일상에 숨쉬는 진솔한 예술의 향기-황준현이 담아온 뉴욕의 무명배우들 ● 뉴욕은 예술로 살아 움직이는 도시다. 예술인들도 많지만 예술을 즐기며 그것에 해박한 지식을 가진 관람객들도 많다. 2차 세계대전 이후 60년이 넘는 긴 세월 동안 뉴욕이 세계 예술의 메카로 흔들림 없는 자리를 유지하고 있는 데는 이유가 있다. 전쟁 이후 폐허가 된 유럽에서 망명한 예술인구의 유입은 뉴욕이 예술의 중심지가 된 직접적인 원인이 되었다. 예술을 진정 사랑하고 향유하고자 하는 기업가들의 정신과, 직간접적인 정책으로 예술을 지원하는 정부의 노력으로 뉴욕의 예술이 더욱 꽃을 피우는 계기가 되었다. 전세계에서 몰려드는 관람객 덕에 예술이 뉴욕에서는 사업 아이템이 된 것도 어제 오늘의 얘기가 아니다. 2008년도 덴마크의 예술가 Olafur Eliasson의 설치작 「Waterfalls」의 오픈식에서 블룸버그 뉴욕시장은 이 예술작품이 뉴욕시에 가져다 줄 예상수입이 얼마인지에 대해서 언급한 바 있다. 소문난 전시에 예외 없이 엄청난 인파가 몰려들어, 입장료 20불을 내고도 그림구경은 못하고 관람객들의 뒤통수만 감상하고 나온 경험은 뉴요커라면 한번쯤 해보았을 것이다. 이름 난 공연도 예외는 아니다. 1년 전부터 예약을 해야 하는 공연도 허다하다. 하지만, 이것이 뉴욕의 전부는 아니다. 여기에서는 약간의 시간만 투자하면 소박한 양질의 예술을 즐길 수 있는 곳들이 넘쳐난다. 때때로 벌어지는 거리와 지하철의 퍼포먼스는 물론 여름이면 공원에서 무료로 즐길 수 있는 뉴욕 필하모니 오케스트라나 메트의 오페라 공연도 매년 볼 수 있다. 운좋으면 예상치 않게 길거리 여기저기 펼쳐져있는 무명 아티스트들의 스트릿아트로 시원하게 안구를 정화하는 경험도 가능하다. 이렇듯 뉴욕의 표면에 고스란히 노출되어있는 환경적인 요인은 그것을 사랑하는 이들을 더욱 매혹시켜 뉴욕을 '예술이 숨쉬고 자라는 커다란 유기체'로 만든 원인이 되었다. 황준현이 이번 전시에서 보여주는 사진들은 그 자체가 거대한 예술덩어리인 뉴욕의 한 단면, 뉴욕을 뉴욕이게 만드는 '뉴욕예술가'들의 '정신성'에 관련된 이야기 이다.

많은 사진 작가들은 그들과 동질감을 느끼는 피사체를 촬영의 대상으로 선택하는 예가 많다. 황준현의 경우도 그렇다. 이번전시에서 그가 선사하는 작품들은 뉴욕에 기반한 배우들이 일상속에서 단막 연기하는 모습을 촬영한 사진들이다. 작가가 「Dreamer」라 명명한 이들은 무명배우들로, 자신의 예술활동과는 별개로 직접적인 수입원인 '사이드잡' 한두개 하며 예술의 꿈을 키우는 사람들이다. 황준현이 처음 배우들에게 관심을 가지게 된 것은 우연히 이스트 빌리지의 한 작은 극장에서 연극을 보게 되면서 부터다. 배우들의 숨소리까지 느낄 수 있었던 매혹적인 경험은 「Portraits of Unknown Actors」시리즈를 시작하게된 동기가 되었다. 각기 다른 배우들의 연기장면을 찍은 사진연작은 얼핏 보기에 연극무대의 한 장면을 포착한것 같다.

배우들의 표정이나 몸짓등과는 별개로 백그라운드가 '셋트장'처럼 보이기 때문이다. 하지만 실제 촬영의 현장은 배우들의 거처나 길거리 등 그들의 일상이 주가 된다. 일상을 배경으로 촬영하는 이유는 현실의 자아와 연기자의 자아를 중첩시켜 그들의 이중적인 삶을 한 화면에 묶어버림으로써 정체의 양립성을 드러내기 위함이다. 카메라에 익숙하지 않은 배우들은 처음에는 겸연쩍어 하지만, 사진작가는 편안하게 이야기를 주고 받으며 노련하게 연극의 한 대목을 이끌어낸다. 화면 안의 구도는 출연자의 전신을 클로즈업하여 그 숨결이 느껴질 정도로 관객에게 매우 가깝게 느껴진다. 게다가 스냅을 캡쳐한 만큼 배우들의 표정은 보는 이들을 화면안으로 빨아들이는 듯 생생하다. 그 상징적인 재스츄어는 연기씬의 클라이맥스인 듯 그 열기가 화면 밖으로까지 뿜어져 나오 듯 싶다. 강렬한 조명 아래 선 배우들의 실체는 사진안의 콘드라스트만큼이나 서로 다른 두가지 면모를 가지고 있다.황준현이 만난 배우들은 연기하는 일 이외에 웨이터, 부동산업자, 요가선생, 여행사세일즈맨, 쇼호스트 등 수입을 위해 다양한 직업을 가지고 있는 사람들이다. 낮에는 웨이터로 밤에는 연극무대에 서는 이중 생활은 하나의 화면 안에 각자의 일상과 이상을 포개놓음으로써 반쪽짜리가 아닌 전체적인 삶이 만나는 지점에서 단일컷으로 엮어진다. 황준현이 그들에게서 느낀 생활속의 예술의 향기는 이렇게 그들을 인생의 주인공으로 재구성하는 과정을 통해 프레임안에 포착된다.

