꿈의 무대에 서다 Stand at the dream stage

슬로 모션 이펙트 ● 스포츠 관전을 하다보면, 비록 문외한이라 하더라도, 그림 같은 명장면에 열광하게 된다. 갸냘픈 김연아의 트리플악셀이나 장미란이 326kg역기를 들어올리던 그 순간. 수영선수 박태환이 탄탄한 어깨근육을 쭉쭉 뻗어 결승라인을 터치하던 찰나. 동양인 최초로 UEFA 챔피언스리그 결승에 오른 맨체스터 유나이티드 박지성. 10년 전 우리나라 어느 누가 감히 상상이나 했겠는가. 모두 꿈이라 했다. 그리고 지금 우리는 그 이뤄진 꿈을 보며 너무나 값진 승리의 기억들을 가지게 되었다. 이 승리의 기억들은 감동을 넘어 더 큰 꿈을 꾸게 하기 좋은 지금을 만든다. 꿈은 그렇게 대중을 호도하며, 특별한 동력 없이도 스스로 움직이게 하는 긍정적인 힘을 갖는다.

작가 김장수는 지난 1, 2회 개인전에서 각각 사물과 공간을 이용해 유년을 추억하는 작업을 해왔다. 어린 시절 사연이 담긴 구체적인 사물들을 등장시키기도 하고, 이미 폐교가 된 학교의 공감각적 소재를 화면에 끌어들여 유년의 기억을 증폭시켰다. 그리고 말미에 「꿈의 폐교」나 「소상(瀟湘)속에 폐교를 꿈꾸다」같은 작품에서 등장한 폐교처럼, 지금까지 사용했던 그의 추억의 무대를 이상화시켜 인식의 문제를 단순히 추억을 곱씹는 경지에 벗어나는 듯 했다. 과연 다음 행보가 궁금하던 차에 그는 2009년 세 번째 개인전에서, 학교 교문을 벗어나 '꿈의 무대'를 작품 안에 세운다. ● 이번 김장수의 작업에서 주인공은 다름아닌 '축구공'이다. 사실 학교 운동장이 등장할 때도, 축구골대나 축구공이 그렇게 빈번하게 그의 그림을 차지해도, 경기에 날개를 달아줬을 나이키운동화와 축구라인을 그렸을 주전자가 떡 하니 자리잡아 있더라도, 그저 골 넣는 것만 좋은 줄 아는 축구문외한 필자는 작가 김장수가 느끼는 축구의 애착을 그리 크게 느끼지 못했다. 오히려 그저 남자아이들이 소싯적 꿈꿨을 추억 중 하나로 대수롭지 않게 생각했던 것 같다. 우리시대 3-40대 대부분의 남자들이 그렇듯 작가 역시 축구에 유난 떠는 옆집 누구 아빠처럼 조기축구에 나가본 적도, 축구선수의 탄탄한 근육도 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 어렸을 때 친구들과 저녁 밥 때가 되도록 공을 차고 놀았던 경험이나 2002년 월드컵4강의 감격 등 축구에 대한 작가의 애착은 우리나라 모든 남성들을 대신해 프리미어리그에 서 준 박지성으로 집약된다. 깎은 밤처럼 잘생기지도 못한 여드름투성이 박지성, 목표를 위해 수없이 잡아먹었다는 개구리매니아 박지성, 남자들의 로망 UEFA 챔피언스리그에 동양인 최초로 결승에 오른 박지성은 작가에게 '꿈은 이루어진다'는 명제를 늘 확인시켜주는 살아 움직이는 대리인이었던 것이다.

