New Baby Born ● 상상의 세계 안에 존재하는 상상적 존재인 인어 베이비들은 새로운 탄생을 맞이하게 된다. 그들은 세상에 한 개체로서 탄생을 맞이하며, 자신 스스로 독립적인 존재로 인식하길 원하지만 그들은 생존을 위해 절대적으로 의존을 하는 시기를 거쳐야만 한다. 그들의 부모로 부터의 완벽한 독립을 이루기 위해 '흐릿하게 바라보기'를 시작하게 된다. 전시장에 인어 베이비들은 물속을 헤엄치듯 설치 되어있다. 이들은 전시장 중앙에 설치되며, 전시장 벽면에는 실재사람 사이즈의 성인 인어가 설치되어 있다. 성인 인어는 누군가에게 잊혀 가는 존재로 표현되었다.

인어 베이비들은 아직 자신을 인식하는 기능이 취약하기 때문에 그들이 지각하는 성인 인어(엄마)의 좋은 측면과 나쁜 측면 그리고 이러한 측면과 연관된 상충되는 정서를 동시에 받아들이지 못한다. 인어 베이비는 그 받아들일 수 없는 측면들을 배제하고 자신들이 받아들일 수밖에 없는 측면들만 받아들이고자 자신들의 의식 분열을 진행시킨다. 즉, 인어 베이비는 대상이나 자신의 갈등적인 혹은 이질적인 측면들, 즉 서로 다른 정서가 부여된 측면들을 양분하여 한 번에 어느 한 측면만을 의식적인 차원에서 경험하고 다른 측면은 의식에서 배제하고자 하는 것이다.

분열의 결과 성인 인어(엄마)라는 대상은 인어 베이비의 의식세계에서 아직 온전한 대상(whole object)이 아니라 부분대상(part object)으로 지각되고 경험된다. 부분적인 엄마의 모습만을 받아들인 인어 베이비는 엄마의 좋은 점을 의식으로부터 배제하고 엄마의 온전한 나쁜 것들을 엄마의 모든 것인 것처럼 받아들이게 된다. 그리고 그들은 엄마의 그 형상(모습)을 받아들일 수 없게 되고 그 모습을 자신들의 눈앞에서 멀어지게 만들려고 노력하게 된다. 잊혀져가는 존재인 공룡은 지극히 개인적인 자기 기만의 세계에서 창출된 아득한 그리움을 담고 있다. 누구의 보호가 없이는 살아날 수 없는 상황 속에서 인어 베이비들은 본능적인 그리움의 근거를 쫓아 가야하는 여정에 놓이게 된다. 인어 베이비들은 성인 인어에게 끊임없이 벗어나려고 하지만 또한 끊임없이 의존하려는 모순된 점을 가지고 있다. 꿈을 꾸며 살아가는 인어 베이비들은 그들의 꿈을 의미하는 다리를 가지지 못한 체 태어났다. 이것이 이들의 큰 약점으로 존재하겠지만 그들은 꿈을 이루어 나가려 한다. 본인은 이 전시를 통해 의존적인 존재에 대한 인식의 변화와 스스로 자기기만의 세계에서 벗어나길 시도한다. ■ 다니엘 경

The mermaid babies are newly born in an imaginary world. They come out in the world as an independent entity, and want to be acknowledged as an independent entity, but for survival they must pass a time where they are dependent upon others. To become independent from their parents they start to 'vaguely see'. The mermaid babies that are showcases are designed as if they are swimming. They are displayed in the center of the gallery, and on the wall is a life size adult mermaid. The adult mermaid is expressed as one being forgotten by others. Since the baby mermaid are still fragile and without self-awareness, they are unable to see both the good and the bad side of their mother 'the adult mermaid' and accept these emotions. ● The mermaid baby denies all aspects that it does not agree with, and accept only what it wants as it disintegrates its conscience. The result of the disintegration shows that the adult mermaid is yet to be a whole object, but rather a partial object in the mermaid babies' conscience and experience. The mermaid baby with only partial intake of the mother, excludes the good side of the mother and only accepts the negative side and believes that is the only aspect of the mother. Therefore, they deny the image of the mother and try to erase it from their mind. ■ Daniel Kyong
