韓國의 四季-1.한국의 사계(四季) ● 한국의 산하에는 아름다운 사계가 있다. 그곳에는 산이 있고, 들이 있으며 우리들의 고향이 있다. 그리고 계절 따라 변하는 아름다운 색채가 있고, 우리들의 선조들이 가꾸어온 문화가 있다. 그것은 깊게 뿌리내린 전통 이고 강한 민족정신이며 역사와 문화를 가진 민족의 긍지이다. 아름다운 자연과 풍속을 전통적으로 가꾸어온 민족은 이 세상에 그리 많지 않다. 우리는 세계에 자랑할 수 있는 아름다운 금수강산과 전통문화를 가지고 있는 민족으로 전통문화를 계승하고 발전시켜 나가야 하는 일은 무엇보다 중요하다. 그러나 언제부터인가 전통문화에 대한 소홀한 생각들이 우리들을 안타깝게 만들고 있다. 무분별한 외래문화를 수용하면서 한국의 아름다운 문화를 손상시키고 혼란스럽게 만드는 무지가 팽배해졌다. 물질만능의 시대가 민족의 전통과 본질을 지워버리고, 시각적, 관능적, 소모적인 국적 없는 일회성 이벤트에 물들어가고 있는 우리사회가 안타깝기만 하다. 이제는 연륜이 묻어나는 뿌리에서 새로운 색채의 꽃을 피우기 위하여 새로운 문예부흥으로 정신문화의 혁명이 필요한 때이다. ● 전통문화를 지키고 발전시키려는 자존심과 민족혼은 무엇인가? 우리들의 것이 아름답고 개성적이며 자랑스러운 문화라는 것을 바로 아는 것이 우리들의 자존심이다. 그것은 조상들이 가꾸어준 전통문화 속에 우리 민족의 긍지인 민족혼이 살아있기 때문이다. 변화와 창조를 추구하는 현대인들이 우리 전통문화의 뿌리가 어디에 있으며 그 뿌리에서 어떤 새싹이 움터야 하는지 다시 한 번 생각해봐야 할 것이다. 아름다운 한국의 사계를 바라보노라면 우리들의 고향이 보이고, 우리들의 아름다운 전통문화가 보인다. 바로 그곳에 우리들의 뿌리와 삶의 둥지가 있기 때문이다.

2. 한국의 자연(自然) ● 지난 30년 동안 산을 오르내리며 수많은 스케치와 그림을 그렸다. 계절 의 변화에 맞추어 초목과 기암의 형태와 색채가 변하는 과정을 수없이 바라보았다. 형태가 변하여 본래의 모습을 찾을 수 없는 경우라 할지라도 우리들이 지니고 있는 전통문화의 뿌리는 언제나 변함없는 파란 새싹으로 돋아나는 생명력을 가지고 있다. ● 변화를 추구하는 우리들에게 변해서는 안 되는 것이 있다면 순수한 우리문화의 형태와 색채의 본질일 것이다. 우리민족의 본질적인 형태와 색채를 잊어버린다면 우리들도 전통과 뿌리가 없는 별 수 없는 민족으로 전락하고 말 것이다. 아름다운 강산을 조상들이 남겨주었고, 그곳에 아름다운 문화를 만들어 주었으니 우리들은 얼마나 행복한 민족인가? ● 자연을 통하여 우리들의 모습을 발견하고, 원형질적인 조형언어의 기본단위를 찾는 일은 어쩌면 예술가의 본분인지도 모른다. 조형언어의 기본 단위는 단순한 기호일수도 있지만 현란한 색채가 될 수도 있다. ● 혼돈과 복잡한 현대를 살아가는 우리들의 정신문화를 한국적이고, 개성 있는 문화로 정착시키는 일은 무엇보다 중요하다. 우리들의 언어가 민족을 상징하듯 한국인만이 가질 수 있는 예술적 조형언어가 필요한 것이다. 그것은 바로 우리들의 정신문화를 새롭게 해주는 치유의 열쇠가 될 것이며, 미래의 새로운 미적 세계를 개척하는 중요한 요소가 될 것이다. ● 한국의 자연 속에는 무수한 조형언어들이 숨어있다. 안정감 있고 친근감 넘치는 삼각형, 모든 것을 포용하는 동그라미, 감정을 표현하는 선, 그리고 우리민족의 강렬한 민족성을 나타내는 화려한 색채가 있다. 그것은 틀림없이 우리민족의 새로운 문화를 창조 하는데 필요한 자랑거리가 될 것이다.

