쌈지스페이스는 2007년 11월 24일(토) 쌈지스페이스 특별기획 국제강연회 "이동과 변화: 세계 속 한국미술"을 개최합니다. ● "이동과 변화: 세계 속 한국미술"은 한국의 작가 및 미술관계자들을 위한 강연 프로그램으로서, 세계현대미술의 흐름 안에서 한국현대미술의 위치를 가늠하고, 사회적, 문화적, 미술사적 맥락 안에서 한국미술의 발전과정을 파악할 수 있도록 기획되었습니다. 세계와 한국의 현대미술을 역사적, 동시대적 맥락이라는 각각 두 가지 축에서 고찰하며, 특히 한국의 신진작가들의 작품활동에 도움이 되는 이론적 바탕을 제공하고자 합니다. 더 나은 파급효과를 위해 동시통역이 준비되며 행사 후 자료집이 발간될 예정입니다.

● 강연 소개 강연1. 90년대 이후의 한국미술: 비즈니스 모델의 도입인가 패러다임의 변화인가 - 정헌이(미술비평가, 한성대학교 교수) 90년대 이후 한국 사회의 변화 속에서 미술적 실천의 양상이 어떻게 전개되었는지 살펴본다. 90년대 이후 미술계가 급격한 양적 팽창을 하는 가운데 젊은 작가들의 활동 영역이나 조건이 상대적으로 이전에 비해 한결 좋아진 것이 사실이다. 그런데 최근의 이러한 변화가 진정 우리 미술계의 한 차원 높은 단계로의 도약을 의미하는지, 아니면 예술이 최종적으로 비즈니스 모델 속으로 포섭되어가는 과정인지에 대해 중점적으로 논의할 필요가 있다. 이 발표는 90년대 이후의 한국미술의 전개를 반성적으로 되돌아보고 당장 우리가 해결해야 할 몇가지 과제들을 제안할 것이다.

강연2. 효과적인 실험들, 쇠퇴하는 모델들 - 바시프 코르툰 (Platform Garanti 디렉터, 2005년 이스탄불 비엔날레 총감독) 본 강연은 90년대 초부터 10여 년 동안 있었던 비엔날레들이 표방한 기본 개념을 살펴봄으로써 전형과 실험이라는 상반되는 관점에서 비엔날레의 개관을 제공한다. 특히 비엔날레들이 비평적 영역과 근본적 잠재성을 어떻게 적용하는가에 초점을 맞추고자 한다. 신자유주의 경제와 도시화의 시기에 비엔날레가 어떻게 충돌을 만들어내고 있는가? 이에 반대하는 것은 거세되고 흡수되거나, 아니면 만들어지는가? 상상을 풀어내는 방법에 있어서 제12회 도큐멘타와 제10회 이스탄불 비엔날레의 중대한 차이들은 무엇인가를 묻는다.

강연3. 맥락과 이슈 - 한국현대미술의 열려진 출구를 위한 질문들 - 성완경 (미술비평가, 인하대학교 교수) 본 강연은 세계현대미술과 동시대적 호흡을 하는 미술인들이 가진 양면적인 즉, 익숙한 것이면서 또 뭔가 좀 거북한 고민인 세계주류미술 무대로의 진입이 우리 현대미술 발전의 주요 의제인가라는 문제를 다룬다. 모든 것이 다 미술이 될 수 있는 시대, 그리고 세계화주의 못지 않게 지역주의 맥락이 새롭게 중시되는 시대에 세계미술과 한국미술 사이의 관계를 어떤 답안처럼 제시할 수 있을까. 그리고 과연 그것이 시장적 차원을 넘어 가치론적인 차원에까지 이르는 생산적 토론의 주제가 될 수 있을까라는 질문을 시작으로 '맥락'과 '이슈'라는 개념을 재음미하여 지금의 국내외적 미술 상황의 모호성과 그 피로감을 넘어서기 위한 최소한의 성찰적 시도한다. 이는 현란한 비평 수사학과 상품화의 쓰나미에 쓸려나가지 않고 자기 정체성을 보존하는 중요한 생태학적 선택을 위한 모색이기도 하다.

강연4. 요들링에서 양자물리학까지 (현대미술과 범주) - 마크 올리비에 와흘러 (팔레 드 도쿄 디렉터) 와흘러는 예술이 가진 어느 특정한 공간이나 시간에 고정되어있지 않은 성격을 염두에 두면서 예술을 바라볼 때 뚫려진 창문을 보는 것과 같은 단면을 잡아낼 수 있을까라는 질문을 시작한다. 그는 미술 프로그래밍, 다층적 해석에 기반한 시나리오, 지적이고 미학적인 범주의 해체, 예술과 우리의 현실 사이의 연결점들에 대한 지속적인 질문과 같은 가늠자 역할을 할 수 있는 4가지 기제들을 소개하면서 이들의 통합을 시도한다.

Shift and Change: Locating Korean Art Now , first in a serious of lecture for Korean artists and art professionals, aims to locate Korean contemporary art in the international art scene and to comprehend the development of Korean art in the social, cultural and art historical context. Lecture 1. Korean Art from 1990s: Introduction of Business Model or Change of Paradigm - Hunyee Jung This lecture explores how the artistic practices have been developed within the frame of Koreas societal change since the 90s. It is true that the condition of young artists has improved as the size of art field rapidly expanded. However, such changes call for the assessment whether it indicates that Korea art field is leaping to higher level or it just reflects the transition process of the arts absorbed into business model. This lecture will look back the development of Korean art since the 90s and raise couple of issues that need immediate attention.

Lecture 2. Working Experiments, Failing Models - Vasif Kortun This conversation will survey the basic tenets and provide an overview of the biennial decade from the early 90s on from a perspective of model versus the experiment. It will in particular focus upon the biennials' appropriation of the critical spheres and radical potentiality. How do biennials perform friction during the times of neoliberal economy and urban makeover? Is dissent neutered and absorbed or generated? What are the critical differences between Documenta XII and the 10th. Istanbul Biennial in the way they have unleashed the imaginary.

Lecture 3. Issues and Context Questions for Korean Contemporary Arts open gateway - Wan-kyung Sung The lecture deals Korean contemporary art practitioners ambivalent issue whether entering international art arena can be the main requisite for the development of Korean art. He asks whether we can make define a relation between international art and Korean art in the age in which anything goes in the name of art, and when local context is equally emphasized to globalization. He raises another question whether such relation can be the topic for the constructive discussion that touches beyond the market level and reaches the axiological level. He re-examines the concept of context and issue in order to make a minimum self-reflective attempt to overcome the ambiguity and fatigue situation of the local and international art. It also seeks for an important ecological choice to preserve the identity without being washed away by the glamour of critical rhetoric and commercialization.

Lecture 4. From Yodeling to Quantum Physics (Contemporary art and categories) Marc-Olivier Wahler Wahler raises question on how to get shot of the "window vision" of art, which regards exhibitions and works as fixed points in time and space. He attempts how to integrate the notion of a programming conceived of as a cursor, and set in a scenario based on the multiplication of interpretations, the decompartmentalization of intellectual and aesthetic categories and the constant questioning of the bridges between art and our reality.
