에코를 찾아서

에코를 찾아서 ● 올해는 예년보다 무더위가 일찍 찾아왔고, 그만큼 여름이라 불리는 계절의 기간도 평년보다 길어질 것이라고 한다. 더위를 힘들어하는 필자에게 '여름'하면 떠오르는 기억은 숨 막히는 열기, 지친 사람들의 옷 사이로 배어있는 땀 냄새, 눈살을 찡그리게 하는 강한 햇살, 등을 타고 유유히 흐르는 땀줄기 같은 것들이다. 그럼에도 이따금 여름을 추억하는 까닭은 모든 생명이 형용할 수 없는 빛으로 눈부시게 반짝이는 시기이기도 하기 때문이다. 비 온 후 한층 선명해진 잎사귀에 맺힌 물방울 위로 주변풍경이 어른거리고, 유리창 너머 길게 늘어진 여름햇살이 실체만큼이나 또렷한 상을 만드는 것을 보며 문득 반사된 상으로 채워진 또 다른 세상을 공상해 본다. 에코의 울림_그 안으로의 초대 ● 반사된 이미지들로 가득 찬 세상은 어떤 모습일까. 우리가 흔히 물이나 투명한 유리창, 혹은 매끈한 금속류의 재질을 통해 관찰하게 되는 반사는 물리적으로 일정한 방향으로 나아가던 파동이 다른 물체의 표면에 부딪혀서 나아가던 방향을 반대로 바꾸는 현상을 지칭하는 것으로 곧 되비침의 현상들이라 할 수 있다. 문제는 이 되비침의 현상이 어떤 매질과 어떤 각도로 이루어지느냐의 등에 따라 그 상이 달라진다는 것이다. 즉 되비침은 온전한 복제가 되지 않는다. 반사된 상의 모습은 여러 환경 요인에 의해 제각기 달라지고 그럼에도 불구하고 반사상을 만든 본래 대상의 형상은 고스란히 유지된다. 이렇듯 반사는 분명 자기 자신을 되비침으로써 자기회귀의 성질을 드러내면서도 그 모습은 천차만별, 각양각색이다. 일상에서 무심히 지나치게 되는 이 다양한 반사의 이미지들은 언뜻 반질반질한 종류의 물질을 통해서만 가능하다고 인식할 수 있지만 미술에서 그려지는 반사의 이미지는 그 질료와 방법의 선택에 따라 훨씬 풍부하게 다가온다. 여기서 만나는 반사의 형상들은 우리의 현실과 무한한 가상의 경계를 뒤섞어 놓은 듯 혼란스러우면서도 재미있다. ● 이 형형색색의 상이 펼쳐지는 공상의 무대이자 현실의 자리를 여는 본 전시는 자신을 되비치지만 온전한 복제가 아닌 다양한 모습의 파생을 낳는 반사의 특성을, 숲에서 외친 자신의 목소리를 여러 층위의 울림으로 회귀시키는 에코의 성질에 대입시킨다. 숲 속 여기저기에 닿은 에코의 울림이 또렷한 반복의 음성을 들려주진 않지만 본질적으로 자신의 음성을 퍼뜨리듯, 『에코를 찾아서』展은 개개의 작가들이 내뿜는 반사의 상은 저마다 다르지만 각각이 선택한 매개질료와 투사 방식으로 자신만의 시각적 언어를 표현하고 있음에 주목한다. 반사를 새로운 각도로 인식하고 표현하는 일곱 명의 작가들에 의한 개개의 작품들은 스스로를 반사하고 이를 바라보는 우리는 전시장에 펼쳐진 에코를 통해 우리자신을 찾으며 또 하나의 에코를 전시장 한 켠에 살포시 새겨 넣는다.

박진수_빛으로 말하다 Speak by light_스테인레스 스틸, 백열전구, 거울, 120×120×10cm_2009

일곱 빛깔 에코 ● 에코를 찾아 떠나는 초입에 일정한 간격의 전구와 동심을 떠올리듯 반사놀이를 연상케 하는 거울이 펼쳐져 있다. 무엇을 비추고 있는 걸까? 그 답은 이 전시장을 찾은 바로 당신에게 있다. 박진수의 설치작품은 관람객이 직접 빛의 속성을 이용하여 전구 하나 하나의 불빛을 조절하게 함으로써 이를 반사하는 거울 속 공간과의 연결로 하나의 시각적 언어를 만들도록 권하기 때문이다. 우리는 스스로 반사물을 만드는 창조자가 되어 빛을 이용한 커뮤니케이션을 시도할 수 있다.

