ANOTHER LANDSCAPE

동양화의 영역 확장 ● 장재록은 '먹'이라는 전통적인 재료와 동양화 기법으로 자동차라는 현대적이고 견고한 소재를 그리는 작가이다. 동양화를 전공한 그는 현대적인 삶의 풍경으로 동양화의 소재를 확장시켰다. 과거의 전통적인 산수화가 당시의 풍경과 가치관을 반영하고 있다면, 오늘을 사는 그에게는 자동차가 있는 풍경이 익숙한 현실인 것이다. 그는 몇 년 동안의 작업 속에서 일관되게 '또 다른 풍경'이라는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 자동차, 샹들리에, 보석… 그것은 외부의 것일 수도, 내부의 것일 수도, 물질적인 것일 수도, 정신적인 풍경일 수도 있다. 이들은 공통적으로 반짝이고 광택이 있는 소재이다. 유광의 소재들은 그 사물 자체의 모습 외에 그 사물을 통해서 비쳐지는 또 다른 풍경을 중첩되게 표현할 수 있기에 재미있는 소재가 될 수 있다. 단색의 먹이지만 미묘한 농담의 조절만으로 이 사물들은 실재감을 획득했고, 특히 광택의 표현이나 화려함은 보는 이들의 눈을 사로잡기에 충분하다. 자동차에 비친 풍경 또한 자동차의 사실감을 한층 더 부각시키고 있다.

중첩된 풍경 ● 그런데, 장재록의 그림 속에 등장하는 차들은 대부분이 디자인이 멋진 외국산 자동차이다. 우리 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 자동차들을 제치고, 자동차 전시장이나 모터쇼 같은 곳에서 더 쉽게 접할 수 있을 것 같은 모델들을 그려놓았다. 이들은 그의 그림에서 주인공으로 부각되어 있고, 각각의 자동차는 가장 멋지게 보이는 각도로 그려져 있다. 대신 차를 둘러싼 풍경들은 간략화 되어 있거나 한쪽으로 밀려나 있다. 자동차가 주는 독특한 상징성으로 미루어 볼 때, 이 풍경은 현대인들의 욕망, 특히 남성들의 욕망을 단적으로 보여주는 것 같다. 어떤 이들에겐 이룰 수 없는 꿈으로 비쳐질 풍경… 어쩌면 이것은 물질적인 가치를 우리 삶의 전면에 내세운 체 살아가고 있는 현대인들의 정신적인 풍경인지도 모른다. 그의 그림에는 또 다른 풍경이 존재한다. 평소 눈 여겨 보지 않으면 그냥 지나칠 수도 있는 자동차에 비친 풍경. 차라는 대상에만 집중할 땐 보기 힘든 풍경이다. 자연이기도 하고, 주변의 건물들이기도 한 이 풍경이 현실적이냐 아니냐는 중요하지 않을 것이다. 어쨌든 이 풍경으로 인해 한 템포 쉬어갈 여유를 얻을 수 있을 테니까 말이다. ■ 장유정

Expand province of Oriental painting ● Jang Jae Rok draws a car which is symbol of modern technology by Korean ink and technique of an Oriental painting. He who studied an Oriental painting expanded his painting material to modern life. While landscape and sense of values of those days were reflected in a traditional landscape painting in the past, landscape with car is familiar with him who lives in modern society. He is consistently focusing on "another landscape" in his works for a few years. Cars, chandelier and jewelry… It may be exterior landscape or interior one, and material thing or spiritual. With the glitter and luster in common, the artist can express not only landscape with them itself but also another landscape which reflected in their surface. They were gotten reality by just various shading black color. Especially, luster and splendor of them are enough for capturing the attention.

Another Landscape ● By the way, most of cars shown up in his painting are well designed foreign-made ones. They are easy to be seen at automobile exhibition hall or auto show rather than around our real life. They played the hero and take their place at a gorgeous angle in his painting. Instead, the background was simplified and relegated to the side. Seeing from symbolic meaning of car, it was seems to be revealed desire of modern people, especially men's. It may be shown to unrealizable dream to some people. It may be also represented spiritual landscape of modern people who put priority to material values in their life. There is another landscape or landscape reflected in his painting. It is easy to pass by, if we don't have to take note. We are also easy to overlook in the case of only focusing on the car. It is not important whether this landscape is real or not. For this landscape we can keep our composure for a little while. ■ JANGYOUJUNG
