The Wave of Flame

희망의 불꽃을 찾아서 ● 그리스 신화에서 인간은 프로메테우스로부터 불을 선물로 받는다. 불은 인간의 생활을 변화 시켰다. 불은 음식을 구워 먹음으로써 맛을 알게 했으며, 밤에도 깨어 활동할 수 있게 했고, 또한 석기시대에서 청동기에 이어 철기시대로의 문명발전을 이룩하게 했다. 이처럼 불은 인간 생활을 여타의 동물과 구분 짓게 했고, 신의 경지에 더 가깝게 했다. 또한 자연에서 온 것이지만 인간에게 문명발전을 이룩하게 한 근원인 이 불에 의해 다룰 수 있게 된 철은 근대에서 현대로 이어오는 기계문명과 과학 발전의 상징이기도 하다.

작가도 그의 노트에 밝혔던 것처럼 불은 두려움의 대상임과 동시에 희망의 빛이라는 양면의 이미지를 가지고 있다. 그러나 김성대의 작품에서 불은 두려움의 대상이라기보다는 희망의 빛이라고 볼 수 있다. 가는 황동 선이 결을 내어 춤추는 불꽃의 형태를 만들고, 발광 소재인 LED는 그 틈새로 빛을 발산한다. 고대 그리스 때부터 사용되었던 놋쇠라고도 불리는 황동 소재와 현대 과학발전을 의미하는 첨단 발광 반도체 소재인 LED는 과거로부터 현재를 이어주는 불의 역사적인 발전의 상징이라고 볼 수 있겠다. 작가의 1회 개인전에서 보여준 철선의 용접 자국으로 마티에르를 강조한 작품에서 나아간 이번 전시의 작품들은 좀 더 매끄러운 촉감의 브론즈를 이용하여 불의 이미지를 좀 더 확실하게 부각시켜 준다.

한편 작가는 불의 형태와 빛의 이미지를 나타낸 이번 작품들에서 희망을 나타내고자했다. 작품은 떠오르는 태양이 도시의 건물 틈, 다리 사이, 창살을 삐져나오는 그때를 연상하게 한다. 작품에서 또 한 가지 연상되는 것은 인간에게 이로움을 주고자 자신을 희생한 프로메테우스의 신화에서 이어지는 잘 알려진 이야기인 판도라의 상자이다. 제우스에게 여는 것이 금지된 상자와 호기심을 선물 받은 판도라는 이 호기심을 이기지 못하고 상자를 열게 되었다. 이 때 상자에 가두어 두었던 욕심, 시기, 질투, 질병 등 인간을 해치는 많은 것들은 세상으로 튀어나갔고, 상자에 남은 것은 '희망'이었다. 위협적이고 각박한 사회에서도 나를 지탱하게 해주는 것은 마음속에 남아 있는 희망의 불꽃인 것이다.

어느 때보다도 많은 사회적 문제를 안고 있는 이 도시야 말로 '희망'이 필요하다. 작가는 처음엔 틈으로 새어 나오는 빛이지만 나중엔 폭발하여 넘쳐흐르는 용암과 같은 불꽃의 열정을 작품 속에 담고자 했다. 이 희망에 대한 열정이 작가의 작품을 통해 어려움을 이기지 못하고 점점 유약해져 가고, 쓰러져 가는 현대인에게 치유의 의미로 다가갈 수 있었으면 한다. ■ 나진희

To find the flame of hope ● In the Greek myth, men receives fire as a gift from Prometheus. Fire changed the lives of human-beings. Fire made people to know taste by enabling them to eat roasted food, to stay awake and be active at night, and also to achieve development of civilization from the Stone age through the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. Like this, fire made the lives of human-beings different from those of other animals and to be near the state of the God. Also, iron which human-beings came to able to handle favored by fire, though it came from nature, which was the origin of the development of human civilization, was as well a symbol of machine civilization and scientific development leading from the modern time to the present. ● As the artist made it clear in his note, fire has an image of both sides, subject of fear and light of hope. But, in the work of Kim Seongdae, fire is rather light of hope than subject of fear. Thin bronze lines make a shape of flame dancing making waves and a LED which is an emitting material radiates light through the opening. Bronze material which has been used from the ancient Greek age being also called brass and LED which is a high-tech emitting semiconductor material symbolizing modern scientific development can be as well considered symbols of historic development of fire connecting the past to the present. The work of this exhibition more cleanly engrave the image of fire using more velvety touch of bronze advancing from the work of the first personal exhibition of the artist which emphasized matiere through the welding scars of iron wire. ● In the meantime, the artist this time tried to represent hope in his work which showed the shape of fire and image of light. The work reminds me of the time when the sun passes through the gap between buildings, between bridges and between window bars. Another thing the work reminds me of is the well-known story of Pandora's box coming from the myth of Prometheus who sacrificed himself to give benefits to human-beings. Pandora who got a box which is prohibited to be opened together with curiosity from Zeus as gifts opened the box yielding to the curiosity. At this time, many things which harm human-beings such as greed, envy, jealousy and diseases jumped out of the box to the world and what was left in the box was hope. Even in the threatening and stonyhearted world, what is supporting me is the flame of hope left in my mind. ● This city which has much social problems than any other time need 'hope'. The artist wanted to incorporate with the work the passion of flame which at first is light escaping through gaps but later explodes and flows like lava. I hope this passion for hope may come as a cure to the modern who are becoming weaker and weaker not overcoming difficulties and breaking down, through the work of the artist. ■ NAJINHEE