에코를 찾아 너무 깊숙이 들어온 걸까? 사방이 고요하고 어둡다. 그러나 이 어둠 속에서도 활활 타오르듯 자신의 존재를 일깨우는 강은구의 외침이 이목을 끈다. 작가는 자칫 무겁고 둔탁한 소재일 수 있는 스테인리스 스틸이나 철을 마치 종이로 팝업 북을 만들 때처럼 윤곽을 자르고, 접어 올려 스스로를 반사시키고 조명을 비춰 다시 한 번 우리에게 투영시킨다. 차가운 금속판에 불과했던 소재는 그의 실루엣을 통해 시적인 풍경으로 되비쳐 들어온다. 숲과 샘의 님프, 에코가 숨어있는 숲 속 한 자락에 와 있는 듯 오미현의 물결과 이영호의 나무들 역시 불빛 속에 일렁인다.

큐브형의 아크릴 위에 시트지로 선을 붙여나가는 오미현의 작품은 빛과 그림자, 수면과 물속을 넘나드는 흐름 그 자체이다. 투영하고 유연한 선의 흐름은 어떤 무언가를 반사하고자 함이 아닌 이미 어떤 대상이 비친 반영의 소산이다. 이는 또 다시 반사물로 치환되어 투명한 아크릴 사이로 반사의 그림자를 던진다. 철과 형광안료, 블랙라이트를 이용하여 몽환적인 빛을 발산하며 은은한 울림을 만드는 이영호는 사물 속에도 비록 우리가 인지할 수 없을지라도 생성과 소멸의 순환이 깃들어 있음을 보여주고 이를 발견하도록 돕는다. 에코가 어딘가에 닿아 되돌아오는 2차적 울림이듯 외부조명이 사물에 닿아 우리의 망막에 맺힐 때 우리는 그의 아우라의 숲을 인식할 수 있다.

전시장은 이들 어둠의 에코를 만든 진원지를 찾듯 빛의 공간으로 이동한다. 이곳에는 비가 시원하게 쏟아진 후 바닥 곳곳에 스며든 물웅덩이 위로 우리가 사는 세상이 새로운 시선으로 비치고 있다. 실제라고 생각한 풍경을 가상의 세상이라 치부한 투영물과 뒤집어 경계의 혼돈 혹은 공존을 시각화한 이예린의 작품들이다. 맑고 투명함을 특성으로 하는 유리로 물의 파동의 만드는 이상민은 외부와 내부의 모습을 모두 투명하게 드러내는 질료의 특성을 활용하여 반사의 흔적을 담는다. 매끄러운 표면 위에 부드럽게 흐르는 물의 흐름은 타자와 관계된 물의 새로운 형상을 남긴다. 이소영은 집이라는 제한된 공간을 자신 스스로에게 투영시키며 실제공간을 환영의 공간으로 탈바꿈시킨다. 공간의 축소모형을 만들고 여기에 주관적인 경험 내지는 의식적 왜곡을 가미하여 출현한 가상의 공간은 작품을 통해 가시화되면서 또 하나의 현실이 된다. ● 반사된 투영물이 실제가 되고 현실의 실물이 허구가 되는 에코의 공간에서 관람객들은 다채로운 빛깔의 에코를 발견하고, 느끼고, 체험하게 되며, 이를 통해 개개인이 인식한 자신만의 에코를 또 다시 반추할 기회를 갖는다. 정상에 올라 소리친 뿌듯한 외침에 무한히 퍼져나가는 에코의 울림처럼, 무더운 여름 전시장을 찾은 당신에게 울릴 또 하나의 에코를 찾아가길 바란다. ■ 장미령

