Nothing, but Dots

지금 이 순간 우리는 생활 곳곳에서 광고와 같은 자극적인 이미지를 받아들이며 살고 있다. 생활의 일부분이 된 텔레비전이나 컴퓨터 모니터, 핸드폰의 LCD화면 속의 삶의 모습은 정사각형의 픽셀로 전환되어 전 세계로 퍼져나가고, 현실의 풍경을 뒤덮고 있는 인쇄물들의 이미지는 미세한 망점들의 조합으로 이루어져있다. 우리는 이러한 기계화된 이미지를 통해 현실을 받아들이고, 다시 기계화된 이미지를 통해 자신의 삶을 표현한다. 이런 기계언어로 전환된 이미지들은 대부분 자극적이고, 순간적이며, 흥미위주의 내용들로 가득하다. 본인의 작품에 등장하는 인물들은 스토리가 없는 평면 작품에서 가장 자극적인 소재로 선택되어 극대화된 기계언어로 재현되었다.

그러나 우리들의 실재 삶은 오래전부터 기계화된 언어가 아닌 자연의 언어로 소통하고 있었다. 여기서 자연의 언어란 태초에 인간의 언어가 생겨나기 전의 언어를 말한다. 오늘날에는 사람과 사람이 맞잡은 손이나 눈빛으로 대화하는 것과, 숲속이나 바다와 같은 대자연 속에서 홀로 느끼는 감정들, 정든 동물들과 나누는 대화들을 예로들 수 있다. 나의 작품 속에서 밑바탕이 되는 회화적 이미지는 자연의 언어를 의미하며, 인간의 구체적 형상을 결정하는 망점들은 기계화된 언어를 의미한다. 기계 언어로 표현된 이미지 이면에는 자연스런 인상을 지닌 자연의 언어가 존재한다. 기계 언어에 의해 가려진 자연의 언어의 소중함을 나의 작품은 말하고 있다. 나의 작품을 통해 현대인들의 삶이 기계화된 가상의 이미지에서 벗어나 현실의 실존을 느끼며 자연의 언어로 소통하기를 나는 희망한다. ■ 이훈규

Nowadays, we are constantly exposed to provocative images, like the ones in advertisements. We have become accustomed to eye-catching images, which might be regarded as a form of ocular pollution.?Television, computer, and mobile phone screens are firmly established as part of our sensorium; the images these disseminate, which consist of tiny half-tone dots, form a simulacre that has displaced reality.

We accept as authentic a machine-generated version of reality and represent our lives through mechanically formulated images. For most of history, we have communicated using the language of nature not the machine-formulated language that we have employed in recent times. In my pictures, the primary sketch represents the language of nature and the pixels that overlay it symbolize the artificial, mechanical forms of communication that are today mistaken for the real. With my art, I hope to help people distance themselves from the mechanically-generated simulacre that dominate modern life and find some way of embracing what is truly real. ■ Lee hun-kyu
