사색의 연장 ● 어느 무더운 여름 바닷물 속에 들어가려 움직이기에도 햇볕이 너무 뜨거워서 그저 그늘에 앉아 수평선을 바라본 적이 있다. 약간의 여독으로 지쳐있을 그 때 나의 눈앞에 끝까지 남는 것은 구체적인 사물이나 사람이 아니라, 마치 저속 카메라를 하루 종일 촬영하여 생긴 것 같은 움직임의 연속으로 이루어진 평면이었다.

그로 인해 나의 눈은 하나의 착시를 일으키게 되었다. 그리고 이러한 착시는 배위에서 한없이 바다를 응시할 때와 같이 배가 지나간 후 배의 뒤에 남는 옆으로만 길어져가는 물결의 연속된 잔상으로 나의 망막에 남게 되었다.

처음은 무료하게 느껴질 수도 있었지만 시간과의 버티기를 통하여 알게 된 수평면의 아름다움을 표현하고자 나는 고심하게 되었다. 그러한 과정을 통하여 길게 늘려놓은 시간과 함께 나의 눈과 마음에 남았던 연속된 화면의 색채, 이는 정적으로 보이는 순간이 얼마나 긴 시간의 경과를 통하여 만들어지는 지를 깨닫게 해 주었다.

그리고 눈을 돌려 시간이 경과하기를 기다리는 카메라의 렌즈처럼, 나는 숲과 바다를 지속적으로 응시하게 되었고, 이렇게 나의 눈 속에 각인된 풍경은 단순화된 수평선과 면, 그리고 율동적인 선으로 다가왔다.

작업이 지속되면서 회색빛의 흐린 바다는 어느덧 초록색의 숲으로 연결되고, 숲 위에서 타는 붉은 노을은 차가운 바다 위로 가면서 하얀 파도에 식어가고, 나의 시야는 아득한 황홀경을 느끼게 되었다.

이렇게 나를 이끌고 있는 몽환적인 평면 작업과 선에 몰두하면서 더욱 작품들은 단순화 되어져 갔고, 이렇게 생성된 수평선위에 색채를 입혀가는 과정 또한 단순화 되었다. 아직도 끝나지 않은, 아니 끝날 수 없는 수평선과의 작업은 내 그림과 하얗게 비어있는 또 다른 캔버스에 과제를 던져주고 있다. ■ 이혜리

Elongation of Contemplation ● On a hot summer day, I gazed into the horizon sitting in the shade because it was so hot even to go into the sea. At that time when I was a bit tired from my trip, it was not a specific thing or a human being that lasted in my sight, but a plane that consisted of pictures taken continuously by slow motion camera. ● This made me see what was not there. I could see sea waves rippling to the sides that were caused by a boat on its rear. ● I took pains to express the beauty of the horizontal plane that I learned from gazing for a long time, although I knew it could look boring at first. The time which was extended through that process helped me realize the colors remaining in my eyes and heart that how a moment that seems stationary is actually a result of quite a long time. ● Like a camera lens, I maintained my gaze at the forests and the sea, and the scenary carved in my eyes came to me as a simplified horizon, plane and rhythmic lines. ● As my work progressed, the grey sea connected to the green forests, white surfs cooled the red sky burning over the forests, and this sight brought me into ecstasy. ● My works became more and more simplified as I concentrated on the dreamlike planar work and lines that was leading me to somewhere, and the job of giving coloring to these horizons got also simplified. ● My work with horizons that has not ended, or that can't ever end, sets me a task on my drawings and another canvas. ■ LEEHAELEE
