빗각角서敍사事 _ Serendipitous Tangents

갤러리 팩토리의 2007년 가을을 여는 첫 전시는 뉴욕과 LA에서 활동하는 9명의 아티스트로 구성된 그룹전, 빗각角서敍사事 _ Serendipitous Tangents 이다. 빗각서사展은 일상의 순간들 - 개인의 서사와 기억 - 에 바탕을 둔 작업으로 구성되어 있다. 복고풍의 다소 변형된 팝컬쳐 속의 이미지와 지루하리만큼 일상적인 이미지들을 살짝 비틀어 보여주는 이 작품들은 놀랍게도 감동적인, 또는 초현실적이기도 한 이야기를 제공한다.

오래된 장난감, 키치한 장식품, 만화 속 캐릭터, 스타워즈 속의 캐릭터, 구름, 산, 나무, 가죽벨트, 목각 펭귄, 생선장수, 부서진 나뭇가지 등 이들의 작품 속 모든 이미지들은 또 다른 상상을 위한 출발점이 되어 우연히 만나게 되는 소소한 즐거움과 웃음의 세계로 우리를 이끈다. ● 일상에 대한 집요한 분석과 창조적인 상상이 만들어낸 빗각서사의 작품들은 감성과 지성이 복합된 복잡미묘한 순간들의 표현이기도 하다. ● 작품들은 목판화, 사진, 비디오, 조각, 드로잉 등의 형태로 전시되며, 이들은 예측하지 못한 주인공들의 절정, 결말로 이루어진 이야기들을 통해서 마이크로코즘(소우주)와 매크로코즘(대우주)를 동시에 제시하고 있다.

Serendipitous Tangent ● Gallery FACTORY is pleased to present Serendipitous Tangents, a group e×hibition featuring nine artists based in New York and Los Angeles. The show will feature Chris Caccamise, Mike Houston & Martin Mazzora, Jennifer & Kevin McCoy, Liliana Porter, Yuken Teruya, Jennifer Viola, and Megan Whitmarsh (who will be showing their works in Seoul for the first time). The selected works represent a collection of artwork that recycle or morph simple everyday moments and pop-culture or ironically tweak banal images to present delightful and surprising narratives that are at times quite moving and surreal. ● Childhood toys, kitschy decorations, cartoons, Star Wars movies, clouds, mountains, trees, a leather belt, a wooden penguin, a fish monger, a broken branch all become points of departure for imaginative tangents that create seemingly serendipitous worlds that elicit joy, compassion, and laughter. ● All the artist share an element of surprise whether it is an outrage juxtaposition of a fat belly with praying hands tattooed next to it's "happy trail" that doubles as a bank and an ashtray (Jennifer Viola) or the simple amazement of finding an extraordinarily sublime landscape created inside a crumpled brown paper bag that looks like it needs to be tossed away with the garbage (Yuken Teruya). A surveillance camera is used in another piece to create what seems to be a scene from an old sci-fi movie (Jennifer and Kevin McCoy) and the delicate medium of printmaking is used to create an imposing 8 x 13 feet (2.5 x 4 meter) woodcut print (Mike Houston & Martin Mazzora). The artists share a fascination with the tactile and the absurd creating idiosyncratic worlds with masterful simplicity and humor. ● The intense investigation of the ordinary along with the inventive and imaginative tangents creates serendipitous narratives that are full of intellectual and emotional complexity. The show will include a wide range of mediums from drawing, embroidery, woodcut print, photography, film, ceramics, paper sculptures, to electronic mixed media.
