Round Trip

이번 전시는 스웨덴 우메오의 갤러리 베르크리헤텐의 7명의 작가들과 한국의 사진 작가 8명이 만나 처음으로 이루어 지는 한국과 스웨덴 현대 미술교류전이다. 스웨덴 및 북유럽의 작가들이 뉴욕의 화랑에서 주목을 받고 유럽의 중심에서 조명되고 있음에 비추어 보면 이번 전시도 늦은 감이 없지 않다. 북유럽 중에서도 스웨덴 인들은 앞서서 자기를 알리는 것, 나서는 것을 싫어한다. 이른바 '라곰' Lagom 이라고 이야기되는 이러한 이들의 미덕이 이들을 실제로 갖고 있는 가능성과 실력에 비해 뒤늦게 가치평가 되지 않았나 생각된다. 그러나 그들이 가진 작가들과 작업들은-어디에서 어떻게 조명 받는가에 의해- 터지기 만을 기다리는 만개를 앞둔 꽃봉오리와 같다.

스웨덴은 북유럽의 나라들 중 가장 영향력 있는 나라로서 우리나라의 입양아도 상당히 많은 나라이지만-실제로 이번에 함께 전시하는 두 명의 작가는 한국입양아를 친척으로 두고 있다.- 현재 현지에서 우리나라의 이해와 정보는 많이 부족한 실정이다. 이번 전시를 계기로 양국간의 문화 교류를 통하여 양국의 예술 발전은 물론이고, 스웨덴 현지에서 한국에 대한 이미지의 위상을 높일 수 있는 작은 기회가 되기 바란다.

베르크리헤텐 작가들과 한국의 사진가들은 서로 다른 작업환경과 문화권에서 살고 있지만 공통적으로 이들이 자라고 교육받은 자국의 정체성 및 고유의 시각은 넘치는 에너지를 작업을 통해 분출하고 있다. 이번 전시를 통하여 향후 각국의 새로운 예술 세대가 될 작가들로서 다양한 시각으로 자신의 정체성을 찾아 작업하는 공통적인 모습을 보여줄 수 있을 것이라고 기대한다. ■ 허숙영

This exhibition is the first exchange exhibition of 7 artists of Verkliheten(run by artists), Umea, Sweden and 8 photographers of Korea. Sweden has a peculiar trait called 'lagom', which can be translated as "in moderation," "in balance," "optimal," "suitable," and "average" in English. It means that the most Swedish people try to be modest all the time and try not to step outside of the line that they've drawn to be average. This explains why it took so long for Swedish artists to come into the spotlight in New York and Central Europe in spite of the large number of the artists and their high quality of work. But Swedish artists are like a volcano waiting to erupt, they are ready to explode.

Sweden is one of the most well-known Scandinavian countries in Korea and have adopted many Korean children, two of the Swedish artists participating in this exhibition actually have Korean adoptee as their relatives, but they still don't have enough information about Korea and Korean culture. I hope that this exhibition will help in understanding of the both countries and the culture.
