함수연 회화전 : 연속된 풍경-SEQUENCE ● 유독 이야기가 들리는 그림이 있다. 가만가만 읊조리는 이야기. 그것은 바람에 몸을 맡긴 연둣빛 잎사귀들이 서로를 부딪치며 나누는 이야기이기도 하고, 우연히 마주친 사람들이 입술이 아닌 눈으로 건네는 이야기이기도 하며, 세상을 비치는 조그만 창문이 하얗게 단장한 캔버스를 향해 비밀스레 전하는 이야기이기도 하다. 작가 함수연은 자신의 주변에서 들려오는 그 이야기들을 우연처럼 맞이한 색을 빌어 화면에 펼쳐놓는다. ● 화면을 물들인 색은 고요하지만 차갑지 않은 정서를 자아낸다. 그것은 특별한 무언가를 지시하거나 연상시키기 위한 색은 아니다. 화면 속 형상들 또한 작가의 차분하고도 집요한 시선을 담고 있긴 하지만 감상적이거나 상징적인 형태로 나타나지 않는다. 작가는 드러내는 대신 그저 보여줄 뿐이다.

자신의 삶의 영역을 크게 벗어나지 않는 이미지들을 가장 간결하고 담담한 방식으로. 작가가 보여주는 연속된 풍경이란, 사실적인 풍경과 얼마나 닮았는가의 표면적인 방식을 넘어 한 사람의 고유한 시선을 밀도 있게 표현하는 재현의 문제로 귀결된다. ● 이번 전시에서 작가는 실내에서 내다보는 실외풍경에 관심을 기울이고 있다. 창가에 선 작가는 익숙한 일상의 풍경들을 관찰한다. 가깝지도 멀지도 않은 거리를 유지하며 특유의 낯선 시선으로. 생명력 넘치는 연둣빛 나뭇잎으로부터 시작된 시선은 나무들에 둘러싸여 어딘가를 망연히 응시하는 사람들에게로, 사람들이 잠시 길가에 세워둔 자동차로, 자동차 옆 반듯하게 솟은 건물로, 건물 앞을 산책하는 이웃의 얼굴로 그리고 종내 작가 자신에게로 향한다.

작가의 눈에 담긴 일상의 풍경들은 화면에 옮겨지며 어딘지 모르게 현실에서 부유하는 듯한 장면으로 연속된다. ● 바라건대, 작가의 그림 앞에 서면 우선은 모든 판단과 평가를 유보한 채 팔, 다리를 쭉 늘어뜨리고 깊은 심호흡을 한 번 해주길 바란다. 그리고 자신이 보고 있는 어떤 것이 나지막이 건네는 이야기에 가만히 귀 기울여주길. 어쩌면 그 작고도 사소한 시도로 오래 전 당신이 잃어버린 계절과 낮잠, 시와 나무 혹은 선물처럼 다가오는 무언가를 만나게 될지도 모르니. ■ 홍희정

There is a picture that tells us a story, which is just like chanting quietly. Sometimes it talks about those green leaves bumping each other against the wind or the people who are coincidently coming across with their eyes not with their lips, or it secretly tells us a little window that shows whole world toward the whitely decorated canvas. The artist, Sooyun Ham, discloses those stories around her surrounding with the colors as if she grasps by chance. ● The colors on the canvas are calm but evoke warm sentiment. These are for neither indicating some special purposes nor being reminiscent of something. The shapes in the canvas convey the artist's subdued and stubborn sight, but are not representing sentimental or symbolic forms either. Instead of exposing those shapes, she chooses a very simple and clear way to show the images which are not deviated from her life. The her landscape series is a conclusion of reproduction that expresses a person's unique view clearly over the surface. It's like how the picture is similar to the real scenery. ● In this exhibition the artist is concerned about the outdoor landscape from the inside. She observes the familiar daily scenery at the window with her peculiar and strange view by maintaining some distance. Her gaze at the vital green leaves shortly turns toward the people who stare at somewhere surrounded by trees, the cars just have been parked at the street, straightly risen building near the cars, the neighbor's face who is taking a walk in front of the building, and finally herself. The daily scene at her eyes is put on the canvas and continued as if it's drifting in the reality without anyone's knowing. ● If you are standing in front of her picture, I wish, please leave out all the judgement and valuation, and take a deep breath with dangling arms and legs. Then, listen to the something that you see talking to you in a low voice. Perhaps, you'll find out something with a little and trivial attempt like the season, nap, poem, tree or gift that you have forgotten for a long time. ■ Heejeong Hong