작가의 축구공이 드디어 주인공이 되어 교문을 나선다. 「시작된 꿈1,2」이나 「어느 소년의 꿈」에서 축구공은 마치 살아있는 것처럼 움직이기 시작한다. 화면을 가득 메운 구름 사이로 철봉과 골대를 지나 교문을 나선다. 화면의 공간감을 증폭시키고 운율을 더하는 줄만 알았던 구름들과 나무의 움직임은 실현해야 할 이상(理想)의 현시라는 임무를 띄고 들어선다. 이를테면 이런 것이다. "그림 속 구름은 자다가 꾸는 꿈이기도 하고, 이뤄 내야 할 꿈이기도 하며, 현실세계와 이상세계를 이어주는 하나의 매개체이기도 하다. 불꽃이 춤을 추는 듯한 나무는 꿈을 향한 나의 열정이며, 텅 빈 공간은 꿈을 채워나가야 할 하나의 의식적 공간이다.(김장수, 작가노트 중)" ● 교문을 나선 축구공은 박지성이 터뜨린 꿈의 공이 되어 날아다닌다. 한 시골소년의 축구공이 축구스타 박지성의 공이 되는 순간이다. 2002년 히딩크를 감격시켰던 프랑스평가전에서의 결승골과 포루투갈전을 승리로 이끌었던 골부터 맨체스터 유나이티드에서 활약상을 차곡차곡 그려나간 작가는 경기의 결정적 장면을 슛의 위치, 슛을 날렸을 때 보였던 광고판, 당시 사용했던 축구공의 모양 등을 그대로 살려 성실하게 화면에 싣는다. 주변은 축구장이 되기도 하고, 로마의 대표건물 콜로세움이되기도 한다. 제목들도 「꿈의 무대에 서다- UEFA CL FINAL in ROMA」, 「프리미어리그 통산 9호골-첼시전」, 「프리미어리그 통산 11호골-미들스브로전」, 「퍼거슨의 마음을 흔들다-UEFA CL 1호골」 등 박지성의 의미있는 골이 터졌던 때를 기념하여 이름 붙였다. 그 사이로 어김없이 그의 구름들과 나무들이 들어선다.

기록적인 제목들과 화면은 김장수의 작품들을 자칫 박지성 오마주처럼 보인다. 밑작업(먹으로 바탕색을 잡는)을 생략한 그라운드에 축구공을 띄움으로써 흑백의 강한 대비와 함께 도드라진 운동성을 부여한다. 이제까지 매우 정적인 감각들을 그와 어울리는 재료(먹)를 이용해 환기시켜줬던 작가의 작품에 변화가 생긴 것이다. 김장수의 작품에 매우 기묘한 동거가 시작되는 순간이다. 구름도, 나무도 뭉글뭉글, 매캐한 봄바람처럼 떠올라 먼지처럼 휘잉 감아내린다. 가장 긴장된 순간에 시원하게 쏴버린 결정 슛들은 골대를 향해 분명 날아가고 있을 그 순간인데, 정지되어있다. 모션은 모션이되 슬로 모션이다. 마찬가지로 하늘까지 쏘아올린 공은 떨어지는 수순이되, 마치 달처럼 정지되어 콜로세움을 걸치고 로마 하늘에 유유히 떠있다(로마에 서다). 거기에는 분명 박지성의 꿈 뿐 아니라 작가의 꿈, 나아가서는 모두의 염원이 담겼을 것이다. '나에게 어린 시절 학교 운동장은 모든 것이 시작된 꿈의 세계였다. 어린 시절 꿈과 현실의 사이는 매우 가까웠으며 그로 인해 그토록 많은 꿈을 키워나갔을지도 모른다.' 는 작가에게 '대체 왜' 그 많은 공을 그렸는지 묻지 않아도 된다. 공이 날아가는 바로 그 지점. 골대까지 0.1초의 찰나. 우리가 그의 작품을 긴장하고 보아야 하는 이유다. 그리고 이것이 김장수의 결정적 노림수, 슬로 모션 효과이다. ■ 성윤진

