Alice's mirror: Image & Imagination ● 『Alice's mirror』展은 거울의 양면과도 같은 어린 시절의 기억과 연관된 사진 작업을 보여주는 세 명의 여성작가들의 작품들로 구성된다. 여기에는 일상으로부터 비롯된 즐거웠던 기억뿐만 아니라 외로움, 두려움과 같은 혼돈스런 심리 상태, 몽상과 도전들에 대한 작가 자신의 어린 시절에 대한 기억들로부터 중첩된 이미지들이 사진적인 상상력에 덧붙여져 표출되고 있다. ● 라깡(Jacque Lacan)은 거울 이론을 통해 자아의 형성은 자신의 이미지에 대한 소외와 매혹의 시점으로부터 시작됨을 지적했다. 주체가 언어의 세계인 상징계로 진입하면서 거울 단계의 상상계는 사라지는 것이 아니라 변증법적으로 연계되며 상상계에서 상징계로의 진입을 통한 인식의 전환은 '바라보는 나'와 동시에 '보여지는 나'를 인지하는 순간에 생겨난다. 이 과정에서 주체는 고립과 소외를 벗어나 사회 의식을 갖게 되며 거울 속의 '나'는 사회, 문화적 맥락 속에서 성장해 가게 된다.

줄리아 풀러튼 바턴(Julia Fullerton-Batten)은 십대 소녀들을 대상으로 한 작업인「Teenage」시리즈들을 통해 자신의 작업 세계를 확고히 구축했는데, 이 시리즈들은 평범한 십대 소녀들이 성숙한 여인으로 변모되는 과정에서 일어나는 감정의 변이를 세심하게 다뤄내고 있다. 이번 전시에 소개된「In Between」시리즈에서 작가는 십대 소녀들이 경험하게 되는 외양적 변화와 사회적 역할에 대한 내면의 긴장을 비현실적인 상황 속에서 포착해낸다. 이 소녀들은 혼란의 징후를 눈치챌 어떤 감정도 드러내고 있지 않으나 자신이 꿈꾸는 세계에서 일상에서보다 더 강력한 존재인 듯한 느낌을 가지며 공상에 빠져 잠시 동안 그들만의 상상의 세계에 몰입된 모습을 보여준다. 전문모델이 아닌 평범한 십대 소녀들의 자연스러움, 자연광과 인공광을 혼합한 라이팅 효과에 의한 기묘한 색감 그리고 비현실적 상황 모두가 그녀의 사진을 특성화하는 하나의 스타일을 창출해 내는데 기여했다. 이 시리즈는 작가 스스로 자신의 십대 시절의 광경을 다시 체험하며 동화 되었음을 보여주며 자신의 십대 시절을 반영한 자전적인 내용으로 채워져 있다.

루비자 링보그(Lovisa Ringborg)의「Wonderland」는 화가인 벨라스케즈(Velasquez)의 어린이 초상화에서 영감을 받은 몽환적이면서도 신비한 색감의 북유럽 특유의 정서가 느껴지는 사진들로, 유년기의 오점과 경이에 관한 것이다. 이 시리즈는 루이스 캐롤(Lewis Caroll)의 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』에서 제목을 차용했지만 내용은 단순한 동화의 일러스트레이션의 차원에 머물러있지 않고 뒤바뀐 세상의 안과 밖에 관한 비유로 채워져 있다. 개인적이고 신비로운 규칙을 만들어내며 물리적인 현실과 두려움에 대면하는 어린이는 꿈과 현실의 경계에서 융화되며 그 스스로 규칙을 창조해 내지만 완전히 실제 현실을 차단할 수 있는 것은 아니며 꿈과 두려움은 또 다른 방식을 통해 내면에 내재해 있음을 보여준다.

