '하느님의 정신', 도교로 말하자면 '자연의 정신', 과학으로 말하자면 '카오스' 선과 악의 구별 자체의 의미가 없는 상태, 아무것도 존재하지 않는, 허나 모든 가능성이 존재하는 상태, 무언가를 초월한 상태, 언어로 표현할 수 없는 상태. 궁극적 자아를 서양 철학적 용어로 말하자면 순수이성으로 해석될 수 있을 듯 즉, 선 수행은 궁극적 자아 발견을 위한 불교식 방법이라고 정의 내릴 수 있다.) 방법과도 닮아 있다. 회화에서 추상의 근본은 실재에 대한 인식을 더욱 치밀하게 하는 것이라고 본다면, 그의 작업은 조형 근본 원리에 대한 깊은 관심과 믿음을 표현하는 작업이라 할 수 있다. ■ 김인철

Artist Kim Incheol is great interested in the "Dot". It is one of basic element in the formative arts. He trusted that the Dot has sufficient formative language by itself and expressed a unique visual as the differential or integral on formative elements. The Dot is a group of another dots, each Dots become again component parts to form different shape. As a matter of course, the Dot can change with perfect freedom because it is the smallest unit of formative element. The Dots filled on a canvas make rhythm themselves and it becomes a method giving rise to the expansion of consciousness from spectators too. ● Recently his works are showing that the material of Dot is not limited to draw on the canvas and based on all formations instead of occupying physical space. The work to dot and build small tactile points in full details with acrylic painting is very simple and requires much concentration. In this way, it is similar with Zen Buddhism to form of the buddhist religion that concentrates on mention. If the foundation of abstract in the art put the accent on elaborate recognition about reality, his works reflects deep interest and faith about formative basic principles. ■ KIMINCHEOL
