ROMAN DREAM

세철, 로마를 그리다 ● 폐허의 풍경 속엔 우리가 알지 못하는 아주 오래 된 비밀스러운 이야기들이 존재한다. 낯설음과 미지의 세계에 대한 두려움, 이런 수수께끼 가득한 폐허에 앞에 서게 되면 지구상에 우리보다 훨씬 먼저 왔다간 이들이 영원히 우리 안에 있을 거라는 믿음이 생겨나 이로 인해 내 안에 잠자는 태고적 무의식의 기억까지 깨워준다. 깊은 밤, 아직도 저 폐허 속 한구석에서는 고대인의 목소리가 들려온다. 바로 시공(時空)을 초월하는 순간이다.

지울 수 없었던 강렬한 인상의 로마. 로마와의 첫 만남 이후 줄곧 나는 다시 로마를 만나고 보고자 했다. 도대체 그 곳에서 나는 무엇을 보았던 말인가? 무엇이 나를 그토록 로마로 이끌게 했던가? 나는 그 기억과 꿈들을 지난 시간 나의 그림으로 재현하고자 했다. 다시 로마를 찾아가고 시간은 그렇게 흘러 결국 지금 나의 눈과 마음에 비추어지는 것은 로마의 경이로운 유적도 인류의 위대한 예술품도 아닌 그저 우리보다 먼저 살다간 이들의 영혼이였다. ■ 오세철

Se-Chul, enshrining Roma in my heart ● There exist old secrets veiled for a long time in deserted scenery. Fears for strangeness and unknown world. When I am faced with the ruins full of these mysteries, the belief that the spirit of the people who lived long before must lie inside us occurs in me. And this evokes even the memories lying in my unconsciousness from time immemorial. The dead of night, yet, I hear the voices of people in history from a corner of the ruins. This is the moment that transcends the space-time. ● Roma with such a strong impression that is unforgettable! Ever since I saw Roma with my own eyes for the first time, I have been craving for Roma again and again. What on earth did I see in Roma ? What on earth indulged me in Roma so deadly ? I tried to represent the memories and dreams into my canvas over the past time. Revisiting Roma and time passing by thereafter, finally, I witness that what is reflected in my eyes and heart is not the historical ruins of Roma and the great pieces of art in humankind but, only the spirit of the people already gone long before. ■ OHSECHUL
