새로운 대안전 A new currency in Korea

현대미술에서 자본이 차지하는 비중이 과거와는 비교할 수 없을 정도로 많이 늘어났다. 최근 세계 경제의 침체로부터 야기된 현상으로 각국의 미술시장의 전반적인 하락세는 분명하게 나타난다. 이런 어려운 상황 속에서 이 전시는 작가들이 가진 네트워크로 인터넷이라는 사이버 공간을 이용해서 작품을 서로 공유하고, 정보를 알리는 것을 목적으로 기획되었다.『A new currency』展은 인터넷을 이용해 8개국의 16개의 전시장의 작품을 한 공간으로 모아 서로의 작품을 공유하고 선보일 수 있는 새로운 전시 형태를 제안한다.

『A new currency』展의 흥미로운 점은 뉴욕의 전시장 2곳에서 동시에『A new currency』展을 개최하는 것이다. 그 중 하나의 전시장은 SVA (School of Visual Arts in New York)재학생으로 구성된 30명의 학생 작품을 전시하는 공간으로 사용되고, 나머지 다른 전시장은『A new currency』展으로 기획되어 각국에서 전시되는 작품을 프로젝터 및 모니터를 이용하여 실시간으로 보여주며, 작품의 정보를 전시하는데 사용한다는 것이다. 경기침체와 함께 불어 닥친 미술시장의 한파를 극복하기 위한 이들의 새로운 대안으로 만들어진 이번 전시형태는 1980년 전후의 태생자들로 구성된 작가들이 인터넷의 보급이 대중화되어 영향 받은 세대들이라는 것을 감안했을 때 웹 사이트를 이용한 새로운 형태의 전시는 시대를 반영하는 전시형태 일 것이다. 여기에 참여하는 전시장들은 미국의 뉴욕을 포함한 9개의 주와 (St. Louis, Los Angelas, Boston, Washington, Chicago, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Miami) 한국을 포함한 7개국이다. 한국에서 열리는 이 전시는 서른 살 전후의 젊은 16명의 작가들의 다양한 작품이 서로 다른 감성으로 이 시대를 살아가는 인식과 관념에 대해 직간접적으로 환기시킬 수 있는 교류의 장이 될 것이다. 또한 이 전시에서 선보이는 작품은 한국뿐 아니라 세계 각국의 다양한 작품과 만나 www.anewcurrency.com 통해 다시 선보인다. 그 후 최종적으로 다가오는 7월에 뉴욕에서는 『A new currency』展에 참가한 각국의 작품들을 아카이브 형식을 통해 다시 전시될 계획이다. 미술시장의 침체와 더불어 더욱더 좁아진 미술계의 문턱에서 다양한 네트워크를 통한 작가들의 전시형태를 통해 향후 현대미술을 이끌어 갈 경쟁력 있는 신진 작가로 발 돋음 하게 되는 기회의 장이 되길 바란다. ■ 강지윤

A NEW CURRENCY is an exhibition of thirty-one artists, which developed out of discussions within the MFA seminar class taught at School of Visual Arts by curator Dan Cameron (Prospect New Orleans). It will take place in three stages: local, virtual, and global. It has evolved as an artistic response to the changing economic circumstances facing the contemporary art community. The participants hope for the exhibition to serve as a model for applying art's experimental methods to a fundamentally entrepreneurial task: rethinking art's relationship to systems of exchange. ● The first part of the project will take place at 55 Delancey Street, New York, NY 10002, in the form of a group exhibition organized by the artists themselves around the theme A NEW CURRENCY, around which most have created new pieces. The exhibition will open May 29, 2009, and will run for four weeks. ● The second part of the project is a website developed by Gregg Louis, www.anewcurrency.com, on which a number of approaches to A NEW CURRENCY are pursued. The website and blog will serve as the clearing-house for information on the exhibition, and its offshoots in multiple locations, both within the U.S. and internationally. ● The third stage of A NEW CURRENCY is its interpolation in multiple sites. Participating artists will contact their friends and colleagues in other cities, encouraging them to develop their own exhibition, using the same title. The results from this stage will be exhibited at SVA Gallery in July and August, along with works from the first stage of the exhibition.
