언더 인테리어 Under Interior

지하는 우선 비어 있는 것처럼 보인다. 세 대의 환풍기는 멈춰 있고 곰팡이 냄새가 난다. 공기는 눅눅하고 어두운 가운데 목소리가 울린다. 천정과 기둥 여기저기에는 누수의 흔적을 막기 위한 회칠이 되어 있다. 가스관 양쪽 끝으로 히터가 달려 있다. 셔터가 내려진 계단 통로에서 정면을 보면 한 가운데 걸린 시계가 정확하게 양쪽 거울에 비친다. 거울 하나는 배지(방패) 모양으로 각이 나있고 다른 하나는 직사각형의 반신거울이다. 둘은 배지 거울 전체가 반신거울에 비칠 정도로 떨어져있다. 바에 어울릴만한 의자가 반신거울 옆으로 셋 있다. 모두 봉지로 쌓였고 장판으로 덮였다. 바닥과 일부 벽은 기울어진 타일로 마감되어 있다. 화장실 쪽 계단에는 자루가 계속 있다. 시계는 아침과 오후에 멈췄다.

우리가 지켜야 할 일은 종이 위에 명시되어 있다. 어떤 힘을 가하여 형태를 왜곡시키면 안 되는 일, 만약 왜곡된 형태가 생기면 다시 힘을 가하여 복귀시키는 일. 우리는 스스로 제한을 제안한다. 「어떤 못도 박지 않을 것, 그러나 침투할 것」「어떤 소리도 내지 말 것, 그러나 공명할 것」「어떤 것도 만지지 말 것, 그러나 묘사할 것」우리는 습기와 곰팡이, 균열된 벽과 메아리의 인테리어를 이용하여 덧붙여 말한다.어떤 외관도 없이 쉽게 침수되는 이곳은 오히려 더 가뿐하게 외칠 수 있고, 밤낮 없이 가장 나중까지 침범 당하지 않는다.

「파트타임 스위트」는 박재영, 이미연, 이병재로 구성된 콜렉티브 프로젝트다. 우리는 올해 미술대학을 졸업하였고, 간헐적으로 주어지는 일을 하거나 몇몇 신진작가 프로그램에 참여하기도 했다. 작가로서 그리고 사회인으로서 불안정한 위치에 놓여 있는 우리는 가볍게, 그러나 한편으로는 절박한 심정으로 무언가를 해보고자 하는데 의견을 모았다. 단순한 동질감과 언제 찾아올지 모르는 전시기회를 기다리느니 스스로 전시 공간을 마련해보자는 솔직한 동기에서 비롯된 콜렉티브의 시작은 사실 이 프로젝트의 정체성과 연결되어 있기도 하다. 여기에는 우리들 각자가 처해있는 불안하고 고단한 현실을 받아들이면서 그것을 긍정적인 방향으로 전환하고자 하는 합의가 있었다. 우리가 공통적으로 말할 수 있는 것은 스스로 불안정하다는 사실, 그리고 그러한 상황에 나약하게 대처하지는 않겠다는 것이었다.

