경계(境界)에서 노닐다

최근 한국의 미술계에서는 고전적이고 정신적이며 격조 높은 수묵화 전통의 끈을 찾아 새로이 부활시키고자 하는 논의가 대두되고 있다. 서은애는 옛 화법을 전수하여 전통의 틀 안에서 새로운 기법, 주제, 영감을 담아내는 한국의 신세대 화가 중의 한 사람이다. 그녀는 한국 전통화의 근간이 되는 엄격한 규범과 정형화된 붓놀림에 맞서 '동양적인 맥락에서 "현대"란 무엇인가'라는 질문에 천착하고, 그 과정에서 현대 동양 미술에 대한 기존의 서구적인 관점의 해석을 극복하고자 한다. ● 그럼에도 불구하고 다른 한 편으로 서은애는 고전적인 대가의 작품을 재현함을 통해 미술적 정진의 과정을 충실히 이어간다. 전통적인 그림의 모사(模寫)는 화가가 붓을 사용하는 법을 익히는 한 방편일 뿐만 아니라 옛 대가들의 독창적인 창작양식을 배우는 방편이기도 하다. 하지만 서은애는 단순히 대가의 작품을 모사하는 것만이 아니라 그 안에 자신의 이미지를 조화롭게 융화시킨다. 대개 전통적인 차림을 한 그녀는 거의 모든 그림에 등장하여 자신의 욕망, 꿈 그리고 유머를 드러내는 현대적인 내러티브를 창출한다.

서은애는 반복적으로 자신의 작품에 풍경을 그리거나 낙원을 묘사하곤 한다. 고대로부터 산은 중국과 한국에서 성스러운 의미를 가졌다. 산은 자연의 신과 멸하지 않는 영의 거처이자 무릉도원을 찾는 이가 올라야 하는 곳이었다. 서은애는 자신의 작품에 대해 이렇게 말한다. "나의 작품에서, 현재는 쉽게 과거와 대면한다. 나는 오랜 세월을 머금은 먼지 쌓인 그림 속으로 걸어 들어가 옛 화가가 그린 형상들 속에서 함께 노니는 것을 즐긴다. 내가 꿈꾸는 낙원은 어쩌면 옛 화가가 꿈꾸었던 이상적인 세계와 별반 다르지 않을지도 모른다... 그 세계는 유한한 인간이기에 마땅히 받아들이고 감내해야 하는 온갖 번민과 고뇌로부터는 너무도 먼 곳이리라... 나는 마치 그림 속에서 세속적인 속박에서 벗어나 시공간을 초월하는 완벽한 평화를 맛 볼 수도 있을 것처럼 느껴진다.

In recent years, Korea has seen the opening of a new dialogue amongst artistic circles in search of a rejuvenated relevance to the ancient, spiritual, and distinguished tradition of ink painting. Seo Eun-Ae is part of the young generation of classically-trained Korean painters who use new techniques, subjects, and inspiration within a traditional framework. She confronts the strict rules and codified brushstrokes that are the foundations of Korean traditional painting and explores the meaning of "contemporary" within the oriental context, away from the generally accepted Western interpretation of contemporary Asian art.

Nonetheless, Seo continues the traditional practice of artistic development through reworking the works of old masters. Copying is the way in which an artist learned to control a brush and create their unique style of painting. Seo, however, blends an image of herself into these old masters' paintings. Usually dressed in classical attire, she appears in every painting, creating a contemporary narrative to reveal her desires, dreams and humor.

Seo's works repeatedly feature landscapes and depictions of paradise. From the earliest times,mountains were sacred to China and Korea. They were the abode of the deities of nature and immortal spirits as well as a place to ascend to in search of Shangri-la. Seo writes: "In my works, the present effortlessly encounters the ancient. I step into a dusty painting of a time long past and enjoy being among the imagery of its painter. The paradise I dream of may not be so far removed from the dream world of the artist...yet so distant from the mortal anguish he endured...
