한국의 뉴 미디어 아티스트와 패션 디자이너의 작품들이 한 장소에서 펼쳐지는 본 행사의 주제는 '확장(Extensions)'이다. 이미 고전이 되어 버렸지만 미디어 이론에 관한 세계적 석학인 마샬 맥루한(Marshall McLuhan)이 언급한 이 개념은 자신의 한계와 본성으로부터 벗어나, 보다 심화된 감각과 지각을 추구하고 있는 인간에 관해 언급한 것이다. ● 인간의 끊임 없는 확장의 욕구는 인간 자신의 다양한 요소를 확장시켜 새로운 예술 형태를 창출해내고 있다. 물론 예술 자체가 본질적으로 인간 의식의 표현과 확장이라는 메커니즘의 결과물이기도 하지만, 뉴 미디어를 활용한 예술작품에서는 보다 감각적인 차원에서의 확장이 이루어진다. 이렇게 확장된 인간의 감각기관은 인식과 지각의 새로운 구조를 창출하고, 내면의 다양한 심상을 외부적으로 확장시키는 예술작품을 탄생시킨다. 그리고 이 예술작품은 인간 생활의 패턴을 변화시키게 된다. ● 새로운 매체를 활용하여 탄생한 예술작품은 기존의 전통적 형태의 예술작품과는 다른 인간의 인식 구조와 감각 영역을 표현하고 있다. 뉴 미디어 아트의 무한한 가능성은, 테크놀러지의 발전으로 인한 인간 감각능력의 무한한 진보와 맥을 같이하고 있기 때문에, 그 예술적 상상력과 가능성에 우리는 주목하게 된다. ● 한편 옷은 인간 신체의 1차적인 보호막으로서, 신체의 내부에 존재하는 장기와 외부의 대기 사이의 경계를 형성하고 있는 피부의 확장된 형태이다. 또한 인간의 물리적 구조의 확장임과 동시에 내부의 정체성과 존재성의 확장이기도 하다. 옷을 입는다는 것은 우리의 사회적 정체성을 표현하는 행위이다. 또한 그 옷의 존재는 그 옷을 입는 주체의 존재성을 표현하는 것이기도 하다. 이러한 존재성과 정체성의 외부적 확장의 형태인 옷이라는 것은 태생적으로 예술적인 가능성을 가지고 있었고, 오늘날까지 많은 패션 디자이너의 예술적 감각의 확장의 도구가 되어 온 것이다. ● 이러한 맥락에서 이 전시를 구성하는 뉴 미디어 아트와 패션 디자인을 일관하는 인간의 감각적 '확장' 욕구를 발견할 수 있다. 인간의 이러한 확장 욕구로 말미암아 서로 다른 형태의 작품들이 나름대로 창조적인 상상력을 현현시킬 수 있는 예술로서의 존재를 부여받게 되는 것이다. 이 전시에서 선보이는 작품들은 예술가의 개인적 진술의 차원에서 확장되어 관객과의 소통을 시도할 것이다. 그리고 관객은 그러한 확장의 파장과 상호교류하며 새로운 형태의 교감을 경험할 것이고, 그러한 경험들은 다시 새로운 상상력으로 확장될 것이다. ■ 고원석 [email protected]

Extensions offers a unique vision of Marshall McLuhan's "technological simulation of consciousness" through eastern eyes. Curated by Won Seok Koh and sponsored by The Korean Culture and Arts Foundation, Extensions is a multimedia group exhibition of contemporary Korean artists attempting to manifest those sensory 'extensions' that technology brings about. The result is a concord of sensationally sybaritic images and installations - a visualization of Korean extension as a mass culture into the contemporary global community.
