홍원석 작가는 야간을 달리는 자동차와 그 주변 풍경을 통해 현대 도시의 단면들과 그 속에서 살아가는 현대인의 삶을 묘사한다. 주로 깊고 짙은 푸른색의 어두운 밤을 배경으로 하는 그의 작업은 멀리서 보아 평화로운 밤 풍경이지만, 구석구석 숨어있는 일상탈출적 요소들. 즉, 하늘에서 내려오는 낙하산, 역방향으로 질주하는 자동차 그리고 강가의 우주인 등을 통해 동시대의 현실과 삶 그리고 현대인의 불안을 은유적으로 표현한다. ■ 갤러리현대 강남_윈도우 갤러리

홍원석의 그림에서 깊고 푸른 밤을 가르는 노란 빛은 근대미술의 신화가 되어버린 그림 반 고흐의 「별이 빛나는 밤에」와 같은 낭만적인 정서가 깔려 있다. 반 고흐의 그림은 이미 산업혁명을 겪고 난 시대의 산물임에도 불구하고, 아직 자연을 바탕으로 살아가는 삶에 비추어진 마술적이고도 초자연적 비전이 있었다면, 홍원석의 그림은 자동차로 이동하는 삶이 일상이 된 현대의 풍경이다. 반 고흐의 빛이 척박하고 비루한 현실로부터 무한한 천공으로 시야를 돌리게 하듯, 홍원석의 그림 속 노란 빛은 일상을 소격하는 작용을 한다. 자동차를 타고 가는 시간적인 움직임 속에서 전조등 앞에 갑자기 등장하는 장면들은, 무대 위에 갑작스레 켜지는 조명처럼, 어둠 속에서 지나가는 영화의 한 장면처럼, 연속된 시공간의 절단면을 보여주는 것이다. 그 절단면 속에는 현실적 요소들이 있지만, 생경한 조합으로 인해 몽환적이고 초현실적인 분위기로 변모한다. 황량하면서도 매혹적인 푸른 공간 속의 자동차는 때로 망망대해 위에 표류하는 작은 배나 우주를 떠돌아다니는 우주선 같은 모습이 중첩된다. 자동차 외부는 외계의 차원으로까지 확장된다. 홍원석의 작품에서 야간 운전은 무한한 시공간 속에 홀로 있으며, 뚜렷한 목적 없이 유목하는 존재 조건을 시적으로 표현하고 있다.

주체와 주체의 확장이라고 할 수 있는 자동차를 타고 가는 경험은 인생에 대한 비유가 된다. 또한 자동차 안에서 외부를 보고 경험하는 주체는, 모든 것이 현실과는 유리된 컨트롤 박스에 의해 조정되는 현대적 생산과 소비의 조건을 투사하는 일종의 인터페이스 앞의 현대인을 떠오르게 한다. 어떤 장면이 등장하든 그것은 지나갈 것이고 운전자는 무사히 통과할 수 있을 것이다. 현실과 환상을 끝장내는 충돌 사고만 일어나지 않는다면 말이다. 홍원석의 그림 속에 내재된 낭만적 정서는 소우주 속의 안전함, 외부와 차단된 거리감으로 인해 가능하다. 전조등 앞에 떠오른 다양한 장면들 속에는 물리적이거나 정치적인 재난 등 당면한 급박한 현실이 섞여 있기도 하지만, 머나먼 풍경일 뿐이다. 그의 그림은 혹독한 삶의 조건 속에서 탄생한 낭만주의가 동화 같은 아늑한 소비품으로 전락할 수 있다는 역설을 상기 시킨다. 그러나 행복한 상상의 이면에 불안이 있듯, 환상의 이면에는 현실이 있다. 작가가 헤쳐 나가야 할 세상을 컴컴한 밤으로 간주하는 것 자체가 현실을 바라보는 비관성이 반영된 것이다. 그러나 물리적인 한계 저 너머까지 확장된 밝은 전조등은 한계를 모르는(또는 무시하는), 요컨대 낭만적 주체만이 가질 수 있는 강력한 내부 에너지를 상징하고 있다. Hong, Wonseok seeks the true shapes of our life by showing the car speeding through the road against the dark blue sky. His works look like a peaceful. night in the distance, but have the hint of real. life when we look closer. With the parachute from the sky, a car running in the opposite direction and the cosmonaut at the river which do the role as double lines for his works. The yellow light that crosses deep, blue night has romantic mood like the one in Vincent van Gogh's 'Starry Night,' which became the myth of modern art. Although drew in post-industrial revolution, Gogh's picture has mystic, supernatural mood, portraying the nature, but, in Hong's drawing, the situation has changed to a modern setting, cars being common vehicles. Like in Gogh's painting, attracting our eyes from harsh, contemptible reality to infinite universe, the yellow light in Hong's drawing refreshes our attention from our everyday life. Similar to a sudden light-on on the stage or a scene from a movie, objects that appear in front of headlights shows the gap between time and space. The abrupt, unexpected combination of images provides surreal and mystic mood. The car driving down the empty nigh road under barren yet mystical blue sky often coincides with a drifting, tiny ship or a wandering spaceship. The outer world is expanded even to space. Gliding alone in an infinite universe without any clear objective is a portrayal of Hong's night-driving. ● Passing by sceneries- the journey is just like a life. The individual, experiencing and observing from inside reminds of a modern man blocked by reality and controlled by a system that decides every process of modern production and consumption. Whatever comes along the way, the sights will pass by, and the driver will continue his way, unless an accident occurs. The romantic mood in Hong's painting is due to the safe setting within micro universe, blocked and secured from outside world. Diverse snapshots that appear in front of the headlights often reflect the urgent reality, something physical or political, but within the painting, it's nobody's business. The drawing exposes the paradox that in harsh reality, the romanticism can be a sweet fairy tale. However, as happy imagination co-exists with anxiety, there comes reality at the backside of fantasy. The dark night, symbolizing the reality shows the artist's pessimistic view of the world. Yet, the border-breaking (or ignoring) bright yellow light, glowing far over the physical boundary signifies a strong inner energy that romantic subject can only possess.
