Change of Direction-동경·憧憬 Admiration ● 'Change of Direction - 동경 (憧憬)'은 동서양의 문화적인 차이에서 오는 '다름' 안에서 새로운 방향을 모색하기 위한 프로젝트다. 어떤 것을 간절히 원하여 그것만을 생각하는 동경의 의미와 같이 새로운 '바램' 에 관한 이야기를 유쾌한 퍼포먼스로 표현하였다. 이 작업은 일상에서 흔히 만날 수 있는 낙서화(graffiti)에서 시작되어 문화 이면의 세세한 다른 모습을 보려 한 것이다. ● 우연히 영국에서 발견하게 된 꼬리가 달린 여인의 pornography는 신선한 이야기를 가지고 다가왔다. 서양인의 눈에는 익숙하여 쉽게 지나칠 수 있는 것이 동양인인 나에게는 낯선 모습으로 보여진 것이다. 뿐만 아니라, 유희의 대상으로 비추어진 여인에서는 동서양 가치관의 유사성도 느낄 수 있었다. 낙서화(graffiti) 안에서 격하된 그 여인의 의미를 이 작업에서는 '존경'과 '숭배'의 대상으로 승화시킨 뒤 '동경(憧憬)'에 관한 이야기를 전개해 나아갔다. 한 남자가 유희로서 여인을 바라보는 것이 아니라, 꼬리 달린 그 여인을 닮고 싶어하는 것으로 이야기를 전환하였다. 그리고 여인을 닮아가는 한 남자의 퍼포먼스를 사진과 영상 설치 작업으로 표현하였다. ● 이 전시는 동서양의 문화 속에서 성에 관한 이미지를 새로운 시각으로 재구성한 프로젝트이다. 이 검고 꼬리 달린 상상의 여인은 사회, 문화 안에서의 나 자신 혹은 우리의 모습이기도 하다. 이 전시를 통해 문화와 젠더(gender)에 관한 깊은 생각과 더불어 이를 다양하게 이해하고 받아들일 수 있길 바란다. ■ 주하영

Change of Direction-Admiration 2006 ● The theme of 'Change of Direction-Admiration 2006' is explored by cross-cultural experience between the East and the West. This exhibition is to construct sexual difference in representation by defining in terms of bodily parts marked culturally, socially as feminine. This work, starting from the graffiti that can easily be met, is tried to see the other side of the culture. 'Admiration' is composed of hilarious performance liking which has a feeling of great and respect for a woman. With project-Admiration, I would like to show new desire for finding true direction. ● The pornography of a tailed woman which was found accidentally in England came to me with complexity. Although it could be overlooked to Westerner, it was unfamiliar to me as an Oriental. First of all, the black tailed woman was so strange. Secondly, the woman was designed to cause sexual excitement by showing her naked body. I would like to sublimate the meaning of imagery woman not for the object of excitement but for 'respect' and 'worship'. Then, I represented this project through performance of a man who wanted to resemble the sublimated woman. I also showed it by photography and video installation. ● In my project, I would like to show an ethics of sexual difference that what the status of the other's difference is, how it is generated and related to my identity and experience. I have tried to present my true courage and passion to convert ideas and overcome my surroundings, instead of unconditionally accepting the realities. In this exhibition, I believe that it is a good opportunity to understand different culture and gender. ■ Ha-Young Joo
