나는 L.A의 다운타운에 위치한 INMO Gallery 에서 특별한 전시 프로젝트를 진행하고자 한다. 그것은 누구나 내가 만든 로봇의 메뉴얼을 갤러리에 설치된 작업대에 앉아서 만들어볼 수 있도록 하는 것이다. 개개인의 성격과 심리에 따라 만들어진 로봇의 디테일은 차이가 있겠지만 완성된 로봇은 그의 것이고 판다면 더더욱 그의 것이다. 만들어진 로봇의 재료는 다운타운, 오래된 은행, 빈민가, 다양한 피부의 사람들에게서 나왔기 때문이다. 나에게 있어 절대적으로 손해인 손익, 배분, 저작권 따위는 이 작업에선 중요하지 않다. 만드는 방법만 전수시키면 되는 것이다. ● Rosslyn Hotel은 1923년에 지어졌으며 나는 이곳에서 3주간 머물며 작업하고 있다. Rosslyn Hotel 은 13개 층, 200여 개의 방이 있고 나는 1467호에 묶고 있다. 번호중 13은 미국인이 싫어하는 숫자 이므로 13층이 14층으로 표시되어 있었다. 호텔1층 로비에는 Billy's Coffee Shop이 있다. 지난 몇 년간 정지되어 있었던 그 공간을 다시 오픈한 것이 INMO 갤러리이다. 갤러리에는 그 당시 사용했었던 오래된 테이블 카운터가 아직도 남아있다. Rosslyn Hotel 근처에는Alexandria Hotel이 있다. Alexandria Hotel은 1906년에 지어졌으며 그 당시에 일급호텔이었다. 이곳에서 전해들은 바에 의하면 이 호텔에서 찰리 채플린이 잠깐 살았었다고 전한다. ● Alexandria Hotel 로비에는 100년은 넘어 보이는 오래된 피아노가 구석에 자리하고 있다. 나는 Alexandria Hotel의 피아노가 Rosslyn Hotel 의 Billy's Coffee Shop으로 이동한다면 어떨까 하는 생각이 들었다. 그리고 갤러리의 밖에 아직도 남아있는 Billy's Coffee Shop의 고장난 간판을 갤러리로 들여와 불을 밝힐 생각이다. 2007, 03, 15, Rosslyn Hotel ■ 이기일

I am currently doing a three-week artist residency at the Rosslyn Hotel built in 1923. Adjacent to the Rosslyn Hotel stands the prominent Alexandria Hotel built in 1906. I heard from a resident that Charlie Chaplin once lived there. A100-year-old piano that played music for the guests remains in the lobby of the Alexandria to this day. ● Rosslyn Hotels Billys Coffee Shop is now INMO Gallery. It was shut down by the Los Angeles Police Department many years ago. Its sign is still intact, but unlit. I first wanted to give everyone, especially the under-privileged, a chance to make my artworkthe cigarette-box robotso they wont have to sell drugs outside. What would happen if the piano at the Alexandria suddenly moved to gallery? What if we moved the Billys Coffee Shop sign inside to light it up?