Finding Echo ● Summer came earlier than usual this year and it is said that the season will last longer than before. As I am sensitive to heat, summer evokes images of sweltering heat, sweaty clothes, blinding sunlight and sweat running down the back. Nonetheless, summer is a remarkable season because all living organisms on earth are prospering. After rain, surrounding views are reflected from the water droplets on fresh green leaves and summer sunlight with long shadows across windows creates the clear images just like real figures, making me imagine another world full of reflected images. ● Sound of Echo - Invitation to a Reflected World What is it like if the world is filled with reflected images? Reflection on the water, transparent glass pane and shiny metal is a physical phenomenon of the change in direction of a wave at an interface between two different media. In other words, this is a mirror effect. However, the effect can differ according to medium and angle. Thus, reflection is different from replication. Reflected images vary depending on different environmental factors, but the original form of a subject remains. Likewise, reflection takes various forms while casting itself. A number of the images reproduced by reflection, which are usually overlooked in daily life, are recognizable usually through polished materials. Meanwhile, reflected images in art are much more diverse depending on materials and methods. They are confusing yet intriguing as if they blurred the boundary of reality and an unlimited virtual world. ● This exhibition is a stage for both fantasy and reality where the colorful images are unfolded. In other words, the characteristic of reflection - mirroring itself yet generating various images instead of complete imitation - is applied to echo, a repetition of sound produced by the reflection of sound waves from a mountain. As the echo does not produce a clear repetition of its source yet a dispersion of its original sound, the exhibition Finding Echo focuses on the expression of artists' unique visual language through medium and projection method of their choice despite different images of reflection created by each individual artist. The works of art by seven artists who see and express reflection from a refreshed perspective reflect themselves. The audience can find their inner selves through the layer of echoes and add echo to the exhibition hall. Seven Colors of Echo ● At the entrance of the exhibition hall, light bulbs at regular intervals are placed and a mirror is put as if it is reminiscent of a mirror play in childhood. What does this mirror reflect? The answer is up to you. Artist Jin-Soo Park's installation allows the audience to adjust the light from each light bulb and thus create a visual language by linking the space reflected in the mirror. The audience can even try communication by use of light as a creator of reflected images. Am I deep in the forest to search for echo? It is quiet and dark around. But in this darkness a flame, or a self-awakening shout of Eun-Goo Kang, draws attention. The artist cuts and folds up relatively heavy materials such as stainless steel and iron as if a pop-up book, reflecting itself and casting light to us. Through the silhouette, the once cold metal is cast back as a poetic landscape. Waves of Mi-Hyun Oh and trees of Young-Ho Lee are rolling in the light as if they were deep in the forest where the nymph of a forest and a well - the echo - is hidden. Mi-Hyun Oh's work, in which paper sheets were placed on acrylic cubes, is a flow itself that penetrates light, shade and water (on the surface and beneath). The flowing transparent lines are the result of images that are to be reflected not to reflect an object. This is converted into another reflected image, casting a shadow in between the clear acrylic cubes. A combination of steel, florescent pigment and black light emit illusory light and low echoes in the artwork of Young-Ho Lee. This effect helps realize a cycle of birth and death of a subject though it is difficult to recognize. As the echo is a repetition of sound produced by the reflection of sound waves from other obstructing surface, we can recognize the forest of its aura when light is cast on our retina after it has been reflected off an object. The exhibition room transforms into a space of light as if it tried to find the source of the echoing effect. After a torrential downpour of rain, the world we live in is mirrored in puddles of water here and there. Visualizing the landscape that looks real as a reflected image in a virtual world and blurred boundary or existence is the theme of Ye-Leen Lee's work. Sang-Min Lee captures traces of reflection by creating waves of water through transparent glass that reveals inside and outside clearly. Water flowing smoothly on the sleek surface produces a new image of water in line with the surroundings. Meanwhile, So-Young Lee projects a limited space - a house - onto herself and transforms the real space into a space of illusion. She makes a model of the space and adds a subjective experience or conscious distortion, creating a virtual space. This, in turn, becomes another reality. ● In the echoing space where a reflected image becomes real and a real image becomes fake, you can find, feel and experience the resonant effects in various colors and have an opportunity to reflect on your own echo. I hope that you can have your own moment of reflection like the lingering sound of echoes on the top of a mountain out of contentment. ■ Mi-Ryeong Jang
