존재의 신비를 응시하는 따듯하고 환상적인 회화세계 ● 정향의 그림에는 그의 영혼이 발산하는 독특한 울림이 있다. 주위를 환하게 하고 따듯하게 감싸 안으면서 생각에 잠기게 하는 정신의 에너지가 작품에서 느껴지는 것이다. 그의 화실을 방문 했을 때, 나는 실내의 그림들이 발산하는 밝고 따듯하고 환상적인 분위기에 싸여 절로 기쁨을 느꼈다. 사람의 마음을 행복하게 만드는 그림은 그것만으로도 가치 있는 그림임이 분명하다. 그의 그림은 환상적인 색채의 조화와 교묘한 형태 구성으로 우리의 감성에 호소한다. 그가 작품에 구사하는 색채들은 원색에 가까우면서도 강렬한 긴장감을 주지 않고 우아하고 따듯하고 평화로운 정조(情調)를 지니고 있다. 그리고 이러한 색채들은 추상(抽象)과 구상(具象)의 경계를 허무는 불가사의(不可思議)한 선(線)과 면(面)의 교묘한 구성(構成)과 결합하여 작품에 독특한 신비감(神秘感)을 부여한다.

정향의 그림에 그어나간 선(線)들은 가시적(可視的) 세계를 보여주기 위한 선(線)이 아니다. 그의 선(線)들은 상식적이고 일상적(日常的)인 세계를 설명하기 위한 선(線)이 아니라, 일상적인 차원을 초월한 그 이상의 세계를 열어 보이기 위한 선(線)이다. 정향은 화면에 선(線)을 그어 나가면서 마치 아무도 가보지 않은 미지(未知)의 세계를 여행하는 기분으로 조심스레 선을 긋는다. 그리고 그렇게 그어 나간 선(線)에 의해 형성되는 독특한 이미지들을 주의 깊게 응시 하면서 세계의 신비(神秘)를 열어 보이는 것이다. 사람들은 그들의 눈에 의해 보여진 세계만을, 이 일상적인 가시적 세계만을 세계의 전부라고 생각하며 살아가고 있다. 땅과 하늘과 우주의 수많은 사물들의 모습은 우리의 인식의 한계 속에 포착된 세계의 모습일 뿐인데 말이다. 우리가 보고 이해하고 있는 것은 이 무한한 세계의 지극히 작은 일부분에 불과할 뿐이다. 철학자 하이데거(M. Heidegger)의 말처럼 "세계는 은폐되어 있는 것이다."

화가 정향은 우리가 보고 있는 이 세계가 사실은 무한한 세계의 일부에 불과하다는 것을 이해하고 있는 사람이다. 그는 우리를 둘러싸고 있는 존재 세계(存在 世界)가 우리의 일상적 지각(日常的 知覺)의 차원을 넘어선 불가사의(不可思議)한 세계라고 하는 것을 이해하고 있는 것이다. 그리하여 그는 불가사의한 세계의 신비를 드러내는 것이 예술의 궁극 목적이라고 생각한다. 그에 의하면 불가사의는 우리를 끝없는 사유(思惟)와 꿈의 세계로 인도하는 '아름다움' 그 자체이기 때문이다. 현대인들은 자연의 사물들이 지닌 그 풍부한 존재의 울림으로부터 차단 당한 채 살아가고 있다. 자연(自然)의 무한성(無限性)으로부터 소외(疏外) 되어 있는 것이다. 그로인해 자연은 인간의 마음 속에서 차갑게 물질화(物質化) 되어 버리고 말았다. 자연의 사물들이, 존재가 우리의 눈에서 차갑게 물질화 되어 버리고 말았다는 것, 여기에 현대 문명이 지닌 비극이 있다. 메마른 존재의 숲은 결국 인간 자신도 차가운 물질로 전락시킬 것이기 때문이다. "저기 나무 한그루가 있다. 불가사의한 우주적(宇宙的) 생명의 숨결이 진동하고 있는 나무가 있는 것이다." 존재의 진실을 꿰뚫어 보고 있는 사람은 이렇게 말해야 한다. 그러나 현대인들은 그렇게 볼 수 있는 영혼의 눈을 잃어 버린지 오래이다. 화가 정향은 그의 작품을 통해 우리를 둘러싸고 있는 존재세계(存在世界)의 신비(神秘)를 열어 보임으로써, 현대라고 하는 이 메마른 존재의 숲에 아름다운 영혼의 샘물을 흐르게 하고 있는 것이다. 그리하여 그의 그림은 인간을 세계의 아름다운 무한성과 하나가 되게 하는 소중한 시각의 암호가 되고 있다. ■ 임두빈

Jeong Hyang's Affectionate, Fantastical Art Gazing at the Mystery of Being ● By Im Doo-bin, Art Critic & Dankook University Professor Jeong Hyang's painting has a distinctive resonance of her soul. It radiates her spiritual energies that brighten her surroundings, embrace things warmheartedly, and has viewers be indulged in thought. When I visited her studio, her work's bright, affectionate, fantastic atmosphere gave me great pleasure. It is clear a picture that makes people feel happiness is invaluable. Jeong's paintings in fantastic color harmony and subtle form appeal to our sensibility. The palette employed in these pictures are close to primary colors, but feels refined, warm, and peaceful without evoking any tension. These hues, in accord with the ingenious composition of lines and planes, blur the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, lending a unique sense of mystery to her work. The lines Jeong draws are not for depicting the visible. Her lines are not to account for a common, daily world but to open up a transcendental one. As if traveling an unexplored world, she draws lines very carefully. Gazing at the unique images shaped by these lines, she opens up the world of mysteries. People tend to think what they see is the whole of the world. All things we see in the universe are captured merely within the limitation of our perception. As Martin Heidegger alluded, what we view and understand is extremely small part of the entire world. "The world is concealed." Jeong Hyang is aware that the world we perceive is only part of the infinite world. She understands the world surrounding us is mysterious and goes beyond the limitation of our daily perception. She thinks the ultimate goal of art is to unveil these mysteries. This is because the mysteries are beauty itself that leads us to the world of endless thought and dream. Contemporary humans exist, alienated from nature's abundant resonance and infiniteness. Nature is thus materialized in the human's mind. This heartless materialization of natural things and beings causes the tragedy of modern civilization. If our spirit and existence is in a barren, desolate state, we will degenerate into cold-hearted matter. As ones who see through the truth of being, we have to say "There is a tree over there. The tree is wrapped with a mysterious cosmic atmosphere and life." Long ago, however, we lost the eyes to see like that. By opening up the world of mysteries around us through her work, painter Jeong Hyang enables spring water of our soul flow in this sterile contemporary world.
