온실의 기억 ● 기억은 몸에 새겨진 상처가 아물어 가고 새로운 상처를 입게 될 무렵의 아찔한 지난 순간처럼 내 몸을 통해 암묵적으로 깨어난다. 기억의 시제는 과거이지만 현재 만나고 있는 의식과 장소, 공간과 사건으로부터 자유롭지 못하며 때로 각색되어 지기 때문이다. ● 유년시절의 기억인 폐광지의 건축물과 줄지어 있던 슬레이트 지붕의 집들, 아버지가 이끌던 목마(木馬)의 기억, 이런 특정 장소에서의 기억들은 척박했지만 지금의 나를 만든 정황들이다. 성장이 멈춘 지점에 서 있는 지금, 서서히 유년시절의 기억을 파괴해 가는 낯선 시간과 공간은 두려움을 준다. 낯선 것들로부터 빼곡히 침탈되어 오는 그 생소함은 의식 저 너머에 있는 무의식적 기억까지도 교란하고 흐트러트린다.

본인의 이번 전시 『온실의 기억』은 기존 대상의 해체와 상징적인 색채의 반영, 목가적인 비구상회화를 통해 폐광지역에서 형성된 정체성에 의문을 던지던 자신의 주체까지도 거부 한다. 오히려 더욱 깊숙이 자기의 기억 안으로 숨어 버리고 미지의 것으로부터 어떠한 영향도 받지 않는 순수한 기억으로의 도피를 꿈꾸는 극단적인 '자폐적 성향을 선택하고 있다. 이것은 곧 스스로 통로를 닫고 새롭게 배치된 어떤 항을 자기 안에 포섭하여 자신의 일부로 만드는 능동적인 생존전략의 실천을 의미한다.

이질적인 환경으로부터 무감각한 본성, 혹은 감당할 수 없는 공포 때문에 우리는 새롭고 낯선 것들로부터 도피를 꿈꾼다. 그 종착지가 비록 원점에 머물러 있다는 것을, 불안감에서 완전히 해방될 수 없음을 스스로 잘 알고 있으면서도 선택은 달라지지 않는다. ● 삭발과 나체를 한 푸른 인간은 직면한 갈등을 피해 기억과 의식 사이를 배회하는 작가의 초상이며, 동요와 불안에 무기력한 현대인의 단면이기도 하다. 이 사이를 끊임없이 배회하는 그들은 지금도 수없이 그 경계를 넘나들고 있다. ■ 최승선

Memories of a Warm Place ● Memories implicitly awaken within my body like the dizzy past moments near the time to receive fresh wounds after the scars of the body have healed. This is because even though memories are described in the past tense, they are not free from consciousness, space, and incidents connecting them to the present, and they are occasionally transformed. ● Even though my memories of buildings of abandoned mines, slate-roofed houses in a line, and the wooden rocking horse that my father used to rock me are dismal, they comprise the environment that formed me into who I am today. Now that my physical growth is complete, the unfamiliar time and space which gradually destroy the years of youth frighten me. The unfamiliarity which gradually stems from unfamiliar things confuses and sways even my subconscious memory which is far removed from my consciousness. ● In this exhibition, "Memories of a Warm Place,"Choi Seung-sun even denies himself by asking questions about his own identity formed in an abandoned mining area through the de construction of pre-existing objects, symbolic color schemes, and idyllic non-objective painting. Moreover, he chooses extreme autistic features to hide more deeply in his memories and dream of escaping to innocent memories which are never affected by unknown things. This simultaneously means practicing an active living strategy, by which he independently closes off routes while including freshly arranged things inside himself, and incorporating them as a part of himself. ● Because of desensitized human nature caused by different environments and overwhelming fears, we dream of escaping from new and unfamiliar things. Even though the ultimate destination is the same place as where we began and we know well that we cannot be completely free from fears, we do not choose any differently. ● The naked green human with a shaved head is the artist's representation of himself, who is roaming around the memories and consciousness in an attempt to avoid facing conflicts and is also a portrait of modern humanity enervated by uncertainty and fears. Those who roam continuously in this way, still go back and forth over the borders. ■ CHOISEUNGSUN