가족을 떠나 타지에서 흘러 들어온 뉴욕의 많은 예술가들이 경제적인 어려움 속 에서도 행복하고 당당하게 예술할수있는 에너지는 교육적, 사회적인 기반이 한몫을 하리라. 판단의 잣대, 기대의 잣대를 스스로 결정하는 암묵적인 자유로움은 그들의 예술에 자양분이 된 것이다. 황준현이 진정 매혹된 것은 2005년 처음 뉴욕에 도착했을 때 느꼈던 타국에 대한 이질감을 떨어내게 해준 무명배우들과의 인간적인 소통과 그들을 촬영하면서 알게 된 진정한 뉴욕의 정신이 아닐까 한다. 장르를 초월한 모든 예술가들의 가슴속에 빛나는 열정과 어떠한 조건에서도 꿈을 실현하고자 하는 소박하지만 강렬한 정신성, 이것이 아마도 황준현이 느낀 동질감의 본질일 것이다. ■ 오숙진

The Scent of Art in Everyday Life -Unknown Actors in New York City Photographed by Joon-hyun Hwang ● New York is a live city in terms of art. Not only because of the huge population of artists, but there are also huge number of art lovers who have profound knowledge about art. Ever since the World War II, New York has been the biggest city in the art world over sixty years. The inflow of art population seeking refuge from Europe after the war became a direct cause for New York to stand as a center of art. The spirit of enterprisers who has loving heart on art, and the effort of the government to support it with various policies provided a chance to bloom the flower of art in New York. It is not newly known fact that art works as a business item in New York City due to the spectators coming from all over the world. In 2008 at the opening ceremony of 'Waterfalls' :the installation work by Olafur Eliasson, the mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg mentioned about expected revenue which this artwork would bring to the city. It is also possible in the New York City walking out of the museum after experiencing impossible to enjoy the art work due to over crowded people even if they paid 20 dollars of admissions. Same for famous performances as well; there are lots of shows that require a booking a year ahead. But, these are not the whole face of New York City. Here, people can experience humble yet, quality art if they research a bit. There are lots of performances on the streets and subways. Also every summer, the New York Philharmonic orchestras and Metropolitan operas are available to everyone at free of charge in the park at all five borough. If you are lucky enough, it is possible to refresh your eyes with unexpected art work by unknown artists here and there on the streets. Thus, these environmental factors which exposed to entirely on the surfaces of New York City became a main cause for attracting people more and more. As a result New York became a huge organism where art breathes and grows. The photographs of Joon-hyun Hwang shows in this exhibition are about the 'spirituality' of 'artists in New York City' where itself became an enormous mass of art. ● Lots of photographer chooses a subject matter which they feel in common within themselves. Joon-hyun Hwang is a good example. The works he presents in this exhibition are the portraits of actors who is living and working in New York City acting out in their everyday life. They are unknown actors whom the artist named the 'Dreamer' who has one or two part time jobs as direct sources of income besides of their artistic activities. Joon-hyun Hwang first got his interest in actors after he saw a play at a small theatre in East Village. This fascinating experience in which he could even feel the breath of actors so close became a motive for starting the 'Portraits of Unknown Actors' series. The sequence of photographs of each actors acting seem to capture a scene on a stage. The background looks like a 'set' for a play distinct from facial expressions and gestures of the actors. However, the actual field of photographing takes place on their everyday lives such as their apartments or streets near where they are living. The reason why Hwang selected the everyday life as a background is to reveal the compatibility of identity by binding their double-sided life on one screen by overlapping a self in reality and a self as a performer. The zoomed composition of frame makes the actors' whole body in the screen feels very much close to the viewers so that they can even feel the breath. Moreover, since the pictures are the captures of snap shots, facial expressions of the actors seem to throw a chat right away, and heat of gestures blows out of the picture as if it is on the climax of a play scene. The substances of actors standing under strong lights have different social positions as well as the contrast in the pictures. The actors who Hwang has met are the people with various jobs besides acting for income such as waiters, real estate representatives, yoga teacher, and salesman at the travel agency and show host. The dual life as a waiter during the day and a performer at night is compiled as a single cut at the point in which life as a whole, meets by laying over their daily and ideal lives in one scene. The scent of art in the everyday life that seized in the frame captured through the process of reconstructing them as main characters in their own lives. ● Educational and social basis would play a role for doing art happily and confidently despite of their financial difficulties. Implicit liberality of deciding their own rule of judgment and expectation must have been a nutriment for their art. What Hwang was truly attracted might be the mutual understanding with unknown actors which made him possible to take away the loneliness he felt as a foreigner when he first came to New York back in 2005 and the genuine spirituality of New York City he has come to know while photographing them. The passion shining in the heart of every artists and their humble yet intense spirituality trying to over come despite of any given conditions could be the reason why Hwang felt in common as an artist in the New York City himself. ■ OHSOOKJEEN
