Mode

모드(Mode)란, 사전적 의미로 '양식, 방법, 또는 특정한 작업을 할 수 있는 어떤 상태'를 의미한다. 그리고, 좀 더 광범위하게는 생활방식이나 유행을 말하기도 한다. ● 나의 작업은 주위에서 일어나는 사건들을 '모드화' 시키는 것이다. 그 이유는, 일정한 거리감각을 유지하는 나의 대응방식을 통해, 서로 똑 같을 수 없는 사건들을 정리하고, 결국엔 그 사건들의 공식, 즉, 모듈(Module)을 도출해서 나의 활동영역을 말하고자 하기 때문이다.

나의 '모드화'는 원과 선으로 환원된 형식을 띄는데, 이는 마치 지도와 설계도에서 볼 수 있는 기호와 유사성을 가진다. 여기서 원은 하나의 상황을 의미하며, 그 원은 인간과 관계 될 수도 있고, 사물과 관계 될 수도 있으며, 하나의 현상일 수도 있다. ● 원을 선택한 이유는, 원 그 자체는 완전한 존재같이 보이지만, 그 완벽한 원들이 모였을 때 빈 공간이 생길 수밖에 없는 불완전함이, 바로 내가 얘기하고자 하는 사건의 시작을 의미하기 때문이다. ● 선은, 그 원들 간의 여러 가지 관계를 파악하려고 하는 내 의지의 메타포이다. ■ 이주형

Mode, in dictionary terms, means 'a particular form, manner, way, or method of doing or acting, or a given condition of functioning.' In a broader sense, it also refers to the current or customary fashion or style. ● My work is to 'modize' the events happening around me. It is to explain my boundary of action by pulling those events together that cannot possibly be identical with one another through my constant way of corresponding to them. It is a way that maintains steady sense of distance, thereby eventually bringing forth a formula of those events, that is, a module. ● My 'modization' involves a form that is resolved into circles and lines, bearing resemblance to such signs appearing on maps or blueprints. Here, a circle means a single situation, and that circle could be related with a person, or a thing, or it could be just a certain phenomenon. ● I have chosen circles because although a circle itself may seem like a complete being in its own form, when those complete circles are joined together, however, empty spaces are formed inevitably. That very incompleteness marks the beginning of an event that I stand to speak of. ● Line, is the metaphor of my will that strives to grasp the various relationships among those circles. ■ Rhee Joo Hyung
