복숭아 꽃, 살구 꽃 CHANGWON 2007 ASIA ART FESTIVAL Peach flowers, Apricot Flowers ● 도청소재지 이전과 신도시 건설은 단순히 도시팽창에 따른 행정구역의 재편만을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 거기에는 농업사회의 정주민 문화에서 현대산업사회의 유목민적 삶의 문화로 변화됨을 내포하기도 한다. 또한 한국이 많은 대가를 치루기는 했지만 산업화를 성공적으로 이루었음을 의미하고 있다. 그러나 현대도시인의 삶은 스스로 자신의 정체성을 규정하기 어렵게 한다. 태어나 자란 곳과 학교교육을 받은 곳, 직장을 가지는 곳, 생활을 하는 곳이 과거와 달리 오랫동안 일정한 곳에 머무를 수 없게 하기 때문이다. 자신의 고향이 좋다고 해서 그 곳에만 살 수 없게 된 셈이다.

『복숭아꽃, 살구꽃』전시를 통해 계획된 도시로 태어난 창원의 모습을 다시 본다. 이것은 창원의 문제뿐만이 아니라 오늘날 모든 삶의 터전과 그곳에 사는 사람들에게 삶의 공간과 관련해서 동일하게 적용되는 문제 일 수 있다. 결론부터 말하자면, 왜 우리는 오늘날 우리가 살고 있는 곳을 다시 보아야하는가에 대한 대답은 자명하다. 급속한 도시화로 인한 물질적 조건과 문화적 정체성의 간극에서 벌어지는 갈등을 해소하기 위함이다. 무채색의 아스팔트 도로가 강제하는 속도처럼, 1년에 300여개의 공장이 들어서는 이 놀라운 산업전진기지의 신흥도시가 우리에게 삶의 행복지수를 그 만큼 보장해주지는 않기 때문이다. 우리가 고향을 그리워하는 것도 그런 이유일 것이다. 도시 공간은 그 사회의 수많은 기호를 생산하고 또 유통시킨다. 우리가 미처 인식하지 못하더라도 도시의 공간 곳곳은 자신을 표현하고 있으며 우리에게 그것을 내재화시키고 있듯이 말이다. 하지만 어떤 대안의 발전 모델이 어떻게 가능한지도 여전히 명확하게 제시하지 못하고 있는 것이 또한 현실이다. 도시화의 진전은 그렇게 하나의 연속선상에 존재하지 않기 때문일 것이다. 이렇게 오늘의 도시는 새로운 문제들에 직면해 있다.

창원에는 타지에서 온 많은 노동자들이 살고 있다. (심심찮게 외국인 이주노동자들도 주말이면 그 모습이 시내 거리에서 보인다.) 그들에게도 고향이 있으며 고향의 봄 또한 있을 것이다. 차이가 있다면 고향이 멀거나 가까운 정도의 차이일 뿐이다. 창원이 그들의 새로운 고향이 될 수는 없을까? 가능하다면 그것은 무엇을 통해서 가능할까? 도시의 문제와 그것에서 비롯되는 갈등의 근원적인 해결책은 멀리 있지 않다. 하지만 가장 어려운 문제일 것이다. 그것은 우리의 가장 아픈 부위의 상처일 경우가 많기 때문이다. 그것을 드러내고 함께 고민할 수 있다는 것은 바로 치유의 첫 단계가 될 것이다. 그래서 이 전시『복숭아꽃, 살구꽃』은 도시의 삶을 미화만 하지는 않는다. 전시에서는 소외된 사람들도 등장하며, 해외 입양아 문제, 노동의 문제, 지하 셋방의 이야기가 나오며, 잃어버린 옛 고향의 자연 등도 보일 것이다. 예술을 통해 우리가 살아가는 이 도시의 상처를 치유할 수 있다면 우리는 적어도 예술이 존재하는 이유 하나를 알게 될 것이다. ■

Peach flowers, Apricot Flowers ● The movement of a provincial government office and the construction of newly developed cities do not just mean the restructure of administrative regions caused by the expansion of a city. It also implies a change in our way of life, from the static culture of agricultural society to the nomadic culture of modern industrial society. Furthermore, it implies that Korea achieved a degree of industrial success, but at a great cost. As part of the cost, we modern urbanites can no longer define our identities. In contrast with the past, regardless of where we are born, where we were educated, or where we work, we are not allowed to stay in one place for a long time. We cannot stay in our home town even though we love it. In order to be perfect human beings we need to love everywhere in the same way as we love our home town. However, according to Hugo's classification we are not strong rather we are tender beginners. How dare we even dream of becoming perfect human beings who forget their own existence to love everywhere in the world? ● I hope to discover the new image of planned city of Changwon through the exhibition『Peach flowers, apricot flowers』. This issue will also apply to anywhere we live and to the people who live there. To begin with the conclusion, the answer to why we should create the new image for our living space is self-evident. We need to solve the conflict between the materialism that arises from radical urbanization and the problems of our cultural identities. The high speed limit written on highway signs, the rapid construction of new cities and industrialization at the amazing rate of 300 new factories per year do not guarantee a high measure of happiness in life. Despite materialistic improvement, we still miss our hometown. ● Numerous symbols are created and circulated in the space of city. In other words, many places in the city express themselves and force us to accept them. Unfortunately, it is our reality that we cannot be sure of which model of development is applicable and how to implement it as the process of urbanization probably does not follow a single continuum. Out city is facing new problems. Economic industrialization is only a limited solution as it cannot provide a solution to the problem of consumption structure for sociocultural aspects. Only the completion of true modernity can bring about the modern city. Only then, we can dream of a society where a new urban culture can actively lead social change and can guarantee individual citizens their own self-control. However, it is impossible to achieve modernity though institutional means. ● There are many workers from different areas in Changwon. We can often see some foreign workers walking in downtown Changwon on the weekends. They also have their hometown and remember the spring of their hometown. The only difference is the distance from their hometown. Can Changwon be their new hometown? If it is possible, what can make it possible? It is not impossible to find a solution. The solution is both scattered and intertwined with our most sensitive feelings. To expose these feelings and discuss them will be the very first step of the healing process. For this reason, the exhibition『Peach flowers, apricot flowers』does not attempt to glorify city life. In this exhibition, we can see people who are excluded from our standard, children who were adopted by non-Koreans, workers, people who live in cheap rental properties, and the landscapes of our lost hometown. If we try to heal the wounds of the city we live in, we are able to become more than 'tender beginners'. ■