우리는 이러한 의지를 전시를 통해 드러냄에 있어서 근사한 말과 지침으로 문제를 포장하거나 유약하고 엽기적인 방식으로 포효하고 싶지는 않았다. 오히려 비합리적인 사회 구조가 지배하는 대도시 안에서 소속되지 못하고 계속해서 표류하는 대다수 젊은이들의 삶의 유형을 프로젝트의 방식으로 차용했다. 또한 우리가 당면한 이 유감스러운 상황 자체를 환기시키고 아직 해결되지 않은 갈등을 헐떡거리는 그 자체로 인정하면서, 버릇없이 노려보고자 했다. 이런 의미에서 파트타임 스위트의 첫 번째 전시 『언더 인테리어 Under Interior』展은 아직 완성되지 않은 우리의 말을 위해 발언대를 준비하는 마음으로 마련되었다. 이를 위해 우연히 찾아진 지하라는 공간은 그 자체로 많은 소외된 것들을 대변하고 있었다. 우리는 이 공간과 함께 얻어진 물리적인 약점과 계약상의 제한들을 감추거나 피하지 않고 오히려 그 긴장감을 전시를 위한 발판으로 삼아 작업으로 이어질 수 있기를 바랐다. 이곳은 실제로 왜소한 오락시설과 물류창고가 빈번히 채워졌다 사라지고 많은 가난한 사람들이 순환하는 곳이지만 동시에 다양한 도발과 가능성들이 모의되는 곳이기도 하다. 우리는 밖에서는 전혀 보이지 않는(눈치 채지 못하는) 이곳에서, 모든 외부가 분비하는 무게를 버텨낸 침잠된 에너지를 그러모아 다시 위로 흘려보낸다. 그리고 이곳을 방문했던 모든 사람들이 남겨둔 저항의 가능성을 회복시키고자 한다. ■ 파트타임 스위트

Part-time Suite#1 Under Interior ● First, the basement looks vacant. With three ventilation fans remaining still, it smells musty. The atmosphere is damp, the room echoes in a dim light. On the ceiling and the pillars marks of leakage are covered by plaster. Heaters are set at the both ends of gas pipe. From the end of shuttered stairway you can see the clock, in the middle of the wall, reflected straightly in the mirrors on the walls of both sides. One mirror is angled like a shield; another is a rectangle half-body sized. They are at a distance from each other; the shield mirror is mirrored fully in the half-body. There is three bar stools by the half-body mirror. They are all wrapped in plastic and covered by laminated paper. Slanted tiles are covering the floor and partly the walls. A gunny sack is left forever at the stairway to the bathroom. The clock stands still at the dawn and afternoon. ● Our contract is stated clearly on a paper. Not to distort the form by applying force, To restore the form if distorted by applying force. We suggest restriction to ourselves:「Don't drive any nail, while we still permeate.」「Don't make any sound, while we still resonate.」「Don't touch anything, while we still describe.」We use the moist, the mold, the cracked walls and the echoing interior to express by making addition to them. This room, easily inundated without any interior, makes us speak out more freely, and remains not invaded to the very last. ●「Part-time Suite」 is a collective project of Jaeyoung Park, Miyeon Lee, Byoungjae Lee. We graduated from art colleges this year, and have been doing irregular jobs while participating in a number of programs for young artists. While our status as artists and our living have not been so secure, we coincided in making a kind of attempt casually but urgently at the same time. The plain motivation of our project, which was in the beginning to hold an exhibition of our own instead of waiting for opportunities to be given, is connected to the identity of the project. We agreed to accept our tough and instable circumstances of life and turn it to a positive momentum. What all three of us can state is that we are insecure, and that we won't face the situation in a feeble way. ● In displaying our intention through the exhibition, we refused to decorate our subject with flowery phrases and cool attitudes, or to exclaim in bizarre voice which would be fragile. Instead, we decided to work with the lifestyle of the young which drifts, being attached to nowhere, in a metropolis ruled by irrational social structure. We intended to recall the unpleasant circumstances that face us and face them back squarely and boldly, while accepting the unsolved conflicts as they are. ● Therefore 『Under Interior』, the first exhibition of 「Part-time Suite」, was prepared to be a speech stand for our words that is not yet concluded. The basement, a place that we located for the purpose, stands for a lot of marginalized things. We hope that we can turn the tension from the ill conditions and restrictions, brought to us along with the place, into our work and exhibition without concealing or escaping the circumstance. This place in fact is where small businesses like amusement or warehousing are frequently opened and closed while a lot of the poor come and go repeatedly, while various incitements and possibilities are attempted. From here, in a room utterly invisible from the outside, we gather up the energy by which it endures all the weight the outside secrete and let it flow backward up. So that we recover the remaining possibilities of resistance of all those who had dwelt this place. ■ Part-time Suite
