평행/Parallel pt.1

호주와 한국을 오가는 이번 기획전시는 한가지의 공통된 『Parallel』이란 이슈를 안고 양국의 작가들이 공동 혹은 개인의 작품을 전시합니다. 『평행선 상에서』 전시는 양국의 작가가 한번의 만남도 없었던 점에서 출발합니다. 서로 공통된 'art'를 대하지만 이들은 실제로 어떤 공통의 목적점을 향하지는 않습니다. 작가들은 각국의 미술환경의 영향만을 받은 채 지형적, 문화적인 각국의 차이이자 동시에 작가들의 작품을 구분 짓는 특징들을 표면적으로 드러내게 됩니다. ● 'the way we do things'라는 전시 project의 주된 요소가 갤러리의 한 공통 공간 안에 어우러저 실제의 'parallel' 로서 작용합니다. 한국 내의 호주 현대미술에 대한 관심이 여지껏 적었다는 측면, 특히 현재 활동중인 젊은작가들의 작품성향과 호주 내에서도 역시 한국 현대미술이 그렇기에 이번에 기획된 전시는 양국의 문화적 교류측면에서도 의의가 있으리라고 생각합니다. ● 이번 기획의 한국 전시는 2003년 7월 23일부터 8월 9일까지 한전프라자 갤러리에서 『Parallel pt.2』展이라는 제목으로 열립니다. ■ 강상빈

『Parallel』 is an international exchange project involving emerging visual artists from Australia and South Korea. As the title suggests, 『Parallel』 embraces notions of non-convergent similarity, offering an open-ended framework for the juxtaposition of existing methodology and conceptual concerns. The project acknowledges each participants pursuit of a career in the visual arts, as a qualifying point of engagement. To this end, 『Parallel』 eschews a mode of cultural exchange that could be construed as hegemonic. Rather, its goal is to compress the space, both geographic and cultural, that separates artistic practice and to emphasize the output of such practice, as the active conceptual element of the project. ● 『Parallel pt.2』 will be exhibited in Seoul, South Korea at Korea Electric Power Plaza Gallery from 23 July to 9 August 2003. ● The artists involved in Parallel would like to acknowledge the generous support of Arts Victoria through the International Cultural Exchange Fund, Han Jeon Gallery and West Space. ■ Simon Horsburgh
