His paintings appear to have the world of artificial beauty situated within a clearly demarcated vertical and horizontal frame and to obstruct the barriers floating over the world with supernatural, set-free patterns. The two worlds are not completely broken off, rather they are connected among the round floating membranes. What do the ceaselessly moving horses in the two worlds mean? The horses might represent the self of the painter, Dong-Jin Park, and more broadly the self of us which does not settle anywhere, endlessly floating over the real world and the supernatural world, sometimes holding clear images, but momentarily staying in one spot like ceaselessly sliding Derrida's symbols. Like a picture book consisting of scenes each of which represents an epic, Park's paintings represent a trying journey of life, conscience, and image that leads to a pathway to the self.

그의 작품은 가로와 세로로 명확하게 구획된 화폭의 프레임 속에 인위적인 아름다움의 세계와 초월적인 무정형의 세계를 부유하는 차단막들이 가로막고 있는 형국이다. 그럼에도 이 두 세계는 명료하게 단절되어 있지 않으며, 그 떠다니는 원통의 부유막들 사이로 연결되어 있는 것이다. 그렇다면 그렇게 겹으로 존재하는 세계 속에서 끝없이 움직이는 말은? 박동진이란 화가 자신의 자아, 더욱 확장한다면 바로 우리들 자신의 자아는 아닐까. 어디에도 닻을 내리지 못한 채, 현실적 세계와 초월적 세계를 끝없이 떠도는. 하여 때로는 선명한 이미지를 붙잡기도 하나, 그조차 끊임없이 미끄러지는 데리다의 기호들처럼, 잠시 어느 한 지점에 머무를 수 있을 따름인. 그렇다면 박동진의 그림들은 마치 낱낱의 장면들이 모여 하나의 서사를 이루는 그림책이 그러하듯, 한 존재의 길 찾기를 보여주는, 삶의, 인식의, 이미지의 거칠고 고된 역정이 아닐까. ■ 김상욱