폴리세니 파파페트루(Polixeni Papapetrou)는「Games of Consequence」시리즈를 통해 오늘날 성장하고 있는 어린이들의 자유 상실과 틀에 박힌 삶에 대한 숙고를 '자연 풍경은 어떻게 그들에게 상실되고 있는가' 라는 관점을 통해 보여준다. 작가의 어린 시절의 놀이는 짜여있는 것이 아닌 자연환경에 둘러싸인 것이었고 이 사진 이미지들은 어린 시절의 놀이에 관한 작가 자신의 기억들에 기초하여 제작되었다. 작가는 자연과 함께 한 놀이의 기억을 탐험하며 비밀 공간을 즐겼던 자유를 회상하며 자연세계의 깊이와 복잡함을 자신이 경험해온 성장의 아름답고 한편으로는 어두운 면모를 그려내기 위한 배경으로 사용한다. ● 이번 전시는 우리 각자가 앨리스로 대변되는 어린 시절의 아이로 되돌아가 작가들의 자전적 기억들에 기초한 거울의 안과 밖으로 상징되는 꿈과 현실의 세계를 다양한 방식의 사진적 양태들 속에서 인간의 존재 가치를 사유해봄과 동시에 현대 여성 작가들의 섬세한 감각을 느껴보는 기회가 될 것이다. ■ 손영실

Alice's mirror: Image & Imagination ●「Alice's Mirror」constitutes of three female photographers' works of art related to their both good and bad childhood memories like both side of mirror. Memory of happiness, loneliness, fear and their baffled minds from their childhood are being shown through photographic imagination. These accumulated dreamy yet challenging imageries of the artists' childhood become more potent through their imaginations. ● Jacque Lacan, in his Mirror Theory, argued that one's identity forms through continuous detachment and attachment of self-image. The subject entering Symbolic Orders (Le Symbolique) that is said to be a world of language, Imaginary Order (L'imaginaire) of Mirror Stage does not disappear but Symbolic Orders (Le Symbolique) and Imaginary Order (L'imaginaire) dialectically connect. Transformation of cognition entering Symbolic Orders (Le Symbolique) and departing from Imaginary Order (L'imaginaire) begins when the subject recognizes both subjective-self and objectified-self. Through such process the subject in the mirror departs from isolation and neglect finally maturing into a social and cultural being. ● Julia Fullerton-Batten solidified her art career through the「Teenage」series captureing the sensitivity of the teenage girls entering their womanhood. In her「In Between」 series, shown in this exhibition, the artist grasps the subtle change and tension in the girls' physical and social role in the unreal world. These girls show no apparent emotion but seem to be lost in their imagination where they control more power. Purposely working with girls without any previous modeling experience and mixing natural light with artificial light, the artist emphasizes naturalness, eccentric color scheme, and surrealistic backdrop which became her signature style. The artist re-experiencing her childhood assimilates with her adolescent years and fills her works with auto-biographical narratives. ● Inspired by the Spanish painter Velasquez's portraits of children, the young up-and-coming artist, Lovisa Ringborg's「Wonderland」captures the imperfection that co-exists with admiration of childhood, translating into a dreamy and magical Northern European aesthetics. Although the artist titles after a classic fairytale, Lewis Caroll's 'Alice's Wonderland', her works of art are more than a children book's illustration but a metaphor for understanding of the mixed up inside and outside of the social world. Creating personal and magical orders, the children in her works faced with the physical reality of fear between the reality and the dream but they cannot wholly ignore or blocked off the reality. His or her dreams and fears carry on through a different inner-channel. ● Australian photographer Polixeni Papapetrou's「Games of Consequences」series ask 'how the landscape has been lost to the children of today' living in a pre-programmed life refrained from freedom. The artist initiates her search from her past memories of 'playing'. Unlike the kids today, her youth was surrounded by nature, free from restraints. Papapetrou completes her journey back to the childhood by recapturing memories of playtime wandering around the woods in her secret hideouts. The artist uses the depth and complication of nature to draw the both of happy and unhappy side of her growth. ● This exhibition provides an opportunity for the viewer to retreat back to their childhood as 'Alice' based on the artists' auto-biographical memory where the inner and outer of the mirror portraying the dream and the reality allow the viewer to contemplate on the reason of being through the poignant touch of the contemporary female artists. ■ Sohn Youngsil