3. 한국의 색(色) ● 한국의 사계에는 계절마다 아름다운 색채가 있다. 온 누리에 새싹이 솟아나는 봄이 되면 생명의 싹을 준비하는 노란색이 펼쳐진다. 아름다운 유채꽃이 만발하는 환상적인 들녘의 아름다움이 바로 그것이다. 여름이 되면 연녹색의 아름다움이 점점 검은 녹색으로 변하고, 깊은 숲 깊은 산에 열매들이 붉은 색을 준비한다. 가을이 되면 들녘의 나무들은 갈색으로 바뀌고, 단풍나무들은 울긋불긋 붉은 잎을 자랑한다. 하얀 눈이 내리는 겨울이면 꽁꽁 얼어붙은 얼음 속에서 우리는 신비스런 한 민족의 색채를 발견한다. 한국의 색깔은 원색적이고 화려하다. 산 속의 열매들은 녹색위에서 빨간 색채를 자랑하고, 여인들의 노란저고리와 빨간 치마가 바람에 나부낀다. 농악놀이패들의 복장과 아이들의 색동저고리가 강렬한 원색으로 시선을 자극하고, 고색창연한 산사의 단청 색과 찻잔 속에 울어나는 상감청자의 빛깔이 신비스럽기도 하다. 백의민족의 하얀 바탕 위에 동양 고유의 묵색은 아름다운 색채들을 포용하기에 충분하다. ● 동양에는 오방색이 있다. 음양오행의 원리에서 유래된 다섯 방위를 상징하는 전통적인 색상으로 적(赤),청(靑),황(黃),흑(黑),백(白)이 바로 그것이다. 적색은 토속 신앙의 주술적 의미로 귀신을 쫓고, 복을 부르는 색으로 항상 태양의 빛을 많이 받아 만물이 무성하고 양기가 왕성한 남쪽을 상징한다. 청색은 초목의 빛깔로 생명이 샘솟는 동쪽을 의미하고, 황색은 중앙을 상징하는 색으로 예로부터 궁중의 왕들이 있는 곳을 나타낸다. 흑색은 북쪽에 있는 깊은 골과 물을 상징하는 색으로 만물의 흐름과 변화를 뜻하고, 백색은 태양이 지는 곳으로 청정과 순결을 의미한다. ● 화려한 색채를 간직한 우리민족의 문화는 항상 살아 숨 쉬는 생명력으로 미래의 새로운 문화를 창출하는 강력한 에너지가 될 것이다.

4. 21회 개인전을 열면서 ● 2009년을 보내면서 또 한 번의 변신을 위한 전시회를 만든다. 그동안 사생과 실경을 통한 오랜 습작의 기회를 통하여 얻은 자연에 대한 새로운 이미지로 한국의 산을 그린다. 영원히 변할 수 없는 상징적 삼각형이 있고, 한국인의 정열로는 도저히 식힐 수 없는 원형질의 오방색이 있다. ● 한국의 사계를 바라보면서 그곳에서 단조롭고 감미로운 우리들의 모습을 찾는다. 흑백의 대조 속에 알록달록 아름다운 풍경이 자랑스럽기만 하다. 영원한 우리들의 고향에서 들려오는 재미있는 이야기들이 샘솟듯 그칠 줄을 모른다. ● 전통문화를 찾아 헤매는 여정이 지루할 듯도 하지만 그 속에는 새로운 우리들의 모습과 민족의 영혼을 찾는 의미로 가득하다. 곳곳에 예술의 본질이 숨어있고, 삶의 보람을 느끼는 장한 사람들의 모습이 보이고, 자연의 섭리 따라 겸손해지는 아름다움이 있다. ● 벌써 스물한 번째 전시회를 갖게 되었다. 반복 되는 작업 속에 끝도 없는 예술가의 번민으로 살아가는 삶이 바로 보람 있는 예술가의 모습이 아닐까? 새 학년을 맞이하여 한 장의 도화지를 새롭게 받아든 학생의 들뜬 마음같이 언제나 새롭게 살아가는 삶이 자랑스럽다. 이제 내가 그리는 삼각형 속에 숨어있는 수많은 원형질의 알맹이들을 찾아 오방색으로 치장한 무대 복을 입고 새로운 춤을 준비해야 할 순간이다. ● 이론의 뿌리가 있는 문화를 창출하는 것이 중요하다. 그래서 우리는 뿌리를 찾아야 하고, 전통을 알아야 한다. 무국적의 예술과 외래 작품의 표절을 배척할 수 있는 실력을 위한 노력이 필요하다. 그것이 바로 이론이고 뿌리이기 때문이다. 전통을 알아야 변화도 시킬 수 있고, 뿌리가 있어야 새로운 싹도 움틀 수 있는 것이다. 이번 전시회가 아무쪼록 전통 속에 깊이 내리는 또 하나의 의미 있는 뿌리이기를 바랄 뿐이다. ■ 김석기

Four Seasons of Korea-1. Four Seasons of Korea ● We Koreans are blessed with beautiful four seasons. They are the synonyms of mountains, fields, and hometowns. There are vivid colors and culture inherited from our ancestors along with the change of the seasons. They are also the other name of deeply rooted tradition, pride, and spirit. We are such a lucky people that we have been living in beautiful nature and could preserve our land and custom until present. It is why we should cherish, inherit and improve the traditional custom. However, it is very unfortunate that there has been an increasing tendency to disregard our traditional custom recently while we receive foreign cultures with indiscretion. Materialism has taken place of our traditional values, and only sensual and consumptive events have occupied our society. It is time that we should go back to a revolutionary cultural Renaissance. ● What is our national pride and sprit? It is the recognition that we have an excellent, unique, and boastful culture and custom. It is in the traditional culture that our national spirit is breathing. Although we live in the present time when we should pursue change and productivity, we should give a thought to where we can find the root of our traditional culture and what kind of sprout we hope for from it. We see our native place and traditional culture through the four seasons of Korea. They are where we go back to find the roots and nests of our life. 2. Nature of Korea ● I have done numerous sketches and paintings while climbing up and down mountains for the last thirty years. And I have witnessed the change of shapes and colors of vegetation and rocks along with the change of the seasons. This observation has helped me think that the traditional culture does have its roots somewhere even when it is hard for us to trace its original shape. ● No matter how we try to keep up with change, we should keep it in mind that there is one thing that does not and cannot change. It is the essential quality of shape and color that exist in our traditional culture. We cannot think much of ourselves if we lose it. Considering our cherished land and culture, I cannot help saying that we are such a lucky people. ● I think it is endowment and duty of an artist to try to discover who we are