Light and Structure

이 전시는 우리의 주변과 그 주변이 우리에게 주는 영향을 보여주기 위한 나의 표현의 산물이다. 이 전시 안에서, 보이는 주변의 것들이란 바로 내 밖에 존재하는 형태적인 외형이다. 나는 이런 outside 세상 속에서 우리에게 행하여지는 반작용적인 요소들이 다시 우리에게 미치는 영향을 탐구 하고, 이 전시를 통해 그것들이 보이길 바라며 이 작업을 진행했다. 이러한 과정에서 내가 얻은 이번 전시의 시각적 소재 두 가지는 바로 Light and Structure 이다.

Light (빛) 은 outside 세상 속에서의 중요한 요소임에는 틀림없다. 물리학적인 의미에서 light (빛) 이 세상의 색을 만드는 것이며, 정확히 어떤 효과를 내는지는 알지는 못하지만 우리의 감정적 상태에 영향을 주는 것 또한 사실이다. 이번 전시에 표현된 나의 모든 이미지는 이른 아침과 늦은 저녁에 촬영 되어 진 작품이다. 이 시간은 Light (빛) 의 감정적 의도를 표현 하는 데에 있어서 대단히 중요한 때이다. 이른 아침의 light (빛) 은 우리를 명료하고 강한 감정적 위치에 놓이게 하고, 저녁의 light (빛) 은 그 풍부한 황금색 물결로 인해 슬프고도 고요한 감정적 동요를 낳기 때문이다.

Structure (구조) 는 형태적인 측면에서 감정적 동요를 제공한다. 만약 좋은 light (빛) 으로 색감적 측면에서 효과적인 감정적 표현을 했다 하더라도, 형태적인 면에서 그 빛을 뒷받침 해주지 않는 다면 그 빛은 그저 낭비 되어 버린 쓰레기에 지나지 않다. Stephen Shore의 현란한 이미지들은 light (빛) 과 Structure (구조) 의 - Stephen Shore의 image 속에 등장하는 건물들 - 완벽한 조화 속에서 그 현란함을 더하고, 완성되어진다. 또한 William Eggleston의 작업 속에서 강하고 풍부한 색, 즉 빛이 만들어내는 효과에 의해 이미지 중앙에 위치한 세발자전거의 시각적 품위와 강한 호소력을 가지게 된다. 이러한 의미에서 light (빛) 과 structure (구조) 는 내 작업의 내용과 형태를 담는 가장 좋은 소재가 된다. 이들의 아름다움은 바로 나에게서 나의 외적인 세계에 대한 아름다움을 끌어내고 있다. 나의 모든 이미지는 이러한 강력한 빛의 능력을 가진 색들이 존재하며, 이 색은 나의 사진들을 강력하고 아름답게 만드는 가장 효과적인 힘이 된다.

The aim of this exhibition is to highlight the ways that we react to our surroundings and the effect that those surroundings have on us. The surroundings that I have chosen to explore are external. I want to explore what influences our reactions to the outside world. There are two main factors in this respect: light and structure. Light is by far the most important element of the external world. It (literally) colors this world and, thus, affects our emotional state to a degree that is hard to fully comprehend. All of these images were taken either early in the morning or in the late afternoon. During these times, light is at its most (emotionally) intense. Morning light allows us a clarity and strength that makes up for whatever doubts we may be feeling about our reasons for rising so early. Afternoon light, in its rich orange glow, evokes a strange sense of sadness and serenity. Structure provides these emotional responses with form. The quality of light may be beautiful, but if the structure photographed does not match that beauty, the light is wasted. The deceptive beauty of Stephen Shore's images lie in the fact that light matches form so well. Buildings are granted beauty through their relationship to light. A similar thing can be said about William Eggleston. A tricycle placed in the center of the frame gains a certain dignity and eloquence when coupled with rich, strong light. Thus, light and structure represent the content and form of my images. Their beauty allows me to express the beauty of the external world. These images are all in color, for so much of light's strengthresides in its color. And it is this strength that makes all photos great. ■ Noah McLaurine