Slow Motion Effect ● Even if you are a lay person, you will be thrilled at fantastic scenes created by professional sportsmen: perfect triple axel of KIM, Yuna, the moment when JANG, Miran lifted 326 kg above her head, PARK, Taehwan stroking through the water with his firm muscle and touching the finish line, and PARK, Jisung in Manchester United running as the first Asian player in the UEFA Champions League. Who would have thought of these things ten years ago? They all were saying that it was just a dream. As witnessing the dreams come true in reality, it now became a priceless memory of victory. As the memory is combined with deep impression, we now have even bigger dreams for the future. The dream leads the public to be motivated and moves them forward without dynamic force. ● In his two previous solo shows, KIM, Jang-su, has presented his works which represents his memory of childhood with arrangement of objects and space. Objects associated with his childhood stories were shown, and closed school, where he used to go, amplified his childhood memories. Like the closed school expressed in Closed School in Dream or Dreaming of a Closed School by the Xiao-xiang (瀟湘) River, his memories had used to idealise the stage, and led the epistemological issues to go beyond simple reminiscence of memories. As one wondered what might come next, he finally have his third solo show with new works that have left the closed school and build up the 'Stage of Dream' in them. ● This time, the title role in his works is nothing but a football. Even when he frequently showed objects associated with football - a goalpost in schoolyard, footballs, Nike football shoes which would have given him extra energy to fly around in a game and a big kettle which would have been used to draw sidelines - as a lay person, I was not able to realise how deep his love for football was. I failed to notice the implication and simple presumed that those were memories and dreams that he used to have as a child. As most of male Koreans at the age of 30s to 40s, I haven't joined any am)ateur football team like the neighbor crazy about football, and I don't have the strong and firm muscle of football player, either. Nonetheless, like KIM, I used to play football with friend until the supper time when I was a kid, and I also was swayed by the football fever in 2002 World Cup that has been spread out nationwide. All the passion of Koreans, including KIM, for the game has directed at Park, Jisung, playing in the Premiere League on behalf of all Koreans. This young Korean player with acne scars all over the face, who have eaten thousands for frogs to achieve his goal, finally made it to the Premiere League and became the first Asian player ever played in the UEFA Champions League, the dream stage of every man. For KIM, PARK is like a living statue which has reassured the famous phrase in 2002 World Cup, "The dream will come true." At last, KIM's football is opening the gate and leaving the schoolyard. In his work The Dream Has Started 1, The Dream Has Started 2, and The Dream of a Boy, the football moves as if it is alive. It flies through the cloud, passes by the iron bar and the goalpost and leaves the school gate behind. The clouds, which fill the canvas, and the movement of trees seem to amplify the sense of space and enhance the visual rhyme, but they are representation of the ideal. It is like the following ● "In my works, clouds are either the dream that I have while I sleep at night, or the dream that I must achieve, or a medium that links the real world and the Utopia. The trees, which looks like dancing fire, in my painting, represent my passion toward the dream. The empty space is the space which I must fill in with my dream." (KIM, Jang-soo, Artist Note) ● The football passing through the gate becomes the football of dream that PARK has achieved, and flied around. It is the moment when a football of a country boy becomes the football of star player, named PARK, Jisung. All the decisive goals that PARK has made to reach his dream are depicted in details: The winning goal of the tryout match against France before the World Cup began; the goal in the World Cup match against Portugal which put the Korean team to the quarterfinal; and all the goals that he has made as a member of Manchester United. Every detail of each moment is shown as it is: the angle, the billboards, the pattern in each football, etc. Sometimes the the stage is a football stadium and it is the Colosseum in another time. The titles - Made it to the Stage of Dream - UEFA CL FINAL in ROMA, The Ninth Goal in the Premier League - vs. Chelsea, The Eleventh Goal in the Premier League - vs. Middlesbrough, Captivates Ferguson - The First Goal in UEFA CL, etc. - also clearly show the important goals that PARK has made. But in every moment of scoring, KIM inserted his clouds and trees. ● Due to the record-like titles and the disposition, KIM's works, in a sense, look like hommage of PARK. As the football floats over the ground - baselining (deciding background colour with Chinese ink) is omitted in drawing - it is given even more mobility with strong contrast of black and white. While he used to use static material (Chinese ink) which complied with static impressions of his works, now he endeavors a change with his paintings. It is the moment when a very unique coexistence begins in KIM's works. Clouds and trees are rising like a warm breeze in the spring and smoothly surrounding the canvas like dust. The ball that PARK must have kicked with full power at the very decisive moment must be literally and figurative flying to the goalpost but it is stopped. It surely is a motion, but it is a slow motion. It is the law of nature that every object must fall to the ground, but the ball floats over the Colosseum and stays in the sky of Rome like the Moon (Stand tall in Rome). It is presume that there are not only the dream of PARK, Jisung, but also the dream of KIM, and the dream of everyone. We don't have to ask KIM, who once said "For me, the schoolyard was the world of dream where everything started. When I was a kid, the dream and the reality were so close. And maybe that was why I had so many dreams as a kid...", why he has drawn so many balls in his works. The point where the ball flies to, and 0.1 second to the goalpost are the reasons why we must pay full attention when we appreciate his works. This is what KIM, Jang-su was planning to: The slow motion effect. ■ SEONG, Yun-jean