and what we are like and to find a basic element of a design language, which could be either a simple sign or brilliancy of colors. ● It is with much significance that our spiritual culture should be something that symbolizes things of Korea. As Korean language represents Koreans, we need our own design language to express ourselves. I am sure that it is the key to the door of the new era of our spiritual culture, and new artistic world of the future. ● There are hidden design languages in the nature of Korea. They are triangles that are safe and friendly, and circles that embrace us all. Also, they are just simple lines that express emotions, and flamboyant colors that represent our passionate nationality. I believe that they will be all useful tools for newly born traditional culture. 3. Color of Korea ● The four seasons of Korea have their own unique colors. Yellow comes first while the earth is preparing for a transition for a new life in the spring time. When rape flowers cover spring fields, yellow fantasy begins. As summer matures, light green grows greener and fruits get ready to welcome the color red. On an autumn day, you see trees being harmonious with the color brown. And winter is the right time that we find white, the Korean color in the snow. ● The colors of Korea are primary and flamboyant. Fruits in the mountains show off red color among green leaves. Girls in the villages go out to the field to gather wild flowers wearing yellow short top 'jeogori' and red skirt. Look at the primary colors of the peasant troupers' costumes, and children's striped 'jeogori'. And how mystic the color of the celadon porcelain is! Furthermore, the color of an ink stick is so comprehensive that it embraces all the vivid colors. ● We have five colors, 'Ohbangsaek, in the East. These are five colors that represent five directions originated from the theory of Yin and Yang, and the Five Elements which are red, blue, yellow, black, and white. Red is thought to be a spell that has a power of expelling evil spirits and bringing good fortune. It represents South because the direction is flourishing with Yang energy from the sun. Blue is the color of vegetation and represents East where life begins. Yellow stands for Center where kings live. And black represents valleys and water in the North, and white symbolizes West which is thought to be the direction of purity and innocence. I believe these colors are the generative power to create a new culture for the future. 4. Holding the 21st private exhibition ● I am so pleased to hold another private exhibition in the year of 2009. I have painted mountains of Korea with new image making acquired by doing sketches actual views and long practice. In the paintings are symbolic triangles and primary five colors that even passionate Koreans cannot cool down. I have been looking for simplicity and delicacy that our lives involve watching the four seasons of Korea. I have felt even proud when I see the beautiful scenes of our home country in the contrast of black and white. It might be a boring job to search for our traditional culture, but the journey has meant so much to me because I could discover what we are along the journey. I have come across the essence of art and sometimes felt humble under the providence of nature. ● I am holding my 21st exhibition. How should I define a life as an artist? I dare to say that repeated work and artistic agony make a real artist. I feel proud of my life because I have made each day of my life a new day. It is time that I get ready to do a new dance wearing a stage costume decorated in five colors hidden in the triangles that I have drawn. ● I think it is important to create a new culture rooted in strong theory. This is why we have to find our root and tradition. We have to strive to exclude the plagiarism of foreign art and keep a distance from the works of art that have no national identity. Change can be made in the knowledge of tradition as sprouts can be grown from roots. I only hope this exhibition will be another root that will take hold in the tradition. ■ KIMSEOKKI
