공명하는 신체

'오버 뮤직'은 사운드가 공격하고 관객이 움직이며 때로는 사운드와 우연히 마주치는 새로운 음악의 존재론을 탐구하는 실험페스티벌입니다. 백남준아트센터는 음악가 백남준이 밤을 지새워가며 존 케이지, 칼 스톡하우젠과 토론하며 모색했던 새로운 음악에 대한 탐색, 그리고 '액션 뮤직'을 작곡한 백남준의 실험에 대한 재조명을 수행하고자 합니다. 7월 프로그램 - 공명하는 몸 Sympathetic Body ● 연주자의 심장 박동과 연결되어 있는 전구가 마치 종교의식의 불빛처럼 빛을 발하는 모습은 마치 23세기의 제례의식을 보는 것처럼 강렬하고 낯선 것이었다. 절정 부분에서, 야마카와가 숨을 참아 그의 심장이 멈추었을 때 갑자기 무시무시한 정적과 함께 엄습한 충격은 마치 우리 모두가 절벽에서 떨어진 것과 같은 기분이 들 정도로 압도적이었다.(워싱턴 포스트) "나의 물리적 신체'의 현상은 소리와 빛으로 표현되고 그것은 관객의 눈과 귀 그리고 피부에 지각적인 자극을 준다. 결과적으로 공간은 신체의 연장된 공간으로 전환 한다"(후유키 야마카와) 오버 뮤직' 7월 프로그램에 소개되는 후유키 야마카와는 사운드/비주얼 설치작업을 하는 작가이자 전자 청진기와 함께 그의 심장박동 사운드를 증폭시켜 즉흥 음악 해프닝을 펼치는 작가입니다. 그의 심장 박동소리는 전구의 불빛과 맞물려있어 동시에 진동하고 그것은 '쿠메이 Khoomei'라고 하는 중앙아시아, 투바의 목구멍 저 깊숙한 곳에서 울려나오는 오버톤 창법으로 후유키 야마카와만의 리듬을 만들어냅니다. ● 신의 신체를 악기로 사용하는 후유키는 심장 박동이나 호흡 그리고 목소리와 같은 인간 신체의 유기적 현상에 대한 감정적인 반응을 탐구하고 있습니다. 작가는 이러한 자신의 공연 방식을 통해 공연을 행하는 공간으로 신체를 확장하거나 혹은 주변 환경과의 융합, 혹은 관객과 공연자가 공명하도록 만듭니다. 이렇게 온몸을 사용하여 신체 본연의 사운드로 백남준과 플럭서스와 같이 비결정적이고 우연적인 해프닝을 만들어내는 후유키의 사운드는 동양 고유의 창법과 설치 작업이 어우러지면서 완전히 새로운 맥락의 실험을 개진합니다. ● 뉴욕의 키친과 2008년 베니스 비엔날레 등 다양한 공간에서 공연을 펼쳐온 후유키 야마카와의 백남준아트센터 공연은 백남준의 오랜 스튜디오가 재현되어 있는 '메모라빌리아' 공간에서 이뤄집니다. 이 공간에서 인간의 심장이 내는 사운드와 유목민들이 오랜 세월 자연과 함께 만들어낸 창법, 그리고 빛으로 빚어낸 '23세기의 제례의식'이 펼쳐질 예정입니다. ■ 백남준아트센터

Over Music: Experimental Festival at NJP Art Center July program : Sympathetic Body Title: Sympathetic Body / Date: 25th July 2009 Saturday 5pm Location : NJP Art Center 2F / Artist: Fuyuki Yamakawa / Admission: Free There will be a free bus leaving from Seoul, Hapjung Station 2nd exit at 3:15pm and Han nam dong across the Dankuk University at 4pm. / Over Music is a monthly program introducing contemporary experimental sound, music and media performances held every last Saturday of the month at Nam June Paik Art Center. The program takes as a reference point Nam June Paik's early career as a composer to explore his relationship to music and recontextualize him within contemporary music practice.

July Program / Sympathetic Body - Fuyuki Yamakawa ● Yamakawa Fuyuki, creator of sound/visual installations and improvised musical happenings, picks up and amplifies the sound of his heartbeat with an electronic stethoscope. At the same time this triggers the lighting of a series of light bulbs that oscillate simultaneously with the heartbeats, themselves cadenced to the rhythm of his 'Khoomei', a form of popular Tuvan (central asian) overtone singing in which Yamakawa excels, characterised by diplophonia, which is the contemporary emission of two sounds requiring total control of one`s breathing. Through his vocalisation, he controls his heartbeat`s speed and velocity. While having his fascination with the functions of the human body, Yamakawa also has a storong interest in the relationship between voice and memory. In the installation piece "the Voice-over", which was exhibited in Busan biennale 2008, it`s material was provided from the voice recordings of his late father Yamakawa Chiaki, a newscaster for Japan`s largest TV station. The "voice" used in installation symbolizes certain era in Japan`s history, and at the same time, touches a personal memory of the artist. Both of Yamakawa Fuyuki`s works, performances and Installations, explore empathetic and emotional responses to organic phenomena of human body: such as heartbeats, breathings, and voices. ■ NJP Art Center
