불건전 진화론 Freaky Evolution

살아있는 모든 것은 진화한다. 진화의 흐름 속에 불필요한 구성요소는 퇴화과정을 거쳐 사라지며 생존에 필요한 형식만을 갖추며 진화를 거듭해 나간다. 인류는 진화와 더불어 신의 영역에 도전했으며 유전자 조작을 비롯한 무수한 실험들이 과학의 미명하에, 나아가 인류의 윤택한 삶을 위한 명목으로 자행되어 왔다.

문제의 어긋남 즉, 불건전한 진화는 여기에서 시작한다. 문명의 발달은 인간에게 조화가 아닌 조합을 꿈꾸게 하였고 과학의 발전은 유전자 조작을 통한 배아 복재로 조합의 꿈을 실현케 하였다. 그리고 현재, 그 조합의 부작용이 드러나기 시작했다.

신품종의 개발과 수리 시설의 확장, 그리고 화학비료의 사용을 포함하는 녹색혁명은 30여년을 채우지 못하고 환경오염이라는 부작용을 드러냈다. 그리고 제2의 녹색혁명이라 불리는 '유전자 조작 농산물(GMO)'은 생산량의 측면에서는 기립박수를 보내야 하겠지만 질적인 측면에서 본다면 유전자 조작 생산물을 섭취한 동ㆍ식물에게 종족 번식의 불능 이라는 치명적인 유전자 결함을 야기 시켰다. 또한 최근의 상황을 거론한다면 공업용 화합물질인 멜라민이 포한된 동물사료로 인해 약 5000마리 이상의 개와 고양이들이 신장질환으로 죽었으며 분유에 포함된, 일명 멜라민 분유로 인하여 어린아이들의 생명을 직접적으로 위협했다. 이 부작용이 일시적이며 소수의 특정한 종에 한정된 현상이라 누가 단정 지을 수 있겠는가? 나의 작업은 불협화음의 결과를 드러내는 것이 아니다.

불협화음 그 자체를 보여주고자 함이다. 우리 시대의 특정한 불협화음, 불건전한 진화. 인형의 몸에 동물의 일부분이 함께하는 구성은 조화롭지도 유쾌하지도 않다. 나의 작업은 인형 같으면서도 인형이 아니고 동물 같으면서도 동물이 아니다. 살아 있는 자체의 진화에 침강한 과학과 문명의 결과물인 이중적 존재 즉, 잡종이다. 나는 인류가 '진화의 삐그덕 거리는 소리'를 듣길 바란다. ■ 장호현

All the living things evolve. The living creatures eliminate their unnecessary components through degeneration process in the flow of the evolution, leaving them only the form essential to survival, repeating the evolution process again and again. ● Together with the evolution, mankind has challenged to the domain of Heaven, and various experiments including the genetic engineering have been perpetrated under the name of science, and furthermore on the pretext of development for abundant human life. ● The problem of something's going wrong, in other words, the freak evolution begins right here. The advance of human civilization empowers mankind to dream of the combination rather than the harmony, and the development of science enables humankind to realize the dream of the combination with embryo reproduction through the genetic modification. Now the ugly side effects of the combination have come to a head. ● The much praised green revolution including development of new species, expansion of irrigation system and use of chemical fertilizer has not last even 30 years before it exposes the side effects of the environmental pollution. ● And the genetically modified organisms, which are called 2nd shall be praised much with a standing ovation, in terms of the production quantity, but it has resulted in the lethal genetic defects, making the creatures taking in the GMO products impossible to reproduce their offspring from the viewpoint of the quality. ● Besides, speaking of the recent ongoing incidents, approximate 5000 heads of cats and dogs have died of the kidney diseases, due to the animal feed contaminated with melamine, the toxic industrial chemical agent, and the dry milk power tainted with the melamine has directly threatened the lives of many babies in China as they are fed with it. ● Who dares to conclude such side effects might be the temporary phenomena, limited only to a few species? ● My creations are not aimed to show the consequence of the disharmony but expose the disharmony itself. ● The specific disharmony of our contemporary times and freaky evolution are the main themes for my creations. The formation with animal part attached to a doll is neither harmonious nor pleasant. My creation looks like a doll, but it is no doll, and it resembles an animal, but it is never the animal. It is a hybrid, the dual entity, which is the result of the science and civilization, immersed in the evolution of the living creature itself. I hope mankind can listen to the disharmonious warning sounds of the evolution. ■ JANGHOHYUN
