잘려진 京

이번 전시를 끌어가는 하나의 테마는 필요에 의해 선택되어지는 공간에 대한 이미지화이다. 작가들이라면, 또 집을 구하는 사람이라면 흔히 겪게 되는 작업실구하기, 또는 집구하기 프로젝트- 요즘은 무언가 필요에 의해 장소를 구하고자 한다면 보통의 경우, 부동산을 통해 각 지역을 돌며 본인의 상황에 가장 알맞다고 생각되는 곳을 구하게 된다. 특히 도시에 사는 사람들이라면 보다 많은 비슷한 환경들에 대한 선택권이 주어지는데 그 한계에 있어서는 전혀 자유롭지 않다. 비교할 수 있는 경우의 수가 많은 것은 보다 많은 정보를 필요로 하게 되며, 네트워크로 되어져 있는 오늘날의 시스템에서 오는 스트레스일 수 있다. ● 서울의 각 구역별로 나뉘어진 장소들은 일정한 상황과 한계 내에서의 공통분모를 가진 공간들이다.

예를 들자면 일정한 보증금과 월세를 가지고 사무실이나 원룸, 오피스텔을 구하러 다니는 것처럼 말이다. 여기에서 지역은 중요하지 않고 자신의 상황과 한계가 더 중요시되는 아이러니를 가지게 된다. ● 태어나면서 살아지게 되는 고향이나 집이라는 정서적 의미보다는 필요에 의해 선택되어지는 어떤 장소라는 의미가 더 강해지는 것이다. 특히나 목적성을 가진 공간이라면 더욱 그러하다. 작업실이라는 목적성 공간이 가지는 또 하나의 아이러니는 작가들에게 여러 가지 부르주아적인 조건을 강요하게 되는데 넒은 공간은 말할 것도 없고 넒은 복도와 높은 천장, 그리고 크고 높은 문이다.

이는 시대적으로 또는 구조적으로 낙후된 지역이나 오래된 건물에서는 찾아 볼 수 없는 조건이다. 그러나 다시 생각해보면 통상적인 개념의 생산과는 또 다른(?) 생산을 하는 작가들에게 있어서는 그 부르주아적인 조건이 맞아떨어져야 하는 것이 당연한 것일 수도 있다. 그러나 작업 안에서 보여 지는 상호 속 텍스트들은 그렇지 않은 상황과 환경을 대변해 주고 있다. ● 이미지의 표현에 있어서도 두 가지 또는 세 가지 시점에서 바라본 같은 장소를 한 화면 안에 구성함으로써 작가에 의해 선택되어지는 여러 시점을 보여 준다.

화면 안에 레이어처럼 겹쳐지는 이미지들은 같은 장소를 다른 시점에서 바라본 시각의 또 다른 평면화이다. 직선, 딱딱함, 단조로움, 반복. ● 그림을 그리면서 나 자신이 좋아하는 성향들이다. 도시에서 느껴지는 획일적이고 고정된 이미지를 표현하는 것에 아직 질리지 않았다는 것-일상에서 부딪히는 모든 이미지들에서, 나아가서는 모든 것들과의 관계 속에서 느껴지는 감성의 반영이다. 고정된 투시와 직선적 이미지의 반복적 사용들은 그것을 극대화 시킨다. ■ 이여운

a Slice of City ● A theme which leads this exhibition is the imaging about spaces selected by certain needs. When an artist or someone who's seeking for the proper space such as a workroom or a home, they finally choose it upon their own needs. They work with realtors in order to find the best one for their various circumstances. Especially, those urbanites have relevant options among others about common circumstances, but they can never be free from their limits. They need more information when there are many comparable numbers of classes, and this phenomenon may be a stress according to today's system linked by networks. Seoul, which divided by districts, has common denominators in fixed situations and limitations. For example, it is like going out for finding offices, apartments or studios with the fixed deposit money and the monthly rent. In this case, there is an irony that personal status and limitation are more important than the district. ● Space means more like a place chosen only by needs - not an emotional meaning like a home. When there are clear purposes, it becomes more acute. ● Purposeful space called 'workroom' has another irony that demands various bourgeois terms such as wide room, wide hallway, high ceiling and huge door. ● This may never be found in some districts or buildings, which are old and structurally lag behind. But if we think over about this issue, some artists definitely need those bourgeois terms in order to produce different works from others. However, texts shown in a firm name are proving opposite situations and circumstances. So in expressing images, artists can show various points of view by organizing spaces in one screen. Image, overlapped like layers in one screen, is another complanation looking the same space in different point of view. ● Straight lines, hardness, monotonousness and repetition. Those inclinations are what I like the most when painting. They show that I'm not yet fed up to express standardized and fixed images from the city life. Also it's a reflection of emotions felt in all images from daily life and relations with every little things. Using fixed perspective and linear images repetitive maximizes it. ■ Lee Yuwoon
