"We tell ourselves stories in order to live"_Joan Didion ● The photographs in this exhibition comprise an on-going body of work made in Los Angeles and Seoul. They were created in an effort to negotiate the dissonance that occurs when existing between two disparate cultures. Frequently transplanted, destabilized, and disoriented, my identity as a Korean-American has in the past, meant never accepting one definition of myself to be true. As a result, I have developed into the role of an insider outsider, a kind of ethnographer of her given culture, an auto-ethnographer. My practice gives form to instincts that have shape my way of interpreting and interacting with the world around me. At once it is an examination and performance on the notions circulating around identity, subjectivity and place. They are a work of translation existing at the intersections between what is traditional and contemporary, documentary and fiction, Korean and not Korean, American and not American.

The photographs are not so much extracted tokens from an on-going moment but are documents of an on-going performance, a fabricated reality for the camera. Staged actions are stilled to render visible the invisible psychological process of creating subjectivity. Playful associations are enacted in intentional locations to demonstrate the affect Place has on subjectivity. Daily objects are examined for indexical vestiges (traces) the body leaves behind after interacting with Place. The gallery space, in turn, is adopted as the unifying plane for photographs made independently of one another. Much like the illusion of movement provided by still images running at 24 frames per second through a projector, it is my intention to project onto this gallery an illusory fragmented filmic space, with each photograph standing in as freeze-frames derived from a fragmented personal narrative.

The producers of meaning not only include the photographer, but the subject and the viewer as well. Each agent creates a mutable and shifting relationship to meaning by engaging in the process from his or her own singularity. It is my intention to instigate within each participant the awareness of looking and how the act of looking creates the stories we live by. ■ MICHELLE LEE

"We tell ourselves stories in order to live"_Joan Didion ● 전시에 올린 사진들은 로스엔젤레스 와 서울 사이에서 연계되어 만들어진 작품들로 구성되었다. 비교 될 수 없는 두 문화권 사이에서 존재하는 부조화성의 타협을 시도 해보기 위해 만들어진 작품들이다. 한국계 미국인으로써 과거 나의 정체성은 빈번히 이식되어지고 불안정감과 혼돈 속에 나 자신을 하나의 명료한 정의로 수긍 할 수 없었다. 그 결과로 나는 내부인 인 동시에 이방인 이었고 각각의 주어진 문화와 동시에 내 자신에 대한 관찰자적 시점을 가진 기록자로서의 역할을 가지게 되었다. 나의 이런 관습은 직감을 형태화 하였고 내 주의에 펼쳐진 세상을 해석하고 반응 하는 나만의 방식을 구체화 하였다. 곧 이것은 정체성, 주관성과 그 공백 주위를 맴도는 개념의 성찰과 실행 이였다. 그 작품들은 전통과 현대, 실록과 허구, 한국인 이면서 한국인 일수 없는, 미국인 이면서 미국인 일수 없는 교차점 사이에 존재함에 대한 해석이다.

사진들은 진행되는(on-going) 순간에서 추출된 유물이 아니라 계속 진행되는(on-going) 행위의 기록이며 카메라를 위해 제작된 현실인 것이다.연출된 행위들을 정지시켜 주관성 제조의 감추어진 심리적 과정을 표출 시켜보았다. 일상적 사물들이 장소와의 상호 작용 후 그 물체가 남긴 표시된 흔적들을 관찰한다.각각 개별적으로 만들어진 사진들이 합성되는 공간으로 전시공간을 번갈아 재현해본다.일 초에 24장의 정지된 이미지들이 프로젝터를 통해 움직이는 환상으로 보이듯 각각의 사진들이 정지된 화면들처럼 조각난 개개인의 이야기를 부서진 파편 같은 영상의 영역으로 전시공간에 투영해 보려는 의도이다.

사진작가 뿐 아니라 주제와 관찰자 또한 의미의 제작자 이다. 각 에이전트는 이 과정에 참여하여 각자 자신들의 특이한 점으로 인하여 개별적이고 이견 적 의미를 만들어낸다. 각 참여자간 보는 행위에서 우리들이 살아가는 이야기들이 어떻게 만들어지는지의 의식된 시선을 유발시키는 것이 나의 의도이다. ■ MICHELLE LEE
